line of the day – ‘tight, like when you jump into a cold pool’

Always love the flip cam episodes. This one gets a 90 just for the egg-white nuggett of information alone.

  • Gary,
Congrats on baby Mischa, she’s gonna keep you on your toes. I’m a 74 baby myself so I really love it when you pull out the old school references like Saved by the Bell. I see you have the WWF old school wrestler figures around the bucket once in a while and Stinkor from He-Man a couple of shows back, awesome. I’ve only been watching for the past 15 shows or so and I love them. I hope to see some Transformers (old school ones of course) make an appearance on the show sometime. I just watched the Fallon clip and it was great. I know squat about wines but find your show to be so entertaining. Keep it up and Crush It every day. I pre-ordered your book too!

Noooo. Bitter Brion face! I find that many wines, like a lot of women I’ve met, are “young and unapproachable” and like wines, put them on the shelf, watch, and wait (they could go either way). Peace.

    QOTD: 2004 all quiet

Hand sharpeners are still the best for drawing pencils.

QOTD – Pacers- Pistons brawl. The curse that doomed a franchise and set in place a series of events that may lead to the demise of the Pacers from their home of 40 years or even from the league entirely. Bad times ahead for Indy if this plays out in its current direction.

When I hear “2004” it makes me think of muuuch better California Cab because most of the 2003s were dogs. Great show… and a belated congrats to you and your wife on your beautiful baby.

  • Swiftboating of John Kerry. Not sure why you would have opened this bad boy. Even in fair years La Mission tends to be tight and tannic. Also 2004 would be considered infantacide. The 1982 La Mission was wonderful but the 1986 is still quite tannic.

Been watching wltv since episode and this is one of my favorites. Why you ask? I love it when you get wine-nerdy GV and while you had good thunder you weren’t silly and a bonus…not one sports reference…is that a first??

That’s the problem with the 04 Bordeaux – some are very approachable now, some are still extremely tannic and tight.

I love the geek shows. I learn stuff every time, and I like the extra time and depth from just working on one wine. As you say, its a good format with the flip cam, especially. Very nice show, and it makes me very happy I didn’t spend $115 on a wine that I probably would have opened way too early.

The Fallon show was great. The pace of mainstream TV is always just a little too fast, though. It would be nice if you got a 20-minute segment on one of those, instead just a little snippet, so you don’t have to fly between the setups. Great setting for something like a cold/warm comparison, and the 8/80 was a cool idea, too. Well done.

2004: The only thing I associate specifically with that year was the very disappointing presidential election. That was a very important election in a lot of ways, even though in theory nothing changed.

  • Hey, Gary, GREAT job with Jimmy Fallon! You really brought the thunder and provided some good lessons on wine at the same time. I thought you let Fallon’s views see your true personality and had a good chemistry with him. You should be a regular on that show! Kudos!

QOTD: 2004 – I’m reminded that it’s the birth year of my twin girls, so it’s a great year for me regardless of the wine.

I like the in-depth approach – focusing on one wine and really geeking it up.

  • I liked the single wine format, nice way to get into the nitty gritty details. That egg white factoid freaked me out a bit… never heard of that! Would be neat to see you come back 4+ hours later and see if it softened up at all.

QOTD: makes me think of the 2004 Chateau Haut Brisson (from episode 414)… that was yummy!

QOTD: I think 2004 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett; Oh my God what a lovely wine! I still have 2 bottles left, but will I be able to wait till 2019 to drink them? Probably not! Gary, please can I ask that you do another German Riesling show soon, these wines are majestic but they need plugging! Tom, Plymouth UK.

those pencil sharpeners are still kicking with the youngsters. 2004 = someone stole munch’s scream and i went to memphis and ate ribs.

good show, like the info and more in-depthnessosity.

I just feel like after seeing you read off that negative comment I should say that this show has done nothing but help me understand wine (which I can’t even drink yet! Have a few months to go. That just shows how good of a show you give us). Seeing your dedication to this show and un-faltering energy some how gives me a little more energy with a can-do attitude during the day. : )

Also.. I’m so sad I couldn’t make the wine signing.. I’m in Eastern PA but not quite of age, mixed with no money kept me back for now. I will undoubtedly come purchase my first bottle of wine (legally : O ) from the Wine Library, though.

    Great show as always!

    Hi,
The link of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon says: ”For now, Hulu is a U.S. service only”. we’re ur huge fans from Turkey and this is so ridiculous.

    warm regards

To get back to the question of the day: I think this is one of the most underestimated vintages in this decade.

What I had in the glas so far – Leoville Barton, Sociando Mallet, Cos d’Estournel, Mouton, Giscours and also on the right side e.g. Conseillante and many other “small wines” – they all show a classic Bordeaux characteristic with great aromatic spectrum, aging potential and all this at moderate alcohol levels.

Of course today not all of them are approachable. Some of them are extremely tannic and tight but others are already great to drink. For example Sociando and even Barton (whitch usualy takes for 2 decades to become smooth) are perfect to be opened today and will keep momentum for 15-20 years+

Drink most of the 2003 now while waiting for the 2004 surprises that will come – for sure.

Gary this would have been a good time to put the Vinturi to the test. I’m still waiting for you to do that show.
