Really interesting on location episode. The main point when discussing the wine was that overoaked wines hide most of the secondary flavours and can easily be replicated cheaply. I totally agree!

Winery Collective in San Francisco is the favorite de jour. 15-20 boutique California wineries poured at one shop in the city

  • They tried that sort of thing in Napa, but it didn’t last. Could have been the location though, not the concept that was to blame.

That table was great! I think its brilliant, gives people something to play with while they’re drinking.

QOTD: Willis Wine Bar in Santa Rosa, CA. Feels like an old Bordelo (not that I would know)

Vary vary cool wine bar. Would like see one in LA. I don’t have a favorite wine bar, maybe my own house is the best I can think of right now.

Very good show. Might have to pop into CLO one of these nights. Hope they appreciate the exposure GV gave them.

qotd: forget the name, but there’s a nice place on Amsterdam Ave in the 80’s.

  • My favorite wine bar is The Winery at the Red Bar in Tallahassee, FL. It’s a great atmosphere, and you see *everyone* there for live jazz on Friday nights! Used to be super affordable ($5/glass house wines, which are excellent), but the price point has gone up a little. Still a really enjoyable place. I live in Orlando now and miss it!

I started watching just after this went up, and finally after several phone calls, supper, and another phone call I get to finish! Jeez!
Very cool place, great concept! I wonder what the noise level is like once it’s open, considering the extraneous noise and echo during the taping.
QOTD: None available to have a favorite 🙁 , not within easy travel distance, at any rate.

Clo sounds pretty cool, I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in the city. While not a wine bar per se, my favorite place to drink wine at the moment is Sel de la Terre in Boston, they have a great, mostly old-world list with a good amount of wines by the glass and it changes pretty frequently, always one or two outside the box styles, I was drinking this great Vinsobres for awhile, and right now I think they have 4 different dry roses by the glass. Also, I was at this place in Chicago called Eno (I think they have a few other locations) that’s all about wine, cheese, and chocolate, and they have a bunch of different flights of all 3, which I think is a pretty cool concept.

That was a really cool looking place!

QOTD: Unfortunately there aren’t any wine bars in my neck of the woods. Really cool one up in Santa Fe, NM though on the plaza called La Casa Sena, coupled with a pretty outstanding wine shop, it’s a kickass place to be.

    Gary,

Nice episode. Clo seems like a neat concept and definetly has a wide selection by the glass, but I can’t ever see myself going there. The room seemed kind of austere and I couldn’t help but think it looked more like a labratory than a wine bar. I don’t want to knock the place, everyone seemed friendly and the location is great, but I prefer a more personal experience where you can sit down, have a conversation and listen to music. That’s just my taste, but props to Clo for mixing it up and trying something new.

QotD – Grovewood Wine Bar, North Collinwood,Cleveland. http://www.rovewoodtavern.com.

and La Cave du Vin, Cleveland Heights. http://www.lacaveduvin.com. They just got Duvel Green on tap, today! Yeah!

  • Hey Gary

    Thanks for the show.

QOTD: Not too sure about my favourite wine bar. To be honest the choices in HK are pretty poor – either very average quaility wines or way overpriced. If I had to pick though I’d say the tasting room at Watson’s wine cellar that is a pretty cool concept.

    Cheers

GV, An absolutely killer show. I love it when you bring a new twist for the viewers, well done. I go to a wine bar in Saratoga, NY called The Wine Bar, ha ha, no really that is what it is called. BTW I hope we can roll with a get together at the track this summer. Great show.

    Hey Gary,
Cool Wine bar. We like the concept.
In Pittsburgh we have several wine bars, but we would say our favorite is in the Southside of Pittsburgh called Ibiza. We would love for you to come to PA and we will treat you to a visit at Ibiza! Go STEELERS and PENGUINS!!

  • QOTD, gotta be honest, as a relative newcomer to the wine world, i find wine bars a bit condescending. after a few too many bad experiences with waiters looking at me like something they scraped off their shoe, I’ve stopped going.

  • I LOVE technology!! That table is completely AWESOME! Great road show

QOTD~ Here in Las Vegas they have very cool wine bar at Green Valley Ranch that resembles very close to the one in your show today. Pay by the ounce type deal with Technology infused.

Sweet looking place with a great concept and use of technology. Curiously enough, how are the wines dispensed? Straight from the bottle in the display or is there a big pot at the back. And are the wines fresh from the bottle or have been breathing for a while?

QOTD: In Singapore, Wine Company does a pretty good job with ambience and selection with about 50% from South Africa. Wine Connection is pretty good too ‘cos they extend into the lower price range which is good for a CKC like me.

I’ve been to Clo, and it is a total rip-off!! You said that the prices looked reasonable, and I thought the same thing when I first went there. $19 a glass seems ok for a full glass. But they only give you a puny 4 ounce pour. That is only 2/3 of a glass!! (A normal glass of wine is 6 ounces). Clo is made for tourists who buy one glass, get shocked by the price, run out of there, and never go back. This place is not made for repeat business. It is made for suckers who stumble upon this place while shopping on vacation.

QOTD: I went to Bar Boulud yesterday, and it was fantastic. That is my new favorite wine bar.
