line of the day – ‘it’s like you see a 4ft 9in gal walking down the street…and then she beats the sh** out of you’

The guest wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either – a little bit too inclined to agree with GV. Highlight was the fact that Mott forgot to bleep out the first swearword to actually make it to air.

QOTD: In my opinion, it could come down to what the biodynamic/terrior guys were talking about 1 or 2 weeks ago- you may have a great grape, great land to grow it on, but if you try to interject yourself into the process too much with all of the ‘technology’ or whizz-bang stuff you mentioned, you could take the great juice and overdo it so that its true character doesn’t come through in the wines. Sorry if that was too much of a run-on sentence!

Wow! SLAMMED evergreen winery! Soooo funny. I’d take a pass on that wine. nobody liked it apparently.
Great Epp! QOTD: maybe they just tried too hard on the wine…I’m not an expert…in fact I’m still very much in the dark.

nice show.that was the longest time i ve ever listened to somebody from fox news.i love oregon pinot noirs,my favs are panther creek, lemelson and o reilys.i tried the four graces, maybe expected to much, but didnt like it.repeating myself ,but i would like your opinion on corks ,screw caps ,sythethic corks,or other types of stoppers.lastly how can you store a 30 to 60 pinot,i know it depends on how its made? thank you

  • Phil M’Glassup

Whew, guess I’m in the minority but here’s proof that when those Fox guys are not bashing Obama, they literally bring nothing in the table. (Even when they ARE bashing Obama. . .. )
His delightfully tightly-sweatered spouse nearly redeemed the show but I’ve been Commanded not to covet my neighbor’s wife (fortunately never saw this joker in my nabe).
Rather than have irrelevant guests bulls–t and blather, maybe you want to tighten up the showreturn to your mission which is to educate your audience, a task you usually do a bang up job at.
Hey only your best friends will tell ya.

  • Nice program Gary.

Clayton: the culprit in your Evergreen experience likely is the fermentation or the aging/conditioning. I am a research chemist with several years’ worth of experience in different fermentation situations.

Flavor in fermented beverages (both beer and wine) can be affected by very small changes in parameters during fermentation (temperature of fermentation, type of yeast, variations in acidity/alkalinity).

Additionally, oxidation (during aging) can also affect the flavor immensely. The way that both of these phenomena take place is by changing the volatile compounds in the wine.

These volatile compounds include fatty acids, esters, ketones, et cetera. Some are desirable and complementary, providing characteristic flavors and aromas, while others are not. All can hold sway over the flavor, aroma, and perhaps even perceived mouth-feel of your selected beverage (whether that is wine or beer).

The fact that the actual juice didn’t display such negative characteristics – at least to your palate 🙂 – indicates that this is likely not an effect of the agricultural practices, but more a management issue once it hits the winery.

My best to you – Shannon Ehlers.

QOTD – over-ripe fruit, poor winemakers, focus on technology and not terrior, high salary for marketers, low salary for farmers, bad land (only good for juice), bad vintage, drinking wine too early. could be any/all of these things.

qotd: ‘he watches,’ seriously, that guy agreed watched gary the whole episode and agreed with everything. he even made a subtle attempt to breath in while tasting at one point, looked like he almost lost it. no thoughts on his own except to say the wine smelled like fruit, and….earth. eesh.

good show though, as a portland resident it’s always good to hear how the wines we see everyday stack up to the rest. another entertaining round as usual. keep them coming.

From what I’ve heard, Pinot is hard to grow and make. I’d say 2 out of three I get are very dissapointing. I’ll stick with my big ass cabs and blends.

  • Not quite sure what you’re doing alongside such a person, GV. Strange bedfellows….

All the twitters in the world will not save you from being on the wrong side of history.

I agree with KenP. For a non political show, you’ve just promoted the most biased network ever.

QOTD: havent been there, not sure. Maybe the juice just tastes sweet which makes it an ‘easier’ drinking style for many.

gary, i love politics, after all i am studying it in university right now, but i absolutely hate it when anything else i love (like this show) get ruined by including it. that’s why i’m grateful you didn’t bring politics into today’s show, and i really hope we all keep the comments that way.

qotd: i have no idea, though the explanations of others make sense.

a return to the old set was….comforting

QOTD: wine ain’t no grape juice, son! (said in an Okie accent….)

Good episode, and great guest, you continue to have fun and that is the key.

Forget the political comments, even conservative folks like wine.

QOTD – although I am a total neophyte, is has to be the fermentation process, the yeasts, and I have also heard that Pinot Noir is a finicky grape.

Good lord people, stop trying to make this political. Gary met the dude and liked him and he’s a wine drinker. There was not one iota of anything resembling politics…except from some of the idiot commentary.

Sbragia Home Ranch Chard tastes like butter rum lifesavers. Everything I’ve tried from them has been so super oaky. Definitely need to try the Highfield PN, though.

QOTD: That is the funniest question ever…I have no idea, but at least there was one thing redeeming about your trip there.

Fun show!!! Love it when people are easy in front of the camera.

QOTD: It does hurt your feelings when you pay the big bucks for wine and it’s icky! So they paid big bucks to fit up the winery and the wine’s not up to par…but the grape juice is…hmmmmm. It’s all show…time to back it up.

  • Loved the little bits of silence after the sniffy sniff.
Nice guests. Plus, it’s always good to see guests wearing the wrist bands.
Shows they’re true fans of the show… maybe.

QOTD: Because they put no love into the wine. They take the wine seriously, and it loses the love. They make the grape juice on the side, probably have fun with it, and it shows.
That is my completely awesome guess.

Great QOTD, i love it when people get mad about something and show it. Angry Passion.
