line of the day – ‘let’s call a spade a spade, this wine is boring…this wine is a boring ass wine’

Always love it when GV rips into a wine he doesn’t like and there’s no holding back here. The attack monster is back in the hissie!

Really good show. I’ve been into whites lately.
QOTD – just saw Benjamin Button and couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. It was really well done.

    QOTD: Red Beard and Ratcatcher

Great episode… “Picnic Bird” Chard… Instant Classic!

QOTD: Just rented “Taken” on VUDU… nice action flick that’s not too long… and since it deals with his kidnapped daughter, you may need to watch this to see the extremes you’ll go to if (God forbid) this were to happen to your Sunshine…

Nice to see you back in the THUNDER SADDLE my man, hope all is well with Lizzie and little Misha. Hope Sasha likes being a grandfather, too!

QOTD: Frost/Nixon was better than I thought it would be, via Netflix.

Finally saw “Bottle Shock”, and loved it. If you want something more quirky and slightly violent: “In Bruges”.

Delirious-1983-Eddie Murphy: Not only is it great to see Eddie at 22 trying to make it but the comments about “Reaganomics” and other social issues of that year brought back a lot of memories. Yay Netflix.

Why are you surprised that the Nobilo S.V. is not all the Wine Spectator says it is? Some of their so-called experts really leave me with questions about whether they have even tasted the wines they are rating and Harvey Steiman, in particular, has a really odd palate. I have almost never agreed with him on the quality of a wine. And since I live in Oregon and drink lots of Oregon and Washington wines, I get chances to compare my evaluations with his on a regular basis.

I should say, to be fair, that W.S. has other wine writers and tasters whom I think are very good at what they do.

    Movie – Slumdog.
    TV – Mad Men.
Best Wine Lately – 2001 Leonetti Cab.

Nice to see you back in the thunder seat Gary although I suspect Misha will be competing for a huge slice of your heart and passion for a long time.

    Hey Gary,
Glad to see you’re back in the saddle again. And of course, congrats once again on little Misha. She’s mad cute.
I watched Crackers on Hulu the other day and had a good laugh. Sean Penn in his third movie ever, with Don Sutherland, Wallace Shawn and a bunch of otehrs in a super corney 80’s crime caper. Think Oceans 11 set in 1980’s San Fran Mission district on a $5000 budget.

Wow…good question, coz the last time I actually sat in to complete a movie was actually a while back!
    Sorry, wrong dude to ask.

You could try ‘Bottle Shock’ (released last year, I think), another vino movie!

GV…I see that you’ve already figured out that having a child means going to fewer and fewer movies at an actual theater. You’re a quick study. The most recent movie I’ve rented at home was “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Great to see you back in the “studio”. The best movie I’ve seen in the past few months in Frost/Nixon.

“Picnic Bird Chardonnay” — LOL — You’re going to see that on a label next year, Gary. Mark my words! And it will sell a million, because everyone wants to take a bottle of buttered popcorn chardonnay out on to a hillside and have a picnic with it!!! Copyright the name NOW!

QOTD: You should see Defending Your Life if you like Albert Brooks. It is a sweet, quiet, funny, profound movie that will help you and Lizzie to bond even tighter.

  • Hey little Gar! It’s good to hear Mott’s voice again. You always seem more happy when you are in the office. Did you give Little Bear and Lil Mish a kiss for me yet?

QOTD: All of the videos from the Thunder Cruise. They bring back such awesome memories.

Great show. Nice to see you back in the saddle.
QOTD: First of all, I see that you are embracing what it means to have a newborn, more time at home. Rent all the movies you can for the first few weeks while little Mish is just eating and sleeping, b/c after this first few weeks, you will not be able to sit down for an entire movie ever again.
Fav movies, I will be doing a disservice to loopers (caddies) everywhere if I didn’t mention Caddyshack, but I rented Ironman a few weeks ago… It was great

(Ghosts do smell like coconut. What?!?)

Movie: My Kid Could Paint That (Art & wine have similar vibes, sometimes, methinks. Hype versus authenticity. Keeping it real. The roles of teachers, mentors, coaches. And, it’s got a cute kid and some neato art and art snobs it’s OK to laugh at.) There’s also a good one on Hulu about Alan Abel (one of the world’s great Con Men for Good) — http://www.hulu.com/watch/56337/abel-raises-cain. Concur on Man on Wire — good stuff.

About the Tolosa — gonna pass. I really hate oak in general, so my opinion wouldn’t be worth much.

  • With so many excellent wines out there in the world, why are these people still buying all these lousy “California style” chardonnays? I think soon it will be like looking back on 1980’s fashion and hairstyles . . . and saying, “how could I have knowingly done that to myself?” That’s my hope, anyway.

    QOTD: Revolutionary Road.

  • I tried few months ago (from WL) 2006 Tolosa Chard’ “No oak”, whole bottle. Review seem to be the same used for half-bottle you tried. Vote: didn’t order it again. I wouldn’t be as harsh as 75 points though I agree with your tasting points (as far as I can remember). My wife would likely agree with you on the score: she drank one glass and didn’t want to have anything to do with it anymore.

QOTD: Dersu Uzala, by Kurosawa, made in Russia. Rarely seen masterpiece (score 99). Available on DVD at many rentals.
