    Great show Gary.

QOD: 1999 Shafer HSS Deep garnet color leads to a nose of currant and sweet saddle leather. Round full body is seemless with blackberry, dark cherry, candied plum, vanilla, and a hint of tobacco. Finish lasts 60 seconds. I did not notice any raisin others have. Intersting comparing this to a 2000 Matriarch which contained more chocolate and upfront fruit but lacked some of the complexity and seemlessness of the HSS. 95 pts

  • AHHHH!!!! GV you almost answered my question. The ’05 that came up last is a year off for me. My email to you recently asks about a ’06 and ’08 rec for my two new daughters 21st. Hit me up.

Thanks for show, another awesome tme hangin with you.

QOTD: 2003 Peachy Canon Zin, Incredible Red
I don’t know if that qualifies as “cult” but it was in my wine world. This wined show great red fruit with a sweetness that came fromt he fruit and not a candied sugar add. A great fruit bomb without the over the topness. Don’t remember it being extremely complex but it put me on a search for great Zins as a result.

    Thanks for everything!

P.S. How do i get a shout out on the comments part? Just asking.

  • Does this episode prove, to a small degree that is, that sometimes the more you pay the more you get(in terms of quality)?

    QOTD: 2003 Ramey jericho canyon

A great bordeaux blend of cab.sauv., merlot and cab.franc. A big nose of spice, cedar and sweet fruit with notes of toasted oak. Intense, tannic, elegant and super complex on the palate, long finish. Good to drink now but will def. improve with way more time. A solid balance between old and new world styles. Im still waiting for the franciacorta episode…

Don’t know about cult wine but the Elyse 2003 Zinfandel has made me into a Zin lover. It blew my socks off! 96 points. If your ever in Lantana FL, Check out Lantana liquors.Small store but huge on specialty wines. The owner Sonny is incredible and highly knowledgeable. It’s like walking into a secret storefront on Harry Potter!(for lack of a better description)If you live in Palm Beach county it’s a must visit, you never know what lurks within!

A great episode with good information and another call to explore a segment of the wine world I have yet to experience.

QOTD – I am still exploring the basic levels of wine and accordingly, not so mcuh those deemed the cult varieties. I am still having fun with simple wines but can see the next levels as I progress.

Bonaccorsi ’04 Pinot Noir – Melville Vineyard – at a trade show. Mind shattering intense perfume. Delicate body ,deep, curvy flavors of gorgeous red berry and cola notes. A triathlete- has real length. 91-92.

John Duval Plexus ’06 – same show. Heavyweight! Heavenly! Spectacular ‘ killed it’ effort from ex- Grange, R.W.T. winemaker. Shz/Mat/Gren. dense, and really concentrated BANG for the bucks. (under $50). 93-94.

Robert Kamen ’04 Cab. Sauv., Sonoma Mtn. – black and blue fruits, accompanied by vanila, and earth notes. Simply Delicious, I love his wines. 92.

QOTD: Breggo Cellars Pinot–think it was the ’06. Bright cherry fruit, nicely balanced, some mushroom action, strawberries, creamy finish. Very food-friendly.

On a whim, I included a bottle of the Kanzler in my last order. Sounds like it was a good move.

Thanks for the heads up, G.

QOTD: None. I try not to buy in to the hype of the cult wines. Too overpriced.

Great show on these mailing list wines.
QOTD: I haven’t tried it yet but I bought it 2 months ago at a sale: 2003 Vall Llach – is that a ‘culty’ wine?

    Great episode Gary,

Thanks for the heads up on the Kanzler-signed up for the mailing list soon as you commented. One of the best American Pinots I have ever tasted is the 2004 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Kanzler Vineyard-a truly religious experience-have been on theie wine list ever since. Pricy smicey-I just have to deal with it! My vice, her benefit.

