lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

Love the brown bags. You’re right, fascinating show on so many levels.

QOTD: 2002 Stemelt Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State, very nice wine 88-89.

Love the brown bags!!! The best number is 3, very stable, and it’s a prime number.

I drank a bottle of red wine that I dont even GV has even tried. Lemberger from Kiona Vineyards in the Red Mountain Appelation of Washington State. Lemberger is an “Old World grape variety” that is grown by family friends from my youth. Check them out!

Gary, put this show over on the right as one of the best, because it blows away every perception of price, scores, geography, etc that there is about wine.

When was the last time you did 7 wines? I loved it. I also love the anticipation I get every time you start pulling the brown bags off. Your reaction to some of the wines was priceless. Interesting to note that the Mount Eden was also 93 pts Spectator, and your score was ~20 points lower than anyone on Cellartracker. For the record, though, I think I’m with you when it comes do a dislike of over-oaked wines & a love of acid.

QOTD1: 13 has always been lucky for me
QOTD2: 2006 Big Tattoo Wines Syrah/Cabernet from Chile- I gave it an 88, but I probably tacked on an extra point or two b/c they donate proceeds from each bottle to breast cancer.

Speaking of which, I saw the pink ribbon on the Dunham too- any details on that? Loved their label.

Love the return of the brown paper bags. Fun show. Huge surprise to see the high price wines score so low. I haven’t seen all the episodes, but I notice a consistent fear of Ian pulling a fast one and have yet to see it happen. Either Ian is a notorious office prankster or you are a bit paranoid.
    QOTD: 3
QOTD2: I had an amazing Albarino from Rias Baixas by Burgans, 90pts. I wish I was drinking it now

    oh really?

  • Racism is not funny! I dont like the letter you read, the racist rant of some coward who hides behind his email. Maybe he could post his email here for us all to discuss how this behavior hurts the world. He didnt deserve the attention. Some people are so desperate for attention, they would rather have negative attention then none at all. He deserved none at all, which is probably all he usually gets. You go Gary, people like that are jealous!

Dude, you crushed it! Totally dissed the top two! Definitely the most engaging WLT I’ve ever seen.

Answers: 8, and (speaking of Argentina) Yellow + Blue 2008 Malbec San Juan, I’d score it 87 points easy.

Easily beats Y+B’s 2007 Malbec Mendoza. Yellow and Blue’s got a good thing going — this year, they introduced a 2008 Torrontes (Cafayate) and a 2008 Rose (Alicante), all from organically-grown grapes.

Maybe it’s time for a serious look at some of the good wines that come in boxes these days! Boxes in brown paper bags?

  • Sent Liz a Happy Birthday email as requested. Great show — as always. Liked the way you handled the negative comment about being too Russian. Passion is usually infectious and motivating but some in this world do everything to stay negative. Keep rockin’ Gary.

That was a lot of fun and worth the long show. Glad that I am not the only one to disagree with wine critics. QOTD – I had a 2002 priorat that was difficult to open, but tasted great. I would give it a 90+ rating. Also had a 2006 California riesling that was OK – 85 points. Blind tastings are fun to watch. Thanks

Love the brown bags but maybe you should have done a blind tasting on only oaked or unoaked chardonnary.

QOTD: 2006 Le Bel Enfant VDP (100% Hairy Grenache, Languedoc Rousillon) – 86/87 points, good VDP but the alcohol got away a little on the nose.

one more favorite show! nice to see the gap between parker’s score and yours, made me laugh loud!
now look, you have your own way of being, and the only thing I have to say now about the Russian comment is the same that you’ve been telling us to do since I’ve been watching the show: trust your own way of being! Nothing would stop me from watchin the show everyday, but surely it would be much more boring if you were just a guy sitting on a table and talking about wine without any passion…

    fav number: 9
wine of the day: 07 Argento Shiraz from Argentina – Accessible wine in Brazil’s retailers, but too overoaked, with little hints of dark fruits, nothing special about it. Would give it a 85

    cheers from BRA!!

Forget Didic, we all know where his head is.
Great show. Need more blind testing.
QOTD: Villa Maria SB, about 87 but QPR is very good. Nice refreshing on a warm New England weekend.

I love the blind tastings Gary, and tonight’s show reveals why.
I’ll take your “68” to Parkers “whatever” any day.

    QOTD #1 22
#2 Friday Cooks Brute Sparkling 87
Saturday Minage de Tois – Red 89

  • First of all, whoever wrote about Russians doesn’t know enough sober Russians. With a last name like Smith, what the h*** do I know, right? Seminoff, maiden name and we like people to make their yes, yes and their no, no and we give it straight up the way we expect it to be given to us. It lacks the subtlety perhaps of British, or other European cultures but at least you know what we are thinking, sober or not.

Secondly, “nuts in my mouth are very exciting,” that was hilarious!!! I couldn’t pay attention to the wine as a result of that comment.

QOTD: 7, I know boring but I got stuck on it when for my seventh birthday, I had three birthday parties and decided it really was a lucky number.

QOTD #2: Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Told a friend to bring a New Zealand SV because she asked for guidance and she brought this one because it was the prettiest chilled bottle she could find at the store. 🙂 Liked it though. Just found out the SF Chronicle gave it some props for being a good inexpensive white.

props for calling a spade a spade. but, based on your color descriptions, i really think you need to drink more water. for not being a drunkard, you seem to be rather dehydrated…

SQOTD: 8. i like the symmetry. no numerology behind it.

QOTD: did not drink any wine. did drink sobieski. i scored it an 86. excellent value.

had a don david michel torino cab sauv from argentina which was quite well balanced and good in complexity. 17$ cad. i’d say 88+ point wine. had the syrah as well and was not as pleased, probably an 84 pointer. i think number 19 is good. i used to love the number 5, until the human pylon dana murzyn sported the number on the canucks back in the early 90’s.

I love how your ‘play’ abstinence lasted about 10 seconds and the fast that you only caught it about three or four plays later made it even better. 🙂

Not much for the whites but I heart the blind tastings. The South African caught my fancy for some reason. Have to see if I can track it down.

QOTD1: I would have to go with 13. It is my underdog play. Misunderstood and considered bad luck today but historically was actually considered lucky.

QOTD2: I only do one wine at a time so I am still working my way though my woot purchase. So it was the Woot Cellars 2008 Triacipedis (36% White Riesling (Russian River Valley), 32% Sauvignon Blanc (Central Coast), and 32% Chardonnay (Central Coast)). Taking into account that whites are not my favorite it is a solid wine. Not the best I’ve had but FAR from the worst. Mid 80’s Lets call it 84+.

  • ScottEJ

Fantastic show. I’ve been off Chardonay for a while, but now my interest has been peaked. Thanks.

Also, please don’t feel you need to apologize for you handle your own show. You’re just fine and if anybody doesn’t like how it’s run, they can go elsewhere. The person who you read the comment from was speaking in generalizations and was insulting. You and your show are excellent.

QOTD: Like my wine preferences there’s a bunch. But, if I were to name some: 34 for Walter *Sweetness* Payton, 23 for M. Jeffrey Jordan & Ryno Sandberg, and yes 7….which was my number all thru High School baseball.

QOTD: My highest rated wine this past weekend: ’05 Davis Bynum Pinot Noir. Very good, bigger style, decently priced for a RRV Pinot.

  • clintster

i had the spanish quarter 2006 55% cabernat sauvignon-45% tempranillo form spain i would give it 89+ points it was good and at a great price like 10 bills you cant beat it
