I like this guest, he took some body blows and rolled with them really well. Not the sort of wines i’d go for but good luck to him, at least he’s honest.

QOTD- Don’t care in the least. Just want good wine at the right price

Nice show and like to hear the business behind the wine. Good guest and I wish him the best.

Gary- How can you not have opened the pizza and tried the wines with the pizza!!!!!! I mean come on! The wines are called PIZZA VINO! He says he made the residual sugar level to match the pizza and, hello, no pizza eaten. Should add a point or two to your scores

  • Dan

Oof! You cut him off when you introduced the first wine, completely! That’s OK though, I still love ya. I respect him for being honest with his mission statement. Oh, and I’m from Minnesota, and I appreciated the “Don’tcha know,” even though the only people that talk like that here live out in the boonies.
QOTD: I really don’t mind where the grapes come from. I’m impartial both ways, it’s all about what my pallet thinks.

Nice show. It seems we all apreciate the honesty of our esteemed host and the courage of his guest. I love hearing about QPR and this episode, which is free btw, tops the QPR charts!

QOTD: The only thing that bugs me about where the wine comes from is when it’s a bunch of excess, crap juice and the price doesn’t reflect that.

Gary, thank you, the shop talk helps us to become better wine consumers.

QOTD: For 90% of my purchases all I want is good, distinctive wine at a good price. Oh, and don?t lie to me.

He trademarked a pizza on a bottle ? what a country!

Good show. Great guest. I hope the pizza label makes it to my state, so I can try it – even if Gary wasn’t crazy about it. Gary did a great job letting him talk and finish his stories!

QOTD: My strong perception is the smaller estate grown wines will always be better. But, on the off chance the “negotiant” wine tastes better I’ll go with it.

  • Wow! I am impressed – virtually no interruptions, Good Job Gary!

QTOD: The Palette is all that matters. I go by taste.

Very Interesting Guest, even though he’s a Browns fan. Its cool to here about the dirty secrets of the the Industry. QOTD: It about Value where ever it comes from. I’m not tasting the label, I’m tasting the juice.

Why for you not try them with the pizza Gary?

    QOTD: Makes no difference.

Great Guest. Honesty, some of the best bottles I ve had are non-estate. I would like to see quality as opposed to reputation.

Something about this guest irks me. Maybe it’s just because he seems like the anti-GaryV. I don’t like that he pairs his wines to his labels instead of the other way around. I don’t like that his primary concern–money–seems to have overtaken his concern for a decent wine. I also found it painful to listen to him defend his wines. It’s clear, GV, that you would’ve been even worse on the wines if the winemaker hadn’t been sitting next to you.

  • QOTD: all things being equal quality wise, I definitely respond to the romance of an estate winery and a good story more than a slick label and marketing campaign. but hey, if you’re selling good juice at a good price, why not?

I enjoyed the honesty of the guest, I guess if money is the main goal, then he is achieving it.
QOTD- I say it does not matter, but I like to drink stuff that I think at least everyone is not drinking

  • Gary,

Good show. I love that you stuck to your guns and kept it real even though it might have been a bit awkward for your guest. It’s obvious that he doesn’t produce the best wine in the world, but some alright wine if the price point is low enough.

QOTD: Ah, I do love the romance of loving local farmers and their products. I enjoy our local market every Saturday morning and their is somthing satisfying about supporting the toils of the littleman. That being said, I do know that some of the many wines I enjoy are not estate grown. Actually, I was tasting recently at one of my local wineries, Oliver winery, and pitted their estate pinot versus their non-estate version. The non-estate won hands down. Sad? Not to me. They still fermented, blended and produced those wines. People should take pride in the quality of the products they produced even if they had a bit of help along the way with the bits and pieces.

I actually don’t drink much wine with food right now, but I do love pizza so we’ll have to see what happens…

QoTD: I am definately all about the “good” wine, regardless of where it comes from. For me, the romance in wine is the company you share it with.

Great show. What a genuine guy.

QOTD: Good fruit is good fruit, no matter who grew it. Three words, Beckstoffer To Kalon… How many wineries produce their best wine from fruit they negotiated to purchase year in and year out from Mr. Beckstoffer’s magic plot of land in Napa?

I appreciate the romance, but will always trust my palate.

    Cheers!

One more quick thought, I said I would choose the “good” wine, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the overly fruity or sugary one. What I really consider to be good is a thought provoking wine that is pleasant. I love searching for interesting things like broccoli and baklava in wine.

Perhaps your best show ever … why? It was REAL. Finally straight talk and real answers – wouldn’t it be interesting to hear the “estates” talk openly and honestly?! Gary – Joe handled everything you threw at him with professionalism and grace – did you tip him off beforehand???

QOTD : if it tastes good, pairs well with dinner AND saves me money?! I’m in.

enjoyed the show very much, i’m no wine expert i go by taste and if i like one i continue to buy it. I also like the pinot girgio. All in all Joe seemed to know his wine, i was thinking the pizza would clense the pallett!!!

  • You’re obviously kidding about Santa Claus…right? The whole concept about niche marketing and label design had me glued. I felt a little dirty afterwards, but it was very interesting.

QOTD: The truth of the matter is I’d rather not know at all.

Great show. Great guest. Ingenious brands!

QOTD: Good wine is good wine period.

  • I am a first time viewer (ring bell) and enjoyed the show very much. Am wondering if the pizza boxes I saw were empty and if not then why didn’t you two try the wine with some slices?

Impressive performance by Mr. JZ…I don’t think I could follow Gary in a conversation while drinking wine. Love the labels, love the price point and look forward to tasting the Teachers Pet. I am highly intrigued by how successful this wine will be. I don’t know a teacher that doesn’t need a drink! My vote — estate or no estate, as long as it tastes great. Sniffy sniff…absolutely.

After 2 minutes I was ready to hate this episode, but as soon as I got off my high horse, I really enjoyed it. He’s just trying to make a living by selling value wine to the masses. He’s a little fish in a very big pond of giant wine companys. More power to him.
