Thanks for the great episode. It was nice to see someone who might not have a ton of tasting experience but isn’t afraid to say what they think about the wines. My girlfriend used to be afraid to say what she really thought about wines, but once she overcame that she started giving more precise tasting notes than mine.

qotd: very easily — As Gary said, grape juice is delicious. As others have said, it’s really easy to make bad wine, even with good grapes.

QOTD: It’s not just so simple as great juice makes great wine. And you can’t blame it all on the winemaker. Think about it. The juice from a concord grape tastes great too, but even Nicholas Joly would make crappy wine out of it. The juice from apples tastes great, but it doesn’t make great wine. The juice from an orange tastes great, but it doesn’t make wine at all. Vinifera grapes contain astronomical amounts of anthocyanins (and a whole host of other compounds) that just don’t exist in other fruit. So if you taste grape juice that tastes great but doesn’t make great wine it probably just means that the vineyard (a flat-land, young, over cropped, over-irrigated vineyard along highway 99) hasn’t been cared for well, so the fruit, while sweet, doesn’t make good wine.

It pisses me off that Clayton claims to have “researched” his trip to Oregon and then tastes at Duck Pond (the Gallo of Oregon) and Evergreen (home of the Spruce Goose fro chrissakes…and we all know the connection between aviation and great wine). C’mon. And you didn’t try to defend Oregon at all, GV! You know better. Lemelson. Ken Wright. Cristom. Hamacher. Argyle. Soter. Archery Summit. DDO. White Rose. Beaux Freres. Lange. Elk Cove. St. Innocent. Scott Paul. Stag Hollow. Patty Green. How many of these have you tried GV? Great Show, I enjoyed the guest. As I live in Ohio I will attest to the fact that the Concord grape makes excellent quality grape juice but inferior wine.

QOTD: I am amazed that there was any buildup for Evergreen. We went to see the Spruce Goose and it would have been easy to try the Evergreen, but we opted not to because it never occurred to us that it might be a decent wine. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about wine making or grape juice making – I really don’t like grape juice and definitely could not tell a good year from a bad year there.

QOTD: I know nothing about Evergreen, but the newest and best technology in wine making, and farming, does not make it the best. I can put a crappy gift inside a really nice expensive box, with extravagant wrapping, but the gift is still as crappy. I don’t know what all their spending that money on, but it is helping them build their brand, and make them more accessible and bring more attention. There was something about them that brought you through the door. Maybe it was the fact that they had spent all that money on new processes, and fancy irrigation.

Good god people, forget the politics and just enjoy the show. Would you have preferred that he not mention who he was and it just be some random guy sitting there as though Gary just grabbed some random shopper guy out of the store.

QOTD Grape clones, weather, terroir, harvesting, crushing, fermenting, blending, sugar content, alcohol content, aging & barrel type all have an effect on wine. Grape juice – not so much…
