I love this episode. The guest totally steals the show and his interaction with Gary is priceless

Well, this one started out with some promise but the mid palate was hollow and overall pretty thin.

Perhaps he is a better writer than a guest.

QOTD – anything that gets me through faster is a plus.

QOTD: If it was all hot women working the booths I would prefer that kinda interaction. If not the other is fine.

Don’t judge a guest on just one apperance. Alot of people might not like WLTV if they judged Gary just by ONE episode!!!

Great show. Don’t know what all the complaining is about. I thought it was funny. Maybe Robert was a bit timid next to Gary, but then I mean come on, who wouldn’t be? The QOTD: I love quick check-in, so I disagree with Robert there, no need to sit around having face time with some perspiring and stressed out airline people. So, the crusade against technology only goes so far. Yes, we need less of it in wine, and more back to nature. But, let’s not be luddites here. I say bring Robert back for his next book. Get him drunk first, but stay focused on terroir, and not makeup and breast-jobs…. I mean, come on, you guys, don’t be so vapid.

Yo, GV…this guy, I know he’s GOT to have some wine experience and qualities, BUT I hope he’s better at writing than he is at working with people like you on camera. You are a tough host…NO ONE can match your vigor and expertise, no one. But, hee seemed to have to answer each of your questions by repeating your question and a bit of mulling around….Hmmmm. not what this show deserves. I envy his ability to move to France and work the good life there. He has to know more than he was able to tell us.
Harsh, I know. Always good to take in the best show on the INTERNET!! Al Gore invented it – the internet – you know….KUTGW!!

Robert Camuto must use the name jean-luc to give such a glowing review of this episode.

This is not to say that his book is not well written or that it does not have substance… he simply was a HORRIBLE guest on the show. He claims to be a fan of the show but appears to know little about it. You don’t have to be a fan to be a guest, but don’t pretend you are. Most people see through BS very easily.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. 6hr flight, 3hr time diff, and lots of time in a car. My brain totally shuts down when jet lag hits. He probably should have thought about that before taking on the Vayner-nation. I can tell he wasn’t an avid watcher of the show though. This will be a book I take for a test drive at Barnes and Noble with a nice cup of mocha before I decide to buy.

So that is at least the fifth mention of tea from you Gary (twitter and otherwise). When are you going to bring the leafy green thunder? I would have to say tea is pretty interesting to me. It took a long damn time to begin to even remotely train my palette for bitter watery tastes after growing up with Kool-Aid, Oreos, and two spoonfuls of sugar on my already sugarfied cereal.

QOTD: I never have to go to them because I get e-tickets and I only have a carry on plus a laptop, even for a two week trip. Laundry can be done pretty much anywhere you go.

  • Hi All,
This is my first time comment. I was only introduced to Gary and his program about 2 months ago and now never miss it.
I feel I must say though even though I didn’t enjoy Robert either, we have to remember that he’s a writer and not a wine critic. How much he actually knows about wine we’ll never really know. What I do know that anybody who is trying to market something for themselves(like his book), if you a chance at a forum like the “Thunder Show”, you would have to jump at it.
You can’t really blame him for that! He probably should stick to writing though.
Jean-Luc, please kep your personal comments to yourself friend, it’s not helpful to anyone!

  • Mott–good recovery, and I’ve noticed the sound levels substantially lower on these episodes…. Dude, the second you’re on WLTV if you watch them with some moderate regularity, YOU KNOW that you’re going to be the one to ask the QOTD, don’t be a poster.

Based off of this episode I would have asked something like “What is the vintage of the oldest wine in your collection?” For what it’s worth, my oldest is 1996 (there I answered my own QOTD)

Just embrace technology, it’s not going away and rejecting it will not make it easier, who wants to wait in a queue when you can go up to one of 100 kiosks and get it almost instantly?

i’m getting his book because the reviews rock, regardless. interesting subject matter. true, show could have been stronger. but, i don’t see any reason for all the hating on the guy. who cares if he was a newbie to gary’s bizarre world, and didn’t know about QOTD. he seemed genuine to me, and he had that Jets beret made for him. it’s a cool gesture regardless. and he had some laughs. let him get some more media time and have him back on. Gary liked him, that was pretty clear. so what do we know, anyhow?

  • Thanks guys

    An interesting show.

