Good introduction to a new area – shame the wines sucked

Big ups to the Loire Valley whites. American white producers take note, Pouilly Fume is how Sauv Blanc is done (lets don’t even get into Burgundian Pouilly Fuisse, which is how Chard’s should be made).

Thanks for hitting the this appellation and varietal Gary.

  • Had an 97 Phelps Insignia and loved it. I was in Napa last year and visited Phelps. We were really looking forward to it. I’m not sure why but I was underwhelmed with all the wines I tasted, especially the Insigina (04 or 05, don’t remember which). Maybe it was just that my expectations were so high but still, I loved the 97.

QOTD: 1st week of January, 2009. Heitz Cellar

We were in Napa, mainly hitting the Stags Leap district and several other wineries on the Silverado Trail. However we did jump over onto Hwy 29 of course to hit a few standards and had an hour or so to kill. In order to help my friends visiting from Denmark to appreciate some of the older culture of the region we went into Heitz Cellar.

We should have just stood at the door front on our way out chanting “OH-VER RAY-TED”. What happened to this one time prestigious winery? Sheesh. There’s 45 minutes of my life I won’t get back.

Loire whites and french whites in general are where it is at. I can’t believe you would do a pouilly fume tasting with out a “DIDIER” being tasted, his sav is the best I have ever had and worth the big price tag IMO.

QOTD: Last big let down was a quick tour of some local wineries. But then again Va wineries entire lineups 90% of the time disappoint except for Linden and Barboursville

    Gary V,

Nice ep – again something a bit different. It’s good to see your doing other Sauv Blancs from around the world, not just NZ ones, could you do some chilean Sauv Blancs in the Future????

QOTD – The wine that pissed me off the most was a bottle of Leeuwin Estate Art Series 2006 Riesling…The acid content was unbearable…it was like drinking straight lemon juice…disappointed considering the Art Series is a
    premium range of wines.

Also just a note to all the Vayniacs out there – Southern Australia was devistated by massive wild fires last Saturday…I was fortunate that I live about 80 miles away from the devistation….Unfortunately the wildfires also wiped out most wineries and vineyards in a huge area…so 2009 Australian wines may be sort-after when they become available of the next few years..

    Many thanks SAMMMY S

qotd: last week at a Sonoma valley long time wine maker with lots of 92-95 Parker ratings (can’t name), but all the wines were above 15% alc. Even the Pinot Blanc was 15.5! Completely scorched my palate.

It’s hard to say. I vaguely remember an irritating experience with a tasting at some vineyard in the Willamette Valley. I promptly forgot what it was, what it was called, only that it was annoying. Or maybe it was the people…

  • Nice new angle, quick, succinct show.. Too bad all 3 bottles showed below average.

QOTD: Good thing I didn’t have to pay for it, but it was a bottle of red Burgundy at a tasting.. It was presented to me as a 115 dollar bottle.. And it tasted like… nothing… I’m not talking about finesse, subtlety, or any of that. I’m talking NOTHING. Just a mouthful of dust and cottonmouth.

  • NY Pete

stop kissing up SS … 😆

Not a fan of Sauv Blanc by itself, so you pretty much had my usual reaction when I’m not pairing it immediately with food
QoTD — well, I was irritated by the previous two wines I opened this week, but tonight’s more than made up for them!

QOTD …had to go to cellartracker to find the last time a wine pissed me off … 8/28/2008 …it was a 2004 Hartig Family Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • QoTD: Funny you should ask. I had a 2004 Banfi Chianti Classico that PISSED me off last night… Very disappointing effort, almost ruined my day, except for the fact the Pens beat the Sharks last night… GO PENS!!!

I snatched up an Oscar secret pack.. Seems most of the wine I buy are in “packs” or your wine of the month clubs. Is that considered “Blind Buying”? 🙂

Btw, what’s up with the wanna-be Soprano’s accent, dropping the end of italian words? It’s proscuitt-O, calamar-I! Do you drink chiant or prossec?
Just cuz you had a mullet in 8th grade doesn’t mean you have to talk so dirty-Jersey 😉

  • QOTD: A “series” of wine that continue to piss me off are restaurant house wines that are God Awful! I wish they would put at least some thought into a good house wine because they can be found.

“and talks about Brett Favre leaving” No you didn’t!! I’m curious as to your feelings about #4’s call!!

I like the new view a lot, but you need to bring the white board!

QOTD: Every time I’ve bought a wine that’s been on clearance has been CRAP. I know that’s probably a warning sign in & of itself, but I wish I could find a hidden home run!

  • I like Loire whites almost as much as I like Loire reds.

That said, the last really disappointing wine to cross my path was a Sancerre–Lucien Crochet Le Chene ’05. Texturally interesting, but above and beyond that kind of meh.

It didn’t suck or anything, it just fell short of greatness.
