WOW! Phenomenal show and a great guest! I’ve always wanted to know more about absinthe. I thought it was still illegal in the US (or they only sold watered-down versions). I will definitely pick up a bottle!

Thanks, this was a great episode! Hmmm, Gary, you’ve done absinthe, vodka, beer (more than once), mezcal, and some weird promotional blood-like product. I’m not saying I mind (except maybe the last one), but don’t you think Madeira is more related to the wine world than any of these? Especially nice, old vintage Madeira? It’s been a while, and I wasn’t going to bring it up again after you mentioned this topic as a possible show, but I figure this is the time.

qotd: Let’s just say I was surprised and humbled that my first two choices before looking this up (Spain and Australia) weren’t even close to the top of the list.

  • Thanks for all the kind words!

I did want to respond to TexJag’s comment: “Shame they brought more of the society brands and not some of the worldwide primaries like Jade?s [sic].”

There was indeed a method to our madness. Initially, when I found out I’d be doing the show, I contacted every distiller I know, asking if they’d like to participate. The first four that responded got the spot. That’s really the only way I could be fair.

Believe me, I’d LOVE to have tasted 10 or 12, but that would have been a LONG and probably fairly ugly show. 🙂

Also of note, Ted Breaux (producer of Jades) is also a Society member.

    Hope that clarifies some things!

Great guest. Passionate and well spoken but with a slightly lower burning fire in his approach. GV, what is up with the shirts / table cloth running on a steady B Ravens theme? Peace.

Shut Up! This quest is a moron, he dismisses all the Chech-style absinth’s just by saying if there’s no Anis, it’s not Absinth at all! Who the hell does this guy think he is! Gary… i’m disappointed. Please just stick to wines, ok?!

  • AT LAST! Been a long-time Absinthe drinker (yes, pre-2004 too). Nice to see this finally coming to light. Really recommend the Ted Breaux Jade series. It costs a little more, but remember that one ounce yields four ounces. We cracked open a bottle of Breaux’s Jade Verte Suisse at our last poker party. After everyone got over their “what the hell is this stuff” reaction, there were soon smiles all around.

The preparation is crucial in enjoying the experience. Watch the water as it “louches” in the Absinthe. Neat effect that really adds to the mood of drinking La Fee Verte (The Green Faerie). Real Absinthe-heads are all about the ritual, and part of judging and rating Absinthe is the behavior of the drink during preparation.

    Well done GV!

Great Show Gary and Brian! I tried Absinthe straight for the first time a couple months ago and couldn’t fathom drinking it. Now I’m definitely going to try it again the correct way. Thanks for the great demo.

Wow! What a great show! I’ve read about absinthe and seen the “green monster” artwork. It’s such an interesting subject. I’ve only had Absenta from Spain a long time ago so I’ll have to look into some of these brands. Thanks for all the info, fun, fun show!

Gary: As a Chicagoan, I have to say that the last un-named drink sounds a lot like Malort, a Swedish-style undistilled wormwood made here which…well, all you need to know about Malort is here:

  • I thought this was a VERY interesting episode. How cool is the process of making this, and heck, even fixing a glass of it? Really neat change of pace, I thought you did an excellent job with this guest, didn’t talk over him, or really cut him off (once maybe 🙂 Overall, A+ on this one Gary, home-run!

Wow! What a great guest Brian was. So knowledgeable and calm in his explanations. Even Gary was restrained in admiration. Great job to both!

    And keep them coming!
