Great episode, but it’s never fun watching Gary’s mood drop so hard after wines that fail to bring it (for him). Gary, I also have noticed lately that you are one of those east-coasters that drop the last part off of Italian food words…it’s calamarI and proscuiTO…;)lol- Just joshin’ ya;)
QOTD: I picked up my first Chablis 1er cru recently, a 2000 Vaillon, and when I popped it, it was like sherry in all aspects! Very, Very dissapointing.
    Thanks for the show!!

This is my first post and I have to admit that I have been one of the hated lurkers for much too long now. My apologies! I love the show and I really appreciate what Gary V is doing out there!

QOTD: Recently I had the recent Paul Zinck Pinot Noir and I was legitimately pissed off. It tasted like diluted grape juice (not even…grape drink!). I like the Gewurz from the Zinck label and I was excited for the PN. I was so grouchy that I drove all the way back to the wine store for a different bottle and in doing so I let my dinner get cold. It was a tough night.

    Keep up the show!

    Peace

  • I like this angle better…changing it up is a good thing, just like trying new wines!

  • QOTD: I can’t remember the name now (probably blocking it mentally) but we tried a rose this past summer after years of not having rose and it was really terrible.

    ouchy- rough batch.

QOTD: The wine that I currently have the misfortune of having in front of me. Woodbridge Pinot Noir. Yuck! Freaking pissing me off.

  • I was watching Survivor and your show at the same time, but I don’t remember hearing any comments on the retirement of the last quarterback for the NEW YORK JETS! The living legend Brett Favre. What’s up with that??? When was this episode recorded?

QOTD: I was recently pissed off by the 2007 Salena Estate Ink Series Chard. It tasted like white grape juice sipped through a garden hose in the middle of August in Arizona.

Don’t waste your breath on Favre; the Jet’s just wasted a whole year for development of a future QB. Is the Pouilly Fume anything like that Fussy Pussy wine from France?
    Smell it first! TR

Ummm…I didn’t hear a single word about Favre. Why did it mention him in the show description?

QOTD: can I give a category of time? When someone recommends a wine they think is so good when actually it is so fat and flabby. This happens too often with most recent happening last weekend-can’t remember the name as I quickly went to another bottle(happy with old vine marietta).

    Like you wall stuff.

Pillar Box Reserve pissed me off. I was expecting a lot more from this wine at the price point.

    QOTD:
I had a Tuscan wine I purchased at WL it was inexpensive, $10 but I was underwhelmed. To be honest I brought it to a family gathering looking for their opinion, everyone enjoyed it, bashed me for being toooo critical, the dogs, in fact they offered to buy the remainder of the case…go figure.

QOTD: the last wine that pissed me off was called Caliterra. cant remeber what type of grape it was, but it was awful, it was pure oakey wood. I mean i might aswell have eaten some bark off a tree it was that oakey, absolutely awful. i thought i was actually going to be sick, the worst wine ive ever tasted.

GV: whatever u do, do not try this wine called Caliterra, as u dont like the oak monster either, i dont want to have 2 see you suffer:P

QOTD – I just had 2 Bourgueil back to back that I didn’t like. One of them tested like peanut butter, weird … It was a huge emotional let down because Bourgueil was my go to wine in Paris restaurants when I was a students. I am talking 25 years ago, back then Bourgueil was dirt cheap. On the flip side, I followed this with a delicious Saumur Champigny: the Loire valley still rules!

Good show, even though the wines disappointed. We can all learn from the failures as well as the successes. I have learned a lot about wines from you, Gary, and I hope you continue to do these episodes for a very long time to come.

QOTD: Several years ago, I took a bottle of Dom P to toast a very special wedding anniversary, and it tasted like a $15 dollar sparkler. I like some $15 sparklers, and I could have had 8 bottles of ’em for the price of the Dom. Live and learn.

Question: How can a novice like me tell if a bottle of wine has gone bad, versus it just being a bad wine? Sometimes, a wine tastes somewhat astringent, medicinal, or “chemical.” When that happens, I don’t know if I got a bad bottle or a bad wine. Can you help?

QOTD: Opus One tasting back in ’02. The gal was rude and unkind and the wine was adequate at best. I had been so looking forward to that tasting, and I was hugely disappointed. I’m in Napa at least once a year, often twice, and I haven’t been back (or purchased a bottle) since. I had a lovely tasting at Caymus last week, but didn’t stop at Opus!

How do you feel about Favre? I’m very sad. I’m going to miss him a lot on Sundays. 🙁

QOTD: I took several friends up to Amador Valley in California. At our first place we taste 5 wines, very, very small pours. After we were talking about a few of the wines and the lady says ;so what are you gonna buy?”. I said we are talking about the wines and which and if we like them. She says “So you guys aren’t really wine people, then?”….I’m thinking WTF!! I own a wine business you idiot! Just left, never went back and will never go back to that winery! Will always tell my friends not to go when asked.

When I saw the show headline today I quietly snirred while watching with my significant other. Not a huge fan of Pouilly Fumes…not really at all. After we watched, I started laughing because you looked like me prior to the start.

QOTD: Everything I bought from Trader Joe’s on Tuesday. The Red Diamond, Red Truck, and something else I forget the name of now were ALL awful. This middle part of the week has been rough so far. I’m drinking a Huntinton Zin right now for God’s sake because I’m scared to break anything else new out with the streak I’m on.

PS I’m a GM of a french restaurant in Naperville outside Chicago. My Glunz distributor came in today, (Joe Bonk), says he knows you and you remembered him the last time yall ran into each other. Decent guy….bought some Von Strassen from him today.

Hey Gary…like the new setting…and seeing your memorabillia in the background. Even though you were disappointed with the show, it’s still informational…note to self, 2007 Pouilly Fume questionable.

QOTD: I had a Shiraz from Chile that I LOVED. Purchased their Cab…it was nothing…no flavor at all. Very dissappointed.

Hugs and kisses from Kentucky…Happy Valentines Day Eve!

QOTD: Biggest let down was a 1982 Chateau Pontet-Canet Bordeaux, eagerly bought in a Paris wineshop and schlepped back to my hometown, of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It tasted like balsamic vinegar. Probably my fault for flying with delicate and aged bordeauxs, or maybe it was already vinegar before flying… I’ll never know.
