There is no such thing as “typical” Chardonnay.. only the cliche Chard of over blowsy Cali stuff. But Chablis and Montrachet are both “typical” and not at all alike.

That was a really fun episode! And Gary, please don’t worry about censoring yourself, it doesn’t feel as genuine if it’s obvious you’re holding back something.

Clayton gets the award for most sniffy-sniffs in one show. I fell bad for non wine pros on the show. Sitting next to GV’s monster nose, and feeling the pressure to match the GV snozola sniff for sniff is a bit of pressure.

QOTD….My guess is that Evergreen couldn’t control the fermentation. Too much sugar means too much alcohol, but great grape juice.

I’m guessing that with the grape juice, it’s just the fruit you’re getting, whereas with their wines the can mess around with it more…

Agreed on the problem with Evergreen… I have a $3k credit with them (long story) and don’t know what the heck to order. Every wine I have tried from them (5 in all which they sent for tasting) has been fair to poor, nothing I’d rate better than an 85 – not good at $25-35 a bottle when I can get better from Wine Library for under $10…

Apparently I need to just stick to their grape juice and hazelnuts!

We EMBRACE Clayton for doing his homework and nailing the QOTD without deer in the headlights! Great guest, entertaining, and good quality honest commentary Interesting to note that he was not there plugging his wine book, wine, winery, or wine website yet still proved useful, relevant, and entertaining. This no agenda guest made for a better guest-based WLTV episode. We want, no we demand, more guests like this.

QOTD – For me it seems rational that a place be able to make good grape juice, the easiest grape-derived juice, yet unable to make good wine being that wine is a more involved and difficult process.

qotd:Too much thought and tinkering in the lab, or whatever can ruin a wine. Sometimes the best wines are the cheap ones. Just look at how awesome Vinho Verde is!

I really enjoy watching Clayton on FOX & Friends on the weekends. A very funny guy. who seems to be doing quite well in his limited wine experience.

QOTD: With grape juice, the grape is pretty much going to speak for itself. If you have crappy fruit, then you’re not going to be able to hide that at all. It sounds to me like they have a great vineyard, but maybe too much manipulation is going on in the wine making or possibly not too much, but the wrong techniques are being used. They could be still finding themselves.

Awesome Ep. I loved how you brought Clayton’s wife in. She’s real. Just a “regular Jane” who knows a thing or two about wine.
GV you are the man. It is great that you don’t let politics get in the way of wine & people. You’ll probably get FLAMED by some lesser people for hanging out with a person from FOX.

Really great to see someone who is really just starting to learn about wine on the show. Keep up the expansion of the pallet Clayton!
QOTD: You can’t make good wine from bad fruit, but sure as hell can screw up good fruit and make it a bad wine!

Fun! The guest, Clayton was lively and honest. The wines might not have been that great but the atmosphere was cool.

QOTD: I’ve never had a wine or a grape juice from the aforementioned winery, but some oenologist somewhere might not be paying attention to the raw material and therefore, the grape, which could have made a good wine, turned out not so great. As for the sweet grape juice, who doesn’t like juice?

Again, I gotta say your not giving the Willamette Valley a fair shake. There are dozens of producers for a similar price point that can bring the thunder for ya.
