EP 646 2004 Italian Brunello’s are Red Hot, Today Gary Talks About Them.

Wine Spectator scores the 2004 Brunello’ds a 92-97 as a vintage and Wine Advocate scores Tuscany a 96 but Antonio Galloni says “There is absolutely no reason to get worked up about 2004 Brunello and commit capital without tasting the wines first.” So today Gary Vaynerchuk will try the 1st two that have come in!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Argiano Brunello Di MontalcinoBrunello di Montalcino
2004 Camigliano Brunello MontalcinoBrunello di Montalcino

Extremely hyper GV in this episode and as a result the show is a bit too full on. Mott’s first ever link up suggestion the highlight

Gary this show was f-in LEGIT. i laughed about 5 times outloud because of your gitty self. keep crankin em out!!! been watchin everyday for year and months now…

QOTD1- I love the talk about wines from everywhere
    QOTD2- FORGOT
QOTD3- The word “legit” is legit, that’s all 🙂

  • David T

QOTD1: Share with us as much knowledge as you can! I loved the long info about Brunello, & enjoyed the talking between wines as well.

QOTD2: Legit makes me think of Guy Fieri from the Food Network because he says it all the time. You should have him as a guest!

If you want a wine that smells/tastes like bacon (tho I don’t know how it would pair), try the 06 Goats do Roam red. It’s like they squeezed all the juice out of some smoked bacon.

  • Slushpuppy

The asides are fun and interesting for me. I really don’t think that you need to read the past episodes comments; anyone that is interested in these should be able to read them for themselves; thus, more time for your ‘stories’. Smell it first. TR

QOTD1: The more wine-nerdy talk the better

QOTD2: Most movies go a bit flat, isn’t is just part of movie story telling?

QOTD3: Legit, well duping items in Diablo I is the first that comes to mind 🙂

  • John Farrin

If you’re going to let your playthings (SXSW) get in the way of episodes we’re going to have to talk 🙂

    QOTD: Flabby is fine!!!!!!!!

QOTD: Legit is pure, real etc.

  • So, its “Heat” Now, and not “Thunder” ?? Go back to “Thunder” when describing the awesomeness of a wine Gary.
-I would love to hear more about your wine experiences outside of the show. Caught the Petit Syrah over twitter and you put that place on my radar. Need more info about more wines, always.
-Bacon+Wine – I would LOVE to see that show gary. Bacon+wine, FTW!
-Awesome Movie with a bit of snooze… Probably “The Green Mile” or “Jeremiah Johnson” both are excellent movies with a few minutes of boredom mixed in their middles.
QOTD: “Legit” I think of white, teenage, hip-hop and rap artists from the 80s and early 90s. Legit is not back in the American Vocabulary, no matter how much you want it to be. Stick with improving the American wine culture, Gary. Leave English to the professors, essayists, and poets.

QOTD: Definitely flabby. Keeping it loose is always the way to go.

As for legit, I now think of you. Own that word!

  • Too legit to quit. MC Hammer and parachute pants. I am a big fan of Brunelos and these two are usually in my purchasing every year that is good. I have heard nothing but good about 2004 in Tuscany and am looking to add them to the cellar. Tried to get through Vicky, Christina, Barcelona last night and it had several sleep inducing lags in it.

  • Semi-QOTD: Talking about wines you enjoy outside the Thunder Show is not only on topic, it’s on mission! It’s all about trusting our own palates and trying new things and you demonstrate that every day both on and off camera.

Rushmore. Great movie. Loses its focus a little in the 6th inning but comes back strong.

Soon as I return to Italy I’ll have to try those Brunellos. Unfortunately, the price here in the U.S. is prohibitive.
    qotd:
    1. On point with a bit of flab
2.Recently I saw ‘Duplicity’ and while there was a lot to recommend…it became
at least 15 minutes worth of tiresome in the middle.
3.Legit-Valid, bona fide, on the up and up, the real McCoy

Aside QOTD: I think it’s impossible to make your brain say anything except what it wants to say at that moment, which is one of the great things about you. You often seem surprised by what you say, which means that you have a highly developed imagination, intuition, and connection-making intelligence that’s highly entertaining as well as unpredictable. Robin Williams has a very similar conversation style, but with more humor and irony built in.

Legit QOTD: Hammer, like everybody else

Someday I’d like you to address the question of where Italian wines really come from. I had an Italian friend tell me that there is no way that Tuscany and vicinity can supply the worldwide demand for its wines, so most of them for export are widely blended with Sicilian and other bulk juice. He said you know a real Tuscan wine by the Gallo Nero stamp. Was he full of it?

  • Paul in CT

Great show. And, I am a big fan of asides like your Peachy Canyon Petite Sirah recommendation.

QOTD: Legit, Hammer springs to mind, but a great word given its almost pervasive lack of application to today’s news (e.g., Madoff, Steroids in Sports, the financial crisis, etc.)

Question back to you: Are the rave reviews for 2004 Brunello confined to Tuscany or did other regions in Italy have equally solid years, like Piedmont? If limited to Tuscany, any baby brunello’s to look out for? Thanks.

    QOTDs
1 – talk the talk gary, spread the knowledge. On top of which, you might find even more to say about the day’s wines while thinking out loud about the business in general.
2 – James Bond? They always go a bit ‘hurrrrrm’ somewhere in the middle, but are almost all awesome.
3 – Read other comments before posting, and now MC Hammer is all I can think of. 2 legit; 2 legit to quit!

Ever seen Goodfellas? or am I going to start a riot right now?

    Fun and Flabby.

  • Gary,

A little tangent is good, but don’t get carried away.

    Legit = authenticity.

You’ve got me interested. I’ll be looking for ’04 Brunellos now. Can’t wait to try some.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Legit show!

QOTD: Legit, being a slang, shortened form of legitimate from the Latin “legitimus”, meaning lawful, is usually used as a synonym of acceptable (Collins Gage Canadian Paperback dictionary). I think “legit” is a legit term 😉

Good to have you back Gary, we missed you (try and get SOME rest)!

I personally like the informality, the small talk. It’s nice to hear what you have been enjoying on a non-professional level.

A bacon pairing show would be sooooo cool! I’ve enjoyed white pairings (Domaine Causse Marines Les Greilles Gaillac 2006 )with ham and cheeze frittatas.

I’ve had a 2006 Argiano Rosso di Montalcino. They are out already here in Québec. Very bold and rustic. Great “traditional” flavor profiles: Dark cherry with the pit, cigar box, cinnamon stick, etc. Heavy deposit in the bottle which means DECANT!

Keep up the amazing work! Tight show!

    Big ups!

QOTD #1: The more info the better as far as I’m concerned.

QOTD #2: “Apocalypse Now” – the scenes with Marlon Brando rambling on.

QOTD #3: Legit – Good enough to take it’s place among the best (e.g. The Corvette vs. Ferrari, Porsche, etc.).
