line of the day – ‘big and bright…if you like…brig fruit’

Old school episode with no messing. Just the smell, and the taste of several wines. I think GV would describe this effort as ‘focussed’.

  • Nice show though I have been to COSTCO once and don’t plan on going back. Too big, too busy and I feel like a gypsy at a carnival. I will try and find the CH #100.

SOTD: From this past week, we have come to realize that life is much too short. Given that, if I could have a wine and dinner with anyone living or deceased (family excluded) it would have to be Thomas Jefferson. “Make every pitch as though it were your last.”

    P.S. Where’s the address link?

It’s a comparison/metaphor. Women rate men also. If you had a choice, which most of us don’t, you could date a very nice, good looking, smart and balanced man on a Thursday night with pizza. You could also be stuck dating a boring, unkempt, cheap bastard on a Saturday night. That’s the difference between a great wine and a so so wine. In Garys demented reality. Or something like that.

  • John Farrin

SOTD: When I was getting ready to make my end of the month order to take one last advantage of the free shipping I got to thinking about WL marketing. If your computer tracking system allows why not maximize sales by making each individual Vayniac an unpaid WL salesman. If you’re able to assign individual free shipping codes and then allow the indivual Vayniac’s (or WL customers) to hand out those codes to friends, family and acquaintances and, further, to track all the sales using that unique code then you could run a Wine Library’s Greatest Salesman contest. I think that most of us Vayniacs tell our inner circle about the FS but how exponentially would sales expand if you made it competitive.

Representing the CKC, I don’t have a tv and love watching online when I have the free time. I grew up drinking wine with my parents, and so it’s great to see different varietals on your show that aren’t part of my parent’s normal repertoire. I tried my first wine from Portugal (2004 Azamor), brought it home, and my stubborn, German dad loved it! Thank you for providing such an accessible resource for everyone to peruse; watching always gets me excited about wine!

    Gary,

Please let me know how you enjoyed the tea book I recommended. It should do a lot for you.

However, if you are looking mainly for a pocket sized reference book with a brief history of tea and tea culture, presentations of tea in white glasses to show color, steeping times, and so on, then “The Tea Companion: A Connoisseur’s Guide” by Jane Pettigrew ISBN: 0-7624-2150-9 is for you.

Good luck and I hope all is well with you beautiful daughter Misha.

Gary: I’m hoping for a high quality/low(er) price sparkling wine episode. By the by, Mr. C. Mott is already the man, since he emailed me back last week after I made a comment about the mike switch.

Here’s to another (nearly) 700 episodes ….. remember, we heard what you promised your father! 😉

Hi gary i’ve been watching your show for the last year… and i gotta say I LOVE IT. It helped me quite a bit when i was working at a wine restaurant and didn’t have time to taste all the bottles on our list (due to time and money) but i very easily was able to look up almost all of our wine list and hear what you had to say about it. pretty cool

sotd: i heard you refer to a wine as “bullish” more than once in the last week or two. i would love to hear what you’ve been investing in!

GV and CM, Watch out playing copyrighted music on the show from the radio. They have to pay rights, and so will you. They have gotten very anal retentive about this sort of thing. Everyone is trying to squeeze the last dime out of infringement.

And Kell, you come across as a hater, not a lover. Honey (or wine), not vinegar.

Hey Gary how about a home brew episode. Maybe people can send you their finest and get your opinion. Could be interesting. Make the intern test it.

Gary, just heard about the M. Jackson autopsy, apparently he died of food poisoning from eating a 10 yr. old weenie(ba-dump!). My Costco smackdown was between a Wine and Spirits 92pt. 2006 Cambria Pinot for $16 and the Aussie 08 Innocent Bystander Pinot at $14(06,07 90pts. Steiman). The Aussie won and was amazingly bright, fresh and tasted like real Pinot with a little air and it has become one of my summer go to wines. I want to hook you up with a box of Italia Muscat table grapes(nearly extinct) that my family produces, you will flip at the flavor intensity, look for it sometime in Sept. Keep up the good work.

Love the direction the show is going in and you have certainly contributed to the expansion of our wine palatte. Ran into a distributer in a local foods store and had a really engaging chat- in part due to the have no fear and give no apologies for drinking the wine you want attitude you’re putting out there. My response to the statement of the day? Thank you.

Statement OTD: Gary, I enjoy your positive, upbeat personality–continue to go out of the box, have fun with the show–great sense of humor.

Was wondering what liquor store Sasha began working at when you first emigrated to the U.S. Baumel’s, Clark Circle, or Rotundo’s ??

    Gary goes generic!

Life is a joke, unfortunately, not many people have a sense of humour…

Comment of the day: I love vinho verde on a hot summer day!

    Love y’all!

    Gary,

Long time lurker first time commenter. Thanks for taking my comment. If I could have my perfect balance of Wine Library TV Episodes it would be this.

    1-2 Guests a week
    1 single wine education show
    1 brown bag episode
    1-2 4-6 bottle tasting episode

Congrats on the book deal and the little one.

    Keep drinking,
    Scott

I see this “show” as a form of entertainment and learning – seems some people have way too much personally invested – “it’s a show”….

QOTD – enjoy the mix of shows – with guests – without guests – family – friends – one wine – five wines – short – long – please avoid a set pattern – like the diversity….

Gary: Intersting show. Will look for the lot 100 cab at my costco… love that place. But the father’s day with your dad was a recent favorite episode. that show rocked. love the love you showed for your dad.

Question for you is: I’m NJ guy who works at P&G in marketing. In modesty, I have the chops. But truth be tols I have learned tons just following you for the past 6-12 months (about wine, biz amd attitude). I want to pay back in some way. How can I help with the upcoming book launch, VM (leora’s a doll…connected on twitter) or anything else. Will you be coming to Cincy for the tour?

    Gary –
since it’s an open forum, here we go:
    >belated congrat’s on your lovely daughter
    >nice job keeping an open mind and mixing up your style of show (just as we need to keep an open mind about the wines we drink)
    >Lot 100 looks like it is only available direct from the winery according to the online search sites but 2,000 cases should be enough that it will start to appear at a store near me
    >WS this month had an interesting recap of results from a recent survey – 67% of women said they drink wine to relax at the end of the day – not because it tastes good or because of health benefits
    >Evolution #9 is great by the poolside
    >Free shipping is “da boss”
    >People take you way to serious – good thing you don’t
    >Football season is just around the corner!

Just some random thoughts inspired by the SOTD…..
