lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

i know it’s airen, but can I be the first to say that grenache is the most widely-planted red grape?

  • Technically wouldn’t that be Thompson seedless grapes? You didn’t say wine grape though I suppose you could make wine from Thompsons.

[QOTD]: Vila Regia, Duoro, 2004. A cheap, simple, but decent red. I tried it because you are high on Duoro. Thanks! I’d rate it about 85.

Haven’t seen the show yet but, after seeing the lineup I just want to say: THAT’S what I’m talking about! A good blind representation of a varietal and terroir. This format should be done more often. Thanks in advance.

yeah, varietal blind show! let’s watch, then I come back again…

QOTD: I was camping with a bunch of winemakers, so there were quite a few, starting with breakfast chardonnay (Boheme stunned me), mid-day merlots, and a big blind syrah tasting. Martinelli’s Hop Camp Syrah easily won the day out of 7 California Syrahs, and showed great balance and terroir, 91+ in my notes. A surprise for me, since I am very old world when ti comes to Syrah, although Mendocino has been fascinating me recently.

Great show, although i’d like to see the blind tastings limited to 4 wines to keep the episode shorter.

  • QOTD side: 13

QOTD: I popped open two wines from WL this weekend, both on the low end price-wise looking for some QPR (and both with barbecue). The first, Quiteria Loma Gorda 2006 I was pretty unimpressed with, just didn’t grab me at all, even for $11. I’d say 80 points. The second, at $5 blew me away for QPR, a solid 86 for the Berco Do Infante Estremadura Reserva 2007. I just bought 3 more today. Loving Portugal.

  • Happy Birthday little sister…

#1 Planted Grape: Sangio or Merlot maybe???

QOTD: No wine this weekend unfortunately. I can’t remeber the last weekend that I didn’t at least have a glass. I had Bud Light this weekend at the Coldplay concert though. I’d give it an 82+… QPR = shit though. They were $9/beer, can’t you buy a case of that domestic crap for $9? 🙂 But, hey, I’m the idiot for buying two.

  • This is in response to the last comment you read today. In the past I’ve only left a few comments, but when i heard what you read, I felt I had to say something. First, I believe that if you don’t like something, you have the right to go to another website, or for that matter, not waste your precious time typing that ridiculous comment you sent. I understand constructive criticism, but basing someones passion on their race explains to anyone who listened to that comment how ignorant you really are, It’s comforting that Gary hasn’t allowed for the past, over conservative, wine industry to put him into a box, his passion is what makes him human and not a wine snob. Maybe you should find your passion and try to put it out there for people to judge. Everyones a critic! Thanks for always being a unique and passionate voice and face behind the wine industry. Wine is great because it is forced to keep it real, it can’t lie once it’s on your palate, as long as you keep it real, like you always have, I’ll keep watching man………

  • Mojave Joe

    Great show, Boris. 🙂
This weekend: Zaca Mesa Viognier (don’t remember vintage). 86 points. Too much vic-vapo-rub action (play?)

SQOTD: 4 (I’m in Music) Obviously not using Google, the Concord grape for all that Welch’s Grape Jelly.

Don’t listen to that idiot Diken or whatever his name is. He’s a bunch of hot air. Probably wanted to see if you would read the comment on the show.

Weekend wines. Brought some wine to an outdoor party. The clear winner was Jed Steele’s Shooting Star Aligote from Columbia Valley. I’d score it 90+ points.

I think you’re not acting Russian enough 😉

26:40 “Like drinking melted wood with lemons squeezed in there…” Classic

WINE this weekend. Primitivo 2006 (Amano) – give it an 84. That’s with an amateur wine scoring handicap of 10.
