Good guest and show. Shame Canadian wines are so hard to find…especially in the UK

CRAZY that you are trying okanagan wines!!! They also have a loch-ness monster type serpent in their lake called Ogo Pogo! My dad lives in Kelowna (Heart of Okanagan) and I’ve been visiting there for 15 years… Everything he said was right… it’s absolutely GORGEOUS there…

Wines I’ve found are pretty good… Have been on a wine tour there… They have this Pyramid wine that I remember being pretty good!

    LOVE this episode!

    Q.O.T.D. SOON!

  • QOTD: I would like to check B.C. out when the Olympics are on.

Nice to see some love for our Canuck wines, and my personable pal Rhys representing. Good on ya GV, eh?

  • Great episode! I love to see newer areas coming up. The flavor profiles of the wines may not be traditional, but that can be a great thing.

I’d love to try that Riesling!

QOTD: ASAP but I really can’t say when. Way over here in Upstate NY you know?

  • Thanks for finally covering Okanagan wines! 🙂 There are so many great wineries, big and small – you need to come up and visit Gary (but in the summer when it is hot).
I’m on the coast, but get out to the Okanagan a few times a year.

QOTD: I’m visiting the Okanagan in a month for a snowboard trip, but will be returning May or June for more winery touring.

Would have been fun to have Hendryk sitting on your left for another taste opinion. He’d have fallen off his chair at the description of the riesling ? apples and mineral!

I wish Rhys had brought the J-T Grand Reserve Merlot or the Mission Hill Reserve rather than the Shiraz.

Thanks for the hospitality to BC wines, Gary, and kudos to Rhys for representing.

QOTD: That’d be a real case of “coals to Newcastle”. I’ve been here for 20 years, and as the sign out on the highway says, “I’ve found the sweet life!”

Canadian wines are on the whole way TOO expensive, lacking in varietal definition and extremely over hyped by the local population. HOWEVER, the pick of the bunch for me is “The legacy” by Poplar grove ( They also make very good cheese). Penticton and the NARAMATA Bench bench where these wines come from is also well worth a visit. Kettle Valley winery is also worth a visit.

Great show and guest. Bring on the Canadian wines. Do some shows from BC when you go. It’s a beautiful part of the world.

QOTD: live in BC already (Vancouver). Wife grew up in the Okanagan. Try to get up there at least every other year. What’s great about the Okanagan is that it like Napa (at least in the summer) but, what with the lakes, it is much more fun for the kids to visit. I.e. you can go to the wineries while the kids are swimming and/or waterskiing within eyesight. The kids will not be saying “can we leave already,” instead they will “what do you mean we have to leave – we’ve only just started to have fun.”

In the winter, it’s like Tahoe – GREAT skiing.

Love the free shipping 11am sale, very disappointed that at 3:38 I was told one wine was sold out and I would need to choose 3 options, remove it, substitute it or make another choice, and then at 3:39 sent another email saying it was removed without my getting a choice and it shipped. whazzup? poor, Gary. Find the director of operations and see what’s up?
    Oh, this is WineLibraryTV, sorry.

Great show, gotta try Canadian wines this summer when touring up there. thanks.

Solid Show. Nice Guest, and an interesting area. I’m curious to learn more about BC wines. I didn’t realize the area would be ideal for vineyards, as it seems like their climate wouldn’t have enough sun influx, but now I realized Okanagan is one the leeward side of the mountains!

QOTD: The next time I come skiing (?)…

  • Haven’t had any Okanagan wines yet but looking forward to it.

QOTD: I will visit during the Olympics, that would rock.

Sidenote, I’ve heard you mention Mexico two times now and if you are truly interesed in making a show then I urge you to gather up some wines from Rivero González, Bodegas De Santo Tomás, Malagón, Chateau Camou, Bibayoff, Torres Alegre, Monte Xanic, Flor De piedra and Flor de Guadalupe, supposedly the best vineyards here and Casa Madero which is right in the middle of the first ever vineyard in America, Valle De Parras.

    Good Show.

  • QOTD: Haven’t been to Canada in 20 plus years – but LOVED BC. Summer trips only.

After several too sweet bottles of liquid-candy like Reisling I had sworn off the stuff – I’m reconsidering.

    Love this episode,

Since I’m from NB Canada, I will be able to find some of these wines & will be comparing my palate with your analysis…

Gary, did you had a chance to taste the Ossoyous-Larose? It’s our Canadian Bordeau!!!

QOTD : Did the Niagara winery tour last year…Nova Scotia the year before, so BC is next!!!

    Meh

QOTD: The only part of the wanna be frenchies that I want to venture into is Vancouver.

PS: Talk is cheap and if Ryan hasn’t realized it yet, he has a major locker room issue with the QB situation and the defense is nowhere near as talented. He might want to tone it down abit before he gives the rest of the East more bulletin board material.

  • I’m learning…age of the vines affect the taste…location of the vineyard affects the price. BC reminds me of Long Island a little bit, in that respect. Your guest was super smooth.

QOTD: I go to Canada for the F1 Grand Prix, and I went to Banff on a company trip, but I truthfully don’t see myself getting to BC any time soon.

Hah! I live there! So maybe I’ll walk outside later this evening and you’ll have your answer for you.

BC has some fabulous wines to offer. It varies HUGELY by vintage. Our weather is SO unpredictable that it’s impossible to replicate the same batch over and over and over. Especially after a really hot summer you’ll find the wine you’re looking for. The 2008 vintage will be delicious.

One thing to note is that the wines you’re looking at are significantly cheaper if you get them directly from the vinyard (which is how we do it up here in BC). If the opportunity comes around, make sure you order by the case directly from the vinyard. Skip those pesky middlemen (uh oh, I’m sure that’ll be bad for business for Gary!).

I love it, your like “new format” 10 minutes 1 bottle. 33 minutes and a guest! woot woot!

So Gary, in theory; if someone came down with their, lets say, 200 cases of wine, and you liked it, would you buy it and sell it at Wine Library?

Yo that’s messed up Canada! Imma put fake labels on my wines for Canadians going back over the border.

IDAHO!?!??!?!?!?!? Gary, come on, Get on board man, we need you. “Perfect viticultural region … A very desirable place to live … Rich people driving up land prices” sound familiar? Gary, your BLATANT NEGLECT of the Hudson Valley is STUNNING and hurtful. Blarg!

The point is, if its just as good as any other Chard, then why not buy local?

    AH hAHA. CANADIAN bones.

    WOOOOWHOOO 85/14 …%!?!??!

HAA that guy had not clue when you said 85!

  • Cool guest Homey. I love Canda. Go on weeekend trips often as you know. Can’t bring da vino into Canada… 🙁

Thanks for that info on my last trip there. Saved me a lot of grief at Customs… Can you imagine if I didn’t ask you first…lol

I just got a bottle of wine sent to me from Canada around Christmas time. Guess I’ll have to drink it now.