QOTD: nice question, I personally hate those things with a passion. Surely you should be entitled to speak to a real person, they don’t even really make it that much quicker as you still have to line-up to get rid of your bags,

    Cheers

  • Robin C

QOTD: They’re fine. You have to be remember which credit card you used to make the flight reservations, because if you have a different credit card with you, you have to do something else on the screen. Anyway, it can be stressful. But usually someone comes to help.
    I thought Robert was charming.
Is the whole make-up conversation annoying to all women?

  • AaronB

QOTD: They’re great! They’re quick and easy, giving me more time to wade through the stupid security line. It really sucks, though, when you get stuck behind some technophobe who can’t seem to figure out the simple instructions and takes forever.

Im sure Glen’s used a kiosk to check-in on one of those trips…

Great show. Thanks Gary. Bring Robert in again. He’s funny and so cute. Which is why all the guy’s are jealous. Living in France with a French wife, as a travel writer. Talk about a sexy life. Who cares if he didn’t have all the mojo working after a book tour and coast to coast flights, etc. I was laughing still. The only thing I didn’t like was the wasted time on silly make-up questions….. The QOTD was pretty good for on the spot, and I’d say print the boarding pass at home and just walk right on, forget the whole thing.

  • Fiftysix bucks for a Cornas, wow. Good one, good show.

QOTD: I like those machines but it depends on the airport, some airports have a crowd around those auto check in consoles.

qotd: Kiosks leave everyone with a little more time to drink great wine! You have gotta love the airports with good wine bars in them.

I’m not in a hurry to read this guy’s book. What value did he really add to this show?

Not sure if the guest’s idea of terrior is what most of us think. I think his going for more of a cultural feeling than the flavor of the dirt.
We never heard what he was going to say because Gary was doing his usual ask a question and not let the guest answer. This was a bad episode because of Gary.
Just because he said he’d been catching the show for maybe a year doesn’t mean every show. He’s probably known of the show but not seen more than a few minutes of a few shows. I didn’t feel like he was posing as a vayniac at all. I also did not feel he was all about selling his book he’ll he never got to say much about the context of the thing.
Lame unprepared guest yes but the failure of the last two shows is all Gary. It seemed like he was trying too hard to guide the flow of the show while managing to drown out the points that Robert seemed to have a little passion for.
Gary or Mott, please tell the guests they have to as the question. Otherwise it’s an ambush and it sabotages the show’s finish.
How rude of Gary to talk about the Alaska Qotd which encouraged our guest to say that was a lame question.
    QOTD= What was it? (weak!)

  • Tea complexity vs Wine IMO there is no Comparison, Tea I love I drink a lot of Green, White, Black, Oolong all loose leaf too but they all taste what they are better quality just are better and smoother not really added flavour unless you add jasmine, or Bergamont or something like that

qotd: Haven’t Flown in a while so cant answer that

Tough episode. Repeatedly cutting off a stunned guest doesn’t make for good viewing…hmmm I do like the fact that GV has an array of guests on the show but this guy didn’t really say anything in 45 minutes. Coulda been stage fright but I won’t be running out to buy the book.

  • Enjoyed this 2-parter. A few comments:

    1. The guest is a WRITER. Gary is a VIDEO-TV-SALES dynamo. Gary himself has said *repeatedly* on gv.com that people who are more reserved or soft-spoken should still express themselves, be it through book, blog, video or whatever.
He’s done whole episodes saying stay with your own voice and DNA.

    2. Loved the digression into makeup on women, etc. Gary V is of the same mind on this as I am.

    3. Despite the title, I didn’t hear much about terroir. The brief bit about travelling up the river in the Rhone was good, but that was about it.

    4. JOEYdaMUSH: “No more Italian guests”?!? What are you talking about? He’s from Brooklyn and lives in Nice.

    5. Why was the guest wearing 2 shirts?

    6. Why do so many guests not know the format of the show? You ask them to posit the QOTD and they react like they’ve been asked to explain Fermat’s Theorem in Cantonese.

    Hey Gary !

Rhone wines… my first love and still some of my favourite styles in the world!

QOTD: I think those machines are great. Just saves a lot of time. I haven t seen them in Europe yet, but got a chance to check myself in when I was in the US working in the summers of 06 and 07.

  • The first part, because it was more discussion than tasting, had a much better flow to it. How often did Robert have that “deer staring at the headlights – have no idea – so just nod yes” look when Gary would ask him a Q?

You can tell that Robert couldn’t keep up with Gary when it came to the wine and the energy… I don’t think many ppl can.
