Solid show, nothing crazy.
To be honest Sauvignon Blanc gets so much exposure these days that it’s hard to get too pumped about it.

NZ sav blancs seem to be a good overall value. I will have to try more of them
QOTD viognier from Chandler Reach winery in Washington

QOTD: This summer I hope to discover at least one beautiful rosé from Provence. Great show, Gary — you’re playing to your strength now, and I’m sold on the Chasing Venus. Keep it up!

  • I am having a little wine right now, but all I am getting is cat pee, pretty wierd…. Great show, I am going to try those.

QOTD: I am interested in drinking some South American wines, I have enjoyed a few cabs from that area lately that were tremendous.

  • Light reds and Italian and Spanish whites and the odd Hendricks and tonic.

Cab Franc, Grignolino, Beaujolais and maybe some Riesling. I don’t get quality time with a nice German riesling nearly as much as maybe I ought to.

  • I never knew New Zealand was so famous for their SB’s. Good show and lots of good information for a wine newbie like myself.

QOTD: Well, now I’m excited to try some of the wines from this show. 😉 I also can’t deny a lovly Vulvin Muscat from Oliver Winery here in Bloomington, Indiana. It’s was $25 a bottle, but I really enjoyed this unique wine last time I went tasting.

GV, I’ve been watching since episode #-167… does that mean I’ll get props from you on the show? I can’t understand why the last couple of posts you’ve read put that info in the comments? Is that really useful information for the rest of us? Isn’t that like saying “Look, I’ve been a Browns fan since 1978, therefore I must be better than someone who has only been a fan since 1982… This activity is a bit like the folks that post top ten entries; yes, it’s harmless, but also meaningless…

Big ups to the Buckeyes fan’s post you read today, though I disagree, and say BIG TEN REPRESENT! Save the dirt naps for next season, MSU.

QOTD: I’m really looking forward to drinking the dry hard ciders I made this winter, and getting back into craft beer a bit. Once you get away from beer for a while, you forget how good a big toasty porter really is. I always love the Rose’s that come out in the Spring too!

Funny, we had a sauvingon blanc blind tasting just 4 weeks ago with a Gladstone, a Kaituna, a Cloudy Bay and a Sancerre. The outcome was a bit the same, we found the Cloudy Bay to be a solid sauvingon blanc but it didn’t win blind. Gladstone won our hearts and at half the price it was phenomenal. If you can get your hands on one I’d highly recommend you do so.

    QOTD: French whites and bubblies!

Great episode!! This is probably my favorite white varietal. I just cant get enough cat pee!!!

QOTD: I’ve been wanting to drink more NY wines. I had a bottle of Swedish hill dry-Riesling and I want to see what other great wines are in the area. Any suggestions?

I’ve all but given up on the NZ Sauv. Blancs. That grassy, cat pee just kills me. Although, I do like the Mahi. That, to me, is a very nice wine.

QOTD: Lots of Rose, Loire Valley, Chablis, Macon, and white Rhones.

  • Hi Gary,
Nice show today and would agree with you about two of those wines but here in New Zealand I have never heard of Chasing Venus Sav/Blanc. I am interested to see whether we can get some. Rock on!

QOTD: Albarino, Beaujolais, and maybe we’ll finally find a killer rose’. Though if the spring keeps on being this chilly we might go back to making mulled wines!

Thanks for the solid show today.

long time watcher first time commentor, have actually emailed you a couple of times. QOTD response, im excited to drink anything Spain/Portugal, for 2 reasons, 1 my family is from northern Spain about 4 generations ago, now residing in San Antonio, Texas. and 2 we are going to Spain this April, my first time goin and i know its going to be amazing. I dont have a particular favorite Spanish/Portugal wine, but my second favorite country for wine is Chile. Tonight I’m drinking Smoking Loon, its an old time favorite of mine. Funny thing happend when i was eating dinner. I was eating salad with italian dressing and drinking SL, and i noticed i didnt enjoy the back end at all. It was just horrible. But after the salad, i drank some water to clense the mouth and started on the tuna steak and spicy rice i was having for the main course, and i noticed that i loved it when paired with the main dish. I mean i have had SL before, but it was just weird to go from having a horrible taste to loving the taster on the 2nd round. And then i ate an oatmeal raisin cookie for dessert (FAVORITE) and after i was done, continued to drink SL, and had an ear waxy taste in my mouth for the after taste. All in all an interesting wine night. Well g2g, watching opening day and my ‘Stros are dying to the Cubbies at the moment. Probably too long of a comment for you to read on the show, but good to finally leave one. Peace. -Jake-

It’s taken me a long time, but I’m finally commenting!

My girlfriend and I have been loving NZ Sauvignon Blancs lately. We just had a wine tasting party where we passed around grapefruit, lemons, limes and small cups of passion fruit juice to give everyone an idea of what to look for in the NZ Sauv Blanc…and then gave everyone a Pouilly Fume for the “Old World” comparison. Nobilo is about $11 around here…so we get that one a lot.

QOTD: I’m down the road from Whitecliff Winery here in New Paltz. A couple weeks ago I tasted their not yet bottled Awosting White and immediately told the winemaker how much it smacked up a NZ SB. Getting a wine that’s grown and made down and chilling out on my deck with it is a real treat.

Request of the day – review some Hudson Valley Wines! There’s some neat stuff going on in Southern NY.

Great show – I’m a fan of NZ Sauvignon blancs, so it’s always nice to get a new perspective

QOTD. You’ve got me exploring rieslings this year – so lots of those on the menu. I’ve also got a couple Okanagan rose’s i’ve been sitting on that are screaming for a sunny day on the deck.

  • Interesting, I’ve never had New Zealand Whites. Good Show.

Question for Gary: what’s with the sign on the wall: Cat Pee? is it subliminal for the wines?

QOTD: I’m looking forward to drink more rosé and sparkling wine actually, we even have a list.

QOTD: Rose season especially here in Florida ’cause it already crazy warm… last year Branham Estates made what they called a “petite rose” (Rose of Petite Sirah) i had a couple of bottles last summer and i remember really digging them, but i got them at a private tasting so it’s doubtful i’ll get the chance… oh well keep exploring right?

  • Anthony Aldorasi

Well this July I’ll be 21 and drinking as many different varietals that I possibly can. So my first few bottles might be some vino verde and definitely some chards.

Gary when will we see a Retsina show! this still is so under the radar for most people.

Any who keep up the good work!
