89/100

line of the day – ‘it’s like you see a 4ft 9in gal walking down the street…and then she beats the sh** out of you’

The guest wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either – a little bit too inclined to agree with GV. Highlight was the fact that Mott forgot to bleep out the first swearword to actually make it to air.

One time I found this brand of grape juices and their thing was different juices made by each classic wine varietal grape. So I thought it was a plate expander type of test to try them. The most interesting to me chardonnay. Those grapes are not good just as juice, in fact the juice was bad. They were all extremely different than any other (I guess) “concord grape juice” I had ever tried. I think I tasted 4 different types Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet. I don’t know much about the grape juice but I bet you can add enough sugar to any varietal and make it taste alright.

as always great show Gary keep em going.

    Final Four Secret Pack???

    Gary,
Now you need to get an MSNBC personality and do an all-French (at least old world) show, for the sake of balance!

  • QOTD: I’m guessing it has to do with the processing. The wine got a little bit a funk growing in the process where as the grape juice is going to be instantly filtered and maybe pasteurized so you get that pure fruit flavor.

Hey Clayton, nice job. To be honest, I was on edge, since I hate Fox & Friends, but you seem like the sort of guy I love to drink with. I liked your honesty in exploring your palate.
Good question, and since I haven’t had Evergreen I can’t say. But I’ve found that many of the big hyped up places completely obliterate any sense of terroir for overripe and over-concentrated flavor that makes the wines impossible to pair with food and undrinkable to my old world palate. I’ve had this time and again around Napa & Sonoma, at the big destination wineries. The wines will have overpowering intensity, hints of burnt coffee caramel (yuck) and way too much oak. Its more about ego than letting the vines speak for themselves. Maybe on the juice they kept it simple and let their good fruit shine through without all the winemaking ego.

Nice Show Gary – great guest, loved his whitty personality + his wife was very intuitive also. I must say that big-ass glass is huge – it was nearly the same size as Claytons wife….

Gary you mentioned that you are heading to NZ in late July…How bout darting over the Aussie land for a day or two.. its only a two hour flight.

QOTD ‘ Money doesn’t buy passion. Grape/wine quality comes from the heart and not from the wallet…. i’m sick to death of seeing and hearing about wineries that spend millions and millions of dollars on fancy-smancy wineries and vineyards and then delivering mediocre wines… I work in the wine industry and old saying ‘less is more’ is true in every aspect of winemaking..

QOTD – Not sure why but likely because they put more love in the juice and not in the wine.

2004 Nortstar Merlot is my guess for the big announcement tomorrow. It beat out 2004 Petrus in a bling tasting in Dec. 2008.

WOW. Okay this is a top-10 episode easily. Clayton has a great presence and you two played off each other really well!

QOTD: Hilarious, awesome question, and I have no idea how (they could have a terrible Pinot and a fantastic grape juice)!

I just discovered wltv and I have to say, its really been distracting me from med school, but that’s fine with me. I’ve been wanting to get into wine for a long time now and it’s been great to see how down to earth you make it. Thought that this was a great episode and seeing that big a** glass nearly engulf the wife’s face was hilarious.

QOTD: I don’t think Welch’s would make a very good wine, and grape juice is their job.

this was a good show….having guest(s) on that are just becoming wine savvy
is great. good rapport between you two.
there is no answer to the grape juice question..except that it takes so much more knowledge to make a good wine… and more finesse

  • One of the best shows in a while. I’m going to skip the QOTD beacuse I really have know nothing about that winery so I wouldn’t want to assume. What I do want to touch on is how hard I laughed out loud at my desk when Gary said, “then she turns around and beats the shit out of you.” So awesome.

QOTD: See Aussie Sammy S’s answer re: the wine being crap (also, has there ever been a winery anywhere that has never had a bad year?). As far as grape juice goes, with enough sugar and added apple juice (read that list of ingredients, sometime) it’s almost hard to screw it up.

Well…I think, and this is just my opinion, that the winery’s terroir is probably okay thus the good grape juice but they are way too invested in messing around with the science and not letting nature take its course. Just an uneducated guess…Could have something to do with saving money or making money by cutting corners. Like I said I’m guessing. What does GV think?
    Thanks for another fun show.
