lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Awful episode (despite my earlier note). That you might not consider you tasted off bottles is astonishing to me. And without food? Bizarre. That the Mount Eden was so poorly received should have raised a red flag. Strange show.

Great, great show. Didn’t you promise weekly brown bag shows a few months ago? Time to reissue that promise.

    QOTD1: 22

QOTD2: Exopto Cellars Big Bang Rioja, 2006. I’d give it a 89. Was great with grilled flank steak and some Latin sides.

Quick correction GV, it was a 2004 Boscarelli Montepulciano, not a 2005, that I had this weekend. Cheers!

simply put the blind tastings rule. every time you do one there is a big surprise. keep up the good work Gary.

  • I had a $12 Herman J. Wiemer Frost Cuvee… 50% Riesling, 25% Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, 25% Gewurztraminer. N absolute steal!

  • Thanks Gary

Great show, I really enjoyed it. Also interesting to note your comment on the bottle of ‘wine number 7’. I’ve noticed that South American wines always seem to have huge bottles; adds an element of class, but perhaps not so g$ood for the carbon footprint.

QOTD: Drank a Rosemount Red at a friends place – 84pts and nothign special.

this was a really interesting episode. i was glad to see you stand your ground and disagree with parker when need be.

qotd: 2007 dr. frank finger lakes gewurztraminer. i think it’s 87 points spectator, and i would probably go 88, though it’s still not that great. a wine that can go 3/4 of the way great, and then just lose it on the midpallate.

  • Argentina on top… wow, fantastic.

    Q1: 3
Q2: My weekend wine, another argentinian, mine from Patagonia:
Humberto Canale Estate Pinot Noir 2007 85+ points, really nice wine. I would love if you would try it on the show, see how you like it.

I loved this episode, fantastic results, wonderful wine reviews. Thanks for sharing it.

From a fan in Colombia, all my best.

OMG! Epic episode! Given your description of the South African wine I was also convinced that it was burgundy (and maybe an 04 Mersault?). The blind tasting episodes are great.

QOTD: Gave the 2000 Roc de Candale St. Emilion Grand Cru an “86” on Cellar Tracker. Classic Merlot flavors, but not that interesting.
SQOTD: 12. Wine, eggs and beer all come in delightful packages of 12. I also enjoyed the 6th grade in 1992. I had some wicked Kris Kros-esq shorts.

Isn’t the most popular planted grape Grenache? That’s what the guy at Epiphany Cellars in Santa Barbara told me, at least.

Love the show. Love watching you be you. Like other comments listed, I wished you didn’t read the negative comment. It changed my mood and overall pissed me off.

  • last night my girlfriend and I drank a bottle of 2002 Santomas malvasia from Slovania. bought as a bin end for £1.30 (about 2 bucks) it was being sold as cooking wine by the store. I thought it was worth the gamble. malvasia’s are not supposed to last that long but there was so much acid in the slovanian version that it not only lasted but was great, smelt and tasted like real french cider!!!! a treat.

And what the hell is a cove? do you mean Clove? at least that’s what we call them in london. Love ya GV

Great show. Impressed by your downplay of outrageous racism with the scathing letter you received. I’m just getting into wine. Having picked up Kevin Zraly’s American wine Guide for 2009 after stumbling upon a great book from a while back, A Vineyard Garden by Molly Charpellut, I’m seriously considering this industry as a viable career choice. The last few days I’ve been drinking a 2006 Vidal Blanc by the now-out-of-business Furrow Winery which was located in tiny El Paso, Il. It’s actually a great little wine. Too bad they had to close up in 2008. It was the first out of Central IL, and was a stop on the Illinois wine trail.

Love the blind tasting format. It is so good to get wines evaluated away from the subliminal cues you get from the label. Also great you tried wines from both the old and new worlds, as a foreigner I cannot relate to the all US blind tastings.
The person who dissed you was an uptight idiot. Keep your style going unchanged.
Re QOTD 2007 Villa Marie Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabeney 2007. 5th growth quality and $US10. Love to see you put that in a blind tasting of cabs.

    Gary,

I love you doing the blind tastings! I´ll get those two new world giants.

QOTD: 2001 Barolo la Pressenda from Abbona. I guess it is still way to young. Plenty of tannins and very very dry could get nothing but redcurrant juice. 80 pts.
    Regards from Germany

I had the same 2006 Dunham “Shirley Mays” Chardonnay a couple of weeks ago and came to the same conclusion… It’s WEIRD…. SUPER oily, heavy pineapple on the nose and too oaky for me in general. I have found that the Dunham style is generally far too oaky for my enjoyment which leads me to the QOTD: I drank the Dunham Lewis Vineyard Artist’s series Syrah 2006 which i would rate 87 points… and definitely a pazzzzz on the qpr scale… there’s great fruit lurking behind the oak, but papa Dunham won’t let it come out and play….

  • Wow… great episode. It proves how different people’s palates are (some people like chewing on 2-by-4s).

Pichierri?s ?Tradizione del Nonno? ?05 Primitivo – raw primitivo power. I’s score it 89 points.

Favourite number? I don’t think I have one, but I’m going to say 27.
