line of the day – ‘you, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the pear world’

Really enjoyed this episode – nice to hear the words of a truly masterful winemaker, and interesting to see him slip more and more French into the conversation. My highlight was when the guest used the term ‘make up’ to describe anything that affects the winemaking process, and Gary threw in a big sideways glance at the camera, as it’s a phrase he often uses himself.

    Very enjoyable show.

QOTD: I don’t feel that I have enough experience with white burgundy to be able to answer, but now I know which domaines’ wines will help me to continue my wine education in that regard! 🙂

QOTD: Balance, Minerality & Good Acidity are hallmarks of Meursault. That said, higher end stuff is a little too expensive for my budget. As a result, my wife and I drink very little Chardonnay.

Great show! I haven’t had a good bottle of white anything for a while. I don’t seem to have time for white when there is so much red to try. I will search for a good White Burgundy to try as the weather is heating up. Hopefully one of your guests bottles if I can pronounce or spell it. Can someone explain the borgoune angle? Is it cheaper White Burgundy. I thought Chablis was that play. Must be a region thing.
Can’t wait to try the pear brandy.

Burgundy should be true to place, elegant and thought provoking.

QOTD : Burgundy is one area I would love to find out more about – but very dificult to get into just due to prices – I’ve little more than the odd Bourgogne rouge. You look at Burgundy, and realise what great value Bordeaux can offer.

Another great episode from CRU!!! I really want to try that pear brandy…you have me very curious. I also have never had any white Burgundy from Meursault, I guess I have some homework to do.

    Castello,
The Bourgogne is a regional Burgundy. It’s a way for good value without spending on a Grand or Premier Cru. As far as the Chablis ,it’s a different location, vineyards, soil, etc. It is also mostly aged in stainless-steel while Cote de Beaune -Merusault are aged more in oak, so they’re two different styles.

We had a very nice Chablis Premier Cru last night. Crisp (the minerality?) but nice citrus flavors. Nicely balanced by the acidity, for a smooth, but lasting finish. That is what i like.

That was a great show. Gary, I’m surprised to see you drinking during a multi-show session. Will you be drunk at the end of the third one?

qotd: I haven’t tasted enough to have my own idea of classic white Burgundy. The ones I have enjoyed most have been very complex and seamless. They made me think another vintage of the same wine could be extremely different.

  • rowland

Qotd: I have no real experience, so im gonna go with what i read above, Chablis. Now you are my classical image of white burgundy!

Excellent episode. I very much enjoy listening to wine makers talk about their wines. And foreign wine makers are especially interesting because they have a different perspective on wine, food, and life than we do.

  • Fantastic guest… really true to his style and how he makes wine… as everyone should be.

QOTD: I have not had any white burgundy but definitely am in the market to get some!!

  • Nice, I like pear brandy. Like those bottles with the large pear inside them. Good stuff.

QOTD: my image of the white burgundy.- lots of aromas, specially grass and fruit but no wood, same goes for taste, no present or noticeable oak or any other wood for that matter. It has to do with regional characteristics for me.

Interesting show. Nice to see different types of drinks being reviewed together.

  • Two observations: 1. What a nose, Jean-Marc rocks the sniffy sniff. 2. I don’t know if Jeab-Marc watches much WLTV but he hit the question of the day out of the park in no time flat. Better than the more recent non-import guests.
Question: What type of pear taste did the brandy have? Bosc, Anjou, Bartlett?

QOTD: My white Burgundy experience is at a point where I can’t say what my classic interpretation would be. Nes pas?

PS- beautiful packaging on the Pear Brandy! I will check to see who the designer is.

I haven’t had many but recently I had one that was oaky and man was I surprised and bummed out. I then realized that I look for crispness, acid and the mineral, rocks that everyone talks about. Love that!

Thanks for asking and talking about his entry level wines (the ones in my price point) it sounds like he loves those too! Going to find one of those soon!

  • JCN

How can I come across some of his pear brandy?
