Always love the flip cam episodes. This one gets a 90 just for the egg-white nuggett of information alone.

Enoyed the new format…nice change of pace for when you’re on the road, at home, etc. The “classic” format is still my favorite though, especially for comparing wines!

For this format, it’d be good to also give more general details about the wine, its region, etc. for beginners. Not everyone may know about left and right bank, the grapes used in Bordeaux wines, etc. For instance, I wouldn’t know comparable basic facts about a Portuguese wine, and this format presents a great opportunity for some “basic education” of that nature!

QOTD: The presidential election…for better or for worse!

  • Really enjoy when you geek it up about the wines.. I agree that 2004 might be slow coming around the corner but may show to be great wines down the road.
QOTD: won Rookie of the year at my job as a field rep.. I was passionate, and driven. I need to find some of that again.

I really like your change of focusing on one wine so as to “nerd it up.” It allows us to see a more in dept view of how you taste, and any wine worth while should get it’s own show. The only thing though, is if a wine fails, that poor wine will be slammed.

Question: adding eggs into the wine, how do they keep it from salmonella? Does the alcohol kill all that?

  • Haven’t visited in a while. Been crushing it on my own book, second edition of something I wrote 9 years ago. Good show. I think I like the 1 wine format.

2004: First thought, immediately, Boston Red Sox breaking the 86 year old drought by winning the World Series.

    Kevin.

  • Haha, late night show was awesome. Corkers… heh.

QOTD: Right when I heard 2004 I cringed. It took me a few seconds to figure out why, but then the words Ohio and “W, Still the President” flashed through my mind. Seems like so long ago though doesn’t it?

Love the wine geek passion! I’m curious what you think of Vinturi, and if you put the La Mission through one to make it approachable for dinner. I’ve had similar experiences with 04 Bordeaux. But when I think of 04, I think of Philly, and finishing grad school.
The world was a very different place then, and thankfully I’ve learned and adapted along the way. Its a 180 from where I expected, but a place the feels natural and right. Did you ever imagine back in 04 that you’d be doing all the multimedia work that you’ve developed over the past few years with WLTV?

For some reason the only thing remarkable that I remember from 2004 was John Kerry vs. George W. Bush. 🙁

You rock Gary. Hope the family is well.

  • Hey Gary,

Great show. The lack of a bucket shows respect, no doubt about it. I found this show in the first place because @hautbrion retweeted it!

As it happens, I have tasted the 2004 MHB and although they recommend a drinking window of 2010-2020, one would definitely be better off aiming for the middle of that window, 2015. That means we agree on at least one thing. Keep the flame burning, my man!

I think you mae a slight error early on in the show when you casually mentioned there is no association with Chateau Huat Brion. In reality, the folks (Domaines Clarence Dillon) who own Chateau Haut Brion bought LMHB in 1983. Ambassador Dillon (USA and NJ) and his descendants have owned HB since 1935.
    Congrats on the the baby!

Nice ep. I definitely enjoy the most episodes like this where I get to learn new things about premium wines that I rarely see in shops. The thing about guests is, eventhough you probably like to have company there they don’t always add anything to the episode from the viewer’s point of view (while of course it is different strokes for different folks…).

QOTD: The US’ young olympics basketball team, its poor performance and Lebron’s limited minutes.

Just started wathching the show a couple of weeks ago. Im pretty new to wine. I started trying to learn more about it a couple of months ago this show has been a great educational tool for me. I even did a speech in my public speeking class on how wine is made, so that i can learn more. Eventually im planning on joining your wine club. For now Ive been trying a different bottle or so every week. Me and the wife had a 2006 Montevista barbera last night it had a pretty complex smell but it didnt transfer over to the taste. You should do a show of great wines for under 20. If its been done sorry i missed it but 600 past episodes is alot to catch up with. Thanks for the non snobbish opinions

    Peace

    Hi GV,

Being a wine enthusiast, and having La Mission as a wish list wine, I have to disagree with you, very respectfully as a big fan.
I think there is a very clear connection between the two Haut-Brion:

    1) They are neighbors at Pessac-Léognan, Graves. So close that in fact parcels of lands from the two properties intermingled.
    2) They are longtime rivals.
    3) They since 1983 have been owned by the same company the Domaine Clarence Dillon that owns Chateau Haut-Brion since 1935. Both are now in the skillful hands of Jean-Philippe Delmas.

    Congrats again on baby Misha!
    Best wishes,

    Mauricio Fernandes.

  • Thanks Gary I liked the single bottle focused effort and education. Do you have any “affordable” reccomendations for 2004 Bordeaux for the Vaynernation?

QOTD: HAHA to quote Sinatra “It was a very good year”, but the “best was/is yet to come”, and still is….

Greetings from Ireland. Congrats on your little family addition. Only tuned in to the thunder show recently. I thought the wine industry was full of stuffed shirts and you have blown their cover. People tell me I am nuts about wine but compared to you I am very sane. Keep up the good work. Cheers Garry!

  • Gary,
Congrats on baby Mischa, she’s gonna keep you on your toes. I’m a 74 baby myself so I really love it when you pull out the old school references like Saved by the Bell. I see you have the WWF old school wrestler figures around the bucket once in a while and Stinkor from He-Man a couple of shows back, awesome. I’ve only been watching for the past 15 shows or so and I love them. I hope to see some Transformers (old school ones of course) make an appearance on the show sometime. I just watched the Fallon clip and it was great. I know squat about wines but find your show to be so entertaining. Keep it up and Crush It every day. I pre-ordered your book too!
