Solid show, nothing crazy.
To be honest Sauvignon Blanc gets so much exposure these days that it’s hard to get too pumped about it.

QOTD: Living in Chicago, I always enjoy the moment when friends start drinking white wines, instead of reds, because it means spring is here. On the flip side, you know fall is here when your friends all ask for reds at parties. So I am looking forward to drinking lots of whites, especially NZ Sauv Blancs and South African Chenin Blancs.
Not into the pipi du chat!

    GV,
Looking forward to some Riesling this spring. How about some more Alsace on the show?
It will be nice to sip on Zind Humbrecht on nfl draft day. 6 picks in the top 100 should help get the Pats back the their rightful place on top. I’ll watch for you and those goofy, green J-E-T-S fan on ESPN. I especially enjoy the horror on your faces when your first pick is called ………”The Jets select Jeff Lageman”. hahahahaha.

Just had a Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc yesterday and it was fantastic especially at 9 bones from costco.

I am excited about the 2007 Ca. Pinots I hear it was an epic year…

GOOD SHOW..I LIKE IT WHEN YOU GO ONE ON ONE WITH A COUPLE WINES OF THE SAME VARIETAL.
IM LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME KOSHER WINES THIS WEEK. ESPECIALLY GALIL MOUNTAIN.
HAD A CHARDONNAY LAST WEEK THAT WAS OUTSTANDING FOR ITS QPR.

  • Harry

Solid, tight show. This solid analysis and background is what hooks me as a Vayneiac. Glad to see you’re back in the saddle.
Qotd: I’m looking forward to drinking some of my friend’s Aum Cellars Tres Joyas, a white blend of Viognier, Sauv Blac and Symphony (a cross of orange muscat and pinot gris) that I got to help blend and bottle, among many other wines I hope.

Gary, you’ve done my wife’s favorite wine! Whenever we go tasting Sauv Blanc, she wears her favorite T-shirt that says “Tart, yet Full-bodied”!

  • Excellent show Gary! The Chasing Venus sounds like an interesting experiment for the palate — I’m interested to try it, even if I’m not sure how well it will go over with me.

OOTD: I’m with Danny — Alsace is a great region, and rieslings are always nice in the spring 🙂

    Great show Gary,

Quick observation, being Canadian I would have to say that Kim Crawford has really killed it as the go to New Zealand Sav Blanc; I’m really surpised I’ve not seen it being review on the thunder show. It even made spectators top 100 this year (the 08 vintage).

QOD – Sparkling!! I think it would be the perfect time to have an episode on these bad boys.

  • my2cents

Very good episode. Nice and real.

I usually expect wines with lots of exposure and wide availability to be good from year to year but not anything too remarkable. I feel like it’s hard to keep quality up to 90 points and above when they make millions of bottles. But then I expect to pay prices that reflect quality of the wine and not the name. Maybe I assume too much.

Does a slight dill on the nose mean it smells like pickles?

Grass and crushed rock AKA “wine on the driveway” to me.

Qotd: Oh hey wait a minute…it’s spring already! Watching today’s episode I got a craving for some Sauv Blanc. Time for a store run.

    Thanks Gary!

  • Mike Diz

I have been a predominant red wine drinker for a while. This year I have really gotten into whites, especially White Burgs. Can’t wait to sit out by the pool and drink some delicious white vino!!!

Side note: I have recently been enjoying reds from Austria as well. Especially Blaufrankisch. Would love to see a show on Blaufrankisch.

Very focused show today. You must have slept at a Holliday Inn last night.

QOTD:Seeing that I live near the Finger Lakes in New York, rieslings will be the goto white for me(I tend to be a homer). Really like the 2007 Dr Konstantin Frank dry riesling.

GARY – Total wine newb question: What would happen if you poured a little of each of those wines into the same glass and swirled it a bit and gave that mixture a sniffy-sniff and a whirl?

I’m guessing that would be like wine sacrilege?

It’s got my curiosity piqued though. Would be an interesting way to end the show when you do a testing of several of the same varietal like this.

But maybe it would insult your more serious wine aficionados and viewers?

Cat Pee? Actually will be funding some wine consumption, our cat is in a study that is supposed to prevent peeing out of the litter box

Nice episode, spring is finally here.

QOTD: Plan to drink more whites, becoming a fan of Torrontes, and always have been a big fan of Rieslings.

    Enjoy opening day.

I’m with you there on the Cloudy Bay, it’s good but over-rated and over-priced. It’s an iconic wine here in the UK too.

QOTD: I’ve got some left-bank Bordeaux 03’s I’m surprised how well there’re showing already, so going to be opening more over the coming months.

PA wine shops sell a lot of Nobilo Sauv Blanc. I may try it. I had Clos de Chance (the name may be correct or similar to this) sauvignon blanc from CA recently and it was enjoyable.

QOTD: In terms of whites, this spring I will have a Gruner Veltliner. I haven’t had one since last summer. I haven’t had a gewurztraminer in a few years and it’s on the to do list. I’m also looking forward to some Saint Veran and some Muscadet de Sevre et Main. Oh and definitely Torrontes. I had one last week and it was good, sniffy sniff was sweet but the tasty taste was nice and dry.

For reds I’m riding the malbec train and I’ve be sampling a few. Also I have a tannat-merlot blend I’m curious to try. I had a wonderful Chehalem pinot noir this weekend, mmm. Finally, love my spanish reds and whites any time of year.

That was a fun show Gary, though I’m surprise that you didn’t bring out the Kim Crawford Sav Blanc…that’s the one that seems to be at every store on the planet…(I think it’s pretty good too)

QOTD: I’ve got a few bottles of L’Hospital White Bordeaux I got from WL Had one, and it rocked my face off, looking forward to planning a meal around it.

    You should review it!

Exellent show! Nice and early. I’ve had a bottle of Geyser Peak Sav Blanc in the fridge for months. Today may be the day.
Actually I recently joined our local pbs’s wine club at kqed. They sent me 6 high dollar wines from thoughout the world and I’m exited to try them out. I’m very tempted to join your club and probly will soon.
I want to hear a little hype for the THUNDER CRUISE! R U gonna make it?
