line of the day – ‘it’s like you see a 4ft 9in gal walking down the street…and then she beats the sh** out of you’

The guest wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either – a little bit too inclined to agree with GV. Highlight was the fact that Mott forgot to bleep out the first swearword to actually make it to air.

As one chef said: “gravy/sauce covers a multitude of sins” I am guessing that the sugar does the same thing.

    Loved the show!

Wow she made that BIG ASS GLASS look even larger than normal!

Good show Gary…..I felt like I could relate to Clayton’s level of wine expertise (white belt w/stripe). It sucks that Oregon keeps getting poor reviews though; seeing how that’s my state. Just haven’t had the good ones on the show yet.

QOTD: If the grape juice is better than the wine, then quickly move on to find the gems of the small winery’s of Oregon.

Another great guest and show, killing it as usual.
QOTD: I would have to guess that something is off in the winery (maybe excess tinkering of the wine or unsanitary wine making?)…but the vineyard and the vines are quite good and producing decent fruit. Or maybe it is just that the fruit grown produced a flavor profile that was suitable for drinking unfermented but not after fermentation?? Great question, Great show!

Glad you visited Oregon, wish I could have steered you into a better direction than Evergreen.

QOTD: Evergreen is the bottom of the barrel of all of the other wineries around that area. A great trip for anyone coming to Oregon would be, in order, St. Innocent, The four Graces, Archery Summit, and then Domaine Drouhin Oregon. You want to eat at the Joel Palmer House, and then get your night cap and stay the night at Mcmenamins Hotel Oregon in McMinnville.

Thanks Gary for trying Oregon wines again.

Loved the show, especially the line about the old lady. Great guest.

I love grape juice; Welch’s and Kedem. Love that tart but sugary grape flavor. I think Manischevit’s makes good grape juice too, but their wine is really bad.

maybe you should do a show on grape juice.

Now that I watched the show. Good interaction! Cool Gar!

Loved the BigAss glass. It practically swallowed Sarah’s head.

  • Tooch

Needless to say I’m furious about the Eagles comments at the beginning of the show. It’s worth noting, on St. Patrick’s Day, that there’s only one REAL Green Team in the NFL and they’re in Philadelphia.

Plus, Gary, honestly…..you NEED to come to grips with the fact that Lito is an undersized corner that doesn’t have the speed and athleticism he did when he first came into the league.

QOTD: Clearly, they are in the wrong end of the grape business.

Awesome episode by the way. Gary just seemed like he was chillin’ with a friend and Clayton wasn’t pushing some agenda. I liked that.

Great job from everyone (Mott too).

Loved the Karate analogy by Clay too!

Great show Gary. It is a nice change of pace to have a guest without formal experience that just enjoys wine instead of an “expert”. I’m interested to check out Oregon for a wine trip. My fiance and I are looking for a great wine trip that’s not all about the wine but more overall experience. Where would you recommend? Thanks.

QOTD – I don’t know this specific vineyard but in general it seems like many of the big money vineyards are more about marketing than they are about quality product.

Clayton, the reason why the grape juice was great was not so much the grapes….but the sugar 🙂
    That would explain it!!
Or, the fruit in the vineyard is not so hot, or they dont know how to make a good pinot……but i bet it’s the sugar.

QOTD — maybe it was a bad year for pinot and a good year for sweet juice!

It is still fun to see when you sarcastically tell a guest they are “wrong” in their assesment of a wine. Goes to show people are still a bit uptight in the presence of a professional wine critic. Just have fun!

How many more ex-j-e-t-s jets jets jets is Mangini going to bring to my beloved Browns?

    Woof….Woof

QOTD: I think you liked the grape juice better for the same reason that desert wines get (artificially) high scores. Everyone loves things that are sweet and delicious.

Nice show, seemed to lead him along a little there GV, but props for actually knowing about the QOTD. Can’t really agree that the towns in Williamette are 50’s towns, they’re pretty much “small town America” through and through. Great people, who actually care about what they do and the people who stop by.

QOTD: If they were pouring their 07 wines then that would explain a lot as 07 was a pretty mediocre year at best, IMO. Lots of great places in the valley and we enjoyed Four Graces as well when we were out in the fall.

Fun show, not sure why people think its the best ever though. I do enjoy multiple guests though, adds another dynamic. As to the question, without ever having had the wine, I would say the fruit and juice must be good, but when they started screwing around with the wine trying to make it something its not, they get into some trouble. That’s just a guess.

  • I thought his wife was going to stick her entire head in that glass. (I saw you smirk, Gary!)LOL
QOTD: Anything overworked is more often than not going to suck. They probably just throw that fruit juice together for the heck of it.

PS- What are your thoughts on Jay Cutler? Jet or not?

  • Great episode Gary, very likable guest with great chemistry.

QOTD: It could be so many things, but I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and guess they are just going for a different style than Clayton likes. I’ve never had their wine though, so its just a guess.

Have there been any shows on wines from what could be considered crappy growing areas? Like a Colorado wine or something from South Dakota?

  • W Miree

Great show! Very entertaining! Both husband & wife were expressive of their tastes and feelings about the wine, and you gave us a good picture of their experience so that we could tell where they were comming from.

I thought the selection of the Sbragia chardonnay was a very good choice. It would certainly challange me, who am tired of “too much oak.” I have loved Sbragia’s wines while he was making them at Beringer, but I think Beringer is making wines since he left that are much more to my liking. Having said that, I think his own wines are becoming more to my liking (meaning less oak).

I agree with you that New Zealand is making some terric Pinot Noir. I have not had the highfield you tasted, but I have had several that are graping my attention.

I was disappointed in both your and his selections of wines from the Willamette Valley. He couldn’t have done much research (or used much judgement) on Oregon to settle in on those wineries to visit for the first time. And your selection would have been in my bottom 50 wineries. I hate to be negative, but there are so many great wineries in Oregon, I can’t understand why you picked the Patton to be representative.

Having said all that, I do respect your knowledge and great palate, and that basically says it all.

QOTD: Grape juice can be covered up by sugar. However with Oregon Pinot Noir they are hit or miss there is no middle ground.

    Miss you yesterday GV!
