lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

Love the blind tastings Gary! You ought to come up with some variations on it…like single blind, where you match decanted wines to the regions or bottles or whatever…or a guess the grape or vintage contest with some of the other WL nerds, that’d be a blast. BTW I caught 2 plays after you put the moritorium on play…3 if you count “did I just say play”

    QOTD: 42

QOTD part Deux: I had kindof a novelty wine, Fat Bastard Pinot Noir…it’s a French play (haha) where they left the grapes on the lees longer. It wasn’t bad, and worth the 10 bucks or so that I paid for it. I’d give it a strong 86. 87 maybe if I were in a really good mood.

Well I won’t be the first comment to get this right, but you will be pleased to hear how I know it. The most planted wine grape is Grenache, or Garnacha. I know this because you said so. I remember it from the wine tasting you did with chocolate (must’ve been Valentine’s day), and you were tasting a Marquis Philip Grenache from Australia. This stands out in memory because of how gross you judged that wine. Hilarious, and it taught me a bit of trivia as well. So I got the answer without Google, not the first, but perhaps the first who can credit you with the answer.

Great show! Besides the passion my favorite thing about this show is the attitude that there are no “wrong” answers. So many people I’ve met at tastings are intimidated, afraid to like a wine others think is bad.

QOTD: 2000 Barolo, Bric del Fiasc, Paolo Scavino. Outstanding. I’m just amazed how the good Barolos can transition from floral tones with bright, raspberry fruit to a lasting, smoky finish. I don’t have my tasting notes at hand but as I recall I’d go 93+.

And my favorite number is also 5. I grew up in St. Louis and am a die hard Cardinal fan; ’nuff said. How ’bout a show tomorrow on all-star summer wines in honor of the game in StL? I’m trying to find the perfect wine to pair with an NL win!!

Like the B.B. shows on an occasional basis.

    QOTD #1: 3

QOTD #2: A 2007 Clone 5 pinot that I surprisingly would only give an 83. I have really liked both the 2005 & 6 versions (90+) and, judging on harvest reports, was really looking forward to the 07. Talking about individual palates, my daughter liked the 07 the best of the three vintages so…..

Fantastic show. I love the blind tastings.
QOTD: Opened the B. Shifrin Zinfandel. Thought I was drinking gasoline it was so hot it almost tore off my face. I little better served slightly chilled the next day, but definitely not my cup of tea. For my palate, it’s in the low 70’s. I think the only Zins that make me happy these days are made in the style like Ridge does. Or Primitivo.

Well, you can’t control other people’s bad manners (and weird assumptions) so
let that nasty comment go. Stay Gary!
qotd: I think it was called Raspail (?) or something like that. Good! I really enjoyed it.

    GARY!!!
Happy Monday…and Happy 30th Birthday Liz!

I think the critique of you being too aggressive, must have come from someone who has had prior bad experiences with aggression. -so much so, that he may be too jaded to decipher the difference between enthusiam, energy & passion in front of a wanting audience – and that of a nuisance..someone who inappropriately is loud, and aggressive…
    …just sayn…

QOTD: Pax, Syrah, Nelleson 2006. 94pts!
    🙂

Keep doing what you do Gary, in the way you do it.
    Love you.

  • Grenache is the most widely planted grape. I don’t need no stinking google.

Total guess but I think it’s either Merlot or Grenache. Probably wrong on both but if I had to pick one I’ll say Grenache. You should give a prize for those who come close because we didn’t use Google. I hope I’m right though.

I’ll say Grenache! Yes it’s my final answer.

I wouldn’t mind if the brown paper bags made an appearance everyday.

QOTD: 2008 Abeja Viognier – 91+ points. Really, really good.

  • No favorite number. I remember a previous episode where you said Grenach was the most widely planted grape. I opened an Elyse Rhone varietal red and white and we had a taste off with a Cote d Rhone and a Condrieu. Condrieu won hands down.

  • Kellen

not sure what my favourite number is anymore—used 4, 5 or 7.

just finished a bottle of “Castillo de Almansa Reserva 2004”–We did not really like it–It had some good sourness to it, but finished with a really bitter and unpleasant taste (though with dark chocolate it toned it down a little)

  • Arién, Spain’s and world’s most planted grape by acreage. It leads in most acres because the vine needs lot of space. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have more vines planted, but they don’t need as much space so trail in acres. Sultana/Thompson Seedless is the most planted table grape.

  • Shannon

um, that comment from Gidik or whatever is really offensive to me and i am not in any way russian. it sounds like they just don’t like russians or their russian boyfriend cheated on them. either way they should take their russian-hating somewhere else.

    Gary,
Loved the show!!!! I fished a couple of bass tournaments this past weekend so no wine but my fav. number is 7. I also think the paper bag is a great idea for shows and customers. It is fun and exciting to take off the bag and see not only what you have drank but to expand your tastes as well. I think it has a nice PLAY on the show.
