Great episode Gary! Was amazed when I saw your tweet that you got “The Great One” on your show… So impressive that he got to know and learn about wine and didn’t just throw his name on the label. Gary, this was the show that got me away from lurking. I loved following Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers growing up in Edmonton. I mean I saw him and Messier around town for crying out loud! He’s just such a class act. The two of you made my new favourite episode. Congrats.

And Wayne, if you’re reading this, thanks for all the good times in Edmonton! They are some fond fond memories.

I’m speechless. I always liked Gretsky even before he came to the NYR.

Pittsburgh represent. As always, the show delivers with passion and ferver, and introduces novel labels that I wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. I like how the licorice theme has been present throughout the week. What really excites me about Gretzky visiting is not only his exceptional fluency in all things wine, but that his presence has the potential to turn an otherwise oblivious demographic on to the wiles of fermented grapes.

I will keep an eye out for these wines, they sound excellent and I can’t wait to try some.

The GREAT ONE, and a GREAT Show. Wow. I played hockey all my life, and as a homegrown Islander fan, I can certainly appreciate his greatness. Would love to try that Cab too. Wished you would have showed us a little more of his office. Very cool. -Gary

I find it funny how differently people are treated by the fans of this show. To be honest, Wayne only knew maybe 1 trivia fact about wine and not much else (really he let Gary do all the wine talk for him) and yet he gets treated with respect, whereas the Collegehumor folks had about the same inexperience with wine and were berated by a lot of WLTV fans. I think the biggest difference is that Gary didn’t really push him to give his opinions on all the wines like he did for the CH people, and Wayne didn’t have to be funny in front of a hostile audience. We all just bow to him because he’s a hockey god.

I’m actually really hesitant on watching all these episodes where he is with the wine owners. It seems like it would be extremely hard to be harsh on the wine with them right there. Has Gary ever commented on that? I mean I know Gary is a great guy and all, but when the biggest hockey legend of all time is telling you that you’re a cool guy, it’d be pretty hard to call his wine “just average”.

Anyways I like the episode despite all that, and it seems like you had a lot of fun making this episode. Here’s to more episodes with people who aren’t wine experts (I usually find them to be the most fun).

OMG Wayne Gretzky ON THIS SHOW I CAN’T BELIVE IT. I tried his Napa Valley Cab at one of the wine show in St Catherines over the summer and it was great.

The Great One and a GREAT episode. Even though you beat my Bruins in the finals I’ll forgive you if they can win the Cup this year. Really want to try the Cab and Icewine-Shiraz. Hope one of my distributors here in Mass can get it.

This was awesome!!! I’ll always love Wayne for what he did for the KINGS!!! He could have used some of that extra girth when he was playing though. Maybe he wouldn’t have been checked off the puck as much.

In reaction to the “…Gretzky doesn’t know wine…” comments: people, I’d have a lot more worries if someone actually called themselves a winemaker and had no idea. This is a living legend and definitely one of the best, if not, best ever hockey player which has ever lived!! It’s not like he’s pretending to be something he isn’t.

At least he was honest from the get-go about not really knowing much about wine and told the story about how this all came about. The fact that part of the sales go to a great cause should be admired.
