Good introduction to a new area – shame the wines sucked

  • … is half the battle.

QOTD: I had some Napa Valley Syrah last weekend, and I was “pissed off” that I only had one bottle in the house.

Doc P – Gewurztraminer is great pairing for spicy Indian food.

QOTD: last wine i drank: 2005 cairanne (CdR villages): le pavillon des courtisanes

i thought an 05 GSM blend would be as can’t miss as wines come (for me). but i was wrong. uninteresting and lacking any redeeming characteristics…

Loved the new set Gary, its nice to change things up.

QOTD: I got really pissed off at a bottle of Concannon Chardonnay that I picked up 2 weeks ago…really bad effort ๐Ÿ™

  • Hey Gary thanks so much for the shout out, and it is always a celebration. I’m lucky to have had the last 13 years, plus every anniversary now means I got got to watch a ton more WLTV! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was just talk to someone yesterday about wondering when the next secret pack is coming… DAE JA VOO!

Interesting new camera angle and set. Change is good. We also get to see who walks in on you during recordings (Who was that hot blonde by the way?)

QOTD: The only wine I’ve had from Brazil called Brazilio (or somethin’ like that)was a disappointment, as well as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2003 by Carpineto that I had this week-end was quite thin and uninteresting. I expected a lot from the Carpineto…

    Cool show, love y’all!

Regardless of these three wines, Pouilly Fume is a MAJOR favorite of mine and can do serious damage, outperforming many Sancerre at similar price points. I carry one by the glass at my restaurant and it is an ’07, and is on par with the ’06 from the same producer. Weird show, but worth the attention to this region!

QOTD: I had a VERY disappointing Burgundy tasting a while back- older, dead vintages and completely underwhelming (for the pricepoint) younger reds from two really crappy producers. I LOVE Burgundy, but these did NOT cut it, and were WAY over- priced. THAT pisses me off!

QOTD: 2003 Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva. Maybe just a bad bottle (wasn’t corked), but just had a very unpleasant nose (bad funky, not good funky) and was disjointed. Still have another couple of bottles to go through, so we’ll see.

Thank you so much for the shout out GV!!!!!!!

QOTD: The 2005 BV Merlot I had a few nights ago was just terrible. I was looking for something on the cheaper end coming from a respected winery (I love BV’s Cab Sav’s and Pinot Noir’s) and was in a merlot mood. I was deeply disappointed.

over everytime I open up a over extracted over oaked industrial tasting wine that some critic says is great.

I have to say the Fontannafreda Barbera was like that for me.. I thought… is this from Spain, Australia, Italy ? I could not tell it was Barbera.. It was not over oaked..but it tasted over -extracted and generic.. good flavor but not BARBERA from a real place.. Just textbook modern winemaking ..

    Also,… Quincy… pronounced Can-See,

  • Too bad these Poo-Yee Foo-Mays did not fare well. I must say it went well with your backdrop. Being the OCD Type A, I don’t like disorder and it bothered me watching you with all that “stuff” behind you especially that ragged arm puppet #12. You must move it out of the camera field of view. ๐Ÿ™‚

QOTD: A local wine shop raved about this wine and WS gave it 92 pts. I was unimpressed and almost as ticked as you were tonight.

BIBI GRAETZ GRILLI DEL TESTAMATTA 2006, ITALY

    Cheers!

P.S. Last week you asked people to chime in on facebook what show you should do this past Monday. Have I missed it?

I feel your pain. As much as I love the Loire Valley I’ve never had much
luck with Pouilly Fumes. Gimme a Sancerre or Quincy.

I get pissed with a older high end bottle that I pick up and it turns out
flawed. Had a ’96 Remoissenet red burg that ended up having cork seepage
and ruined my night (not to mention my meal ๐Ÿ™ )

QOTD: I bought some MN whites after being impressed in the tasting room. Three of the six I bought were oxidized, and the other three were nothing like the tasting room. That was when I first really started getting into wine, so they may have had a different vintage out on the floor and I didn’t notice. I didn’t drive the hour and a half back to the winery to have them replace the bottles.

  • I like the new setting, although many will find it distracting with all the football memorabilia, but I like that you mix it up from time to time.

QOTD: I’ve never had Pouilly Fumรฉ, i’ve had puilly fuissรฉ. Will look for it anyway, maybe 2005?

False advertising!!! I didn’t hear any GV comments about Brett Favre (not that I GAS about his retirement).

Like the new setting. It’s more interesting, looks a bit more professional.

QOTD: When I bought a 1995 Blain-Gagnard Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru and it was one of the best wines I’ve ever had, then I bought 4 more from the same collection and they were all ruined.

    good show.

qotd: virtually every Aussie wine I drink, which is rarely, pisses me off. They tend to suck.

  • Great to see some Pouilly Fumes featured! I’ve always liked those a lot, but rarely hear them talked about or featured much as a rule. I haven’t had too many Fumes recently, so I don’t think I’ve tried any of the 2007’s you’re tasting in this episode, but I’ll have to give them a try myself and see if they suit my palette. I actually tend to like pretty strong whites with bold vegetable notes. They go really well with some of the heavily herbed chicken dishes I like to make, as well as with a nice, garlicky seafood pesto pizza. Like you always say, it’s all about trying things for ourselves and deciding what suits our own tastes.

Those who aren’t as familiar with the Pouilly Fume varietal are definitely in for a treat if they want to start exploring it a little more. I find that on the whole, they’re very interesting and complex, and they pair so well with rich or savory seafood and poultry dishes. Doing some homework on them, as well as exploring the idea of wine clubs that focus on Pouilly Fumes and other similar wines, are great ways to get to know them and pinpoint some favorite vintages and pairings. I find that following wine club reviews are a great way to stay on top of what’s new or what’s causing a buzz in that arena. We’re always bringing you the best over at wineclubguide.com.

    hi gary,

that s so funny, i went out with friends tonight and ordered a poully fume (but they had no more), got a sancerre instead

I have to say Poully fume is something special for sauvignon blanc fans, you re right, it s very similar to NZ sauvignon blanc, but wth a little more lemon grass/kiwi as opposed to yellow grapefruit/lemon peel.

QOTD: Autralian Merlot… I was expecting something more, I didn t finish the glass (which is not like me)and grumped about it on te way home. It just confirmed my opinion that Australia is not where my palate is right now: I was pissed off and mentally rated it 72 points (ie: never have it again, especially at ยฃ5 or $7.50 a glass.)

Hey Gary, Awesome idea for the set, but i think that you should change it up more often. Like …. maybe do an episode in you cellar!! that would be epic!

QOTD: I had a Chardonnay from a local producer the other day ( i had hopes for it because this place hasn’t got the best rep. and i was hoping to get a better impression than ive heard) Anyway, the oak was integrated nice, but the alcohol was off the charts and completely destroyed its balance AHHHHHHHHH!! if you had an alcohol monster, well mine just pooped on yours, that’s how bad it was. needless to say, it was a notch on my belt i coulda done without.