QOTD-Peter Michael ?La Carriere? Sonoma County Chardonnay 2006. Your episode of California mailing list wines inspired me. I am having a glass of it as I write this comment. Very hot night here in southern California, so the wine is a perfect match-Bright honey dew melon, tropical pineapple laced with pears and spice firming up with green apple acidity with a creamy long finish. The only drawback is the oak monster ? who wants to come out to play: he (or she) gives butterscotch kisses reminders throughout every mouthful. Still a wonderful wine-the fruit is beautifuly integrated-and you gave me a good excuse to have it on a Monday night. Cheers

What a fun show…It’s always interesting to see who’s got something new in the works…

QOTD: My “cult” wine isn’t really a cult wine…but it’s a wine that I think should have a following…you know the producer…but I’d be surprised if you’ve had this bottle. Patty & Jim named a block on their estate vineyard after their neighbor Mike Etzel (winemaker/vintner at Beaux Freres). This is probably the BEST young Oregon Pinot Noir that I have ever had.

2004 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Etzel Block
My goodness time has done this baby proud. Beautiful funk, earth, truffles, and wild strawberries on the nose. This wine is something like an addiction for me…it is simply impossible to explain the pull this has on me. You can’t understand it if you haven’t been here…sitting beside me with your nose in the glass. Jim Anderson is a generous and kind man…and I would love to say that he’s influenced me on this wine…but I don’t think he has, as my friend sitting beside me is also just as mind boggled over this wine. In the mouth the purity of fruit lends itself to something like freshly squeezed cherry juice and raspberry sorbet and the finish just lingers on and on…I’m addicted and I must have more. (94 pts.)

QOTD: Come on, I’m a CKC (we haven’t gotten a shout out in a while!) & can currently only dream of drinking vino that costs that much. Ask me when I’ve graduated & have a full time job, but for now it’s $15/bottle or less, maybe a $25 bottle for my birthday.

Gary – you stole my thunder man….I cant believe you!!!

That was an A grade show my man, super quality wines. Kanzler PN tasted alot similar to the qotd wine i tasted below.

qotd….Cult wine…WILLIAMS SELYEM 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, very burgundian in style, with lots of new world character. tastes of Cola, ripe strawberry and raspberry notes great integration of good quality oak, small amounts of earthiness which is derived from the small amounts of whole bunches that are put in during fermentation. I had the pleasure of working the 2002 Harvest @ Williams Selyem

Nice episode Gary… The ‘cults’ I have had recently are the ’02 Shafer HSS a couple times (thank to a great couple from Monrovia) and the ’04 Hourglass Cabernet which I personally scored a 97… Also a very small wine is Shelter Headwater which is one of those secret wines I scored a 96.

Crush It Cruse. I wouldn’t say we are certainly in, but defiantly very interested.

Interesting show. Way outside my price point so never going to see any of these wines. If mailing list wines are generally in this price point I will probably never be subscribing to any (or at least not order off one).

QOTD: Never had a buzzed/cult wine.

  • Great show, Gary. Gonna try and find that Kanzler Pinot…

QOTD: I have two. Jacqueline is a white Bordeaux blend (Sauv Blanc/Semillon) from Chateau Boswell that just knocked me out. Buttered popcorn on the nose. 92+ pts.

The other is the Realm Cellars 2005 “The Absurd” blend. 41% Cab, 35% PV, and 24% Merlot. Just fantastic, but a little pricey at $140+ bones.

Gee the least expensive wine gets the biggest score – why are we not
    surprised.

QOTD: Got to taste the 2004 Bond Pluribus (95 RP) at an industry
tasting this spring. Very big, heavy, fruity wine. Balckberry
syrup with hints of leather and some cedarbox.

It was a great show. Funny how good wines brings the thunder out. You looked happy doing it, hell I felt happy watching the show . Alas the price piont is more than I feel comfortable paying for. Could you do another show on red blends ,its where my palate is now?

QOTD: Probably not a cult wine. But Columbia Crest Walter Clore Red wine 2002
was the one I remember most. For me it had it all great fruit ,blackberry along with cocoa and even some spice and a nice long finish. The tannins were well integrated. Score it a 94
