QOTD: The only “culty” wine I’ve had in the last year is Turley old vine Zin. I actually thought it was too young. The tannins were too tight. 89.

    Hey Gary,
I’m a little sad you didn’t put Aum Cellars 05 Cab in the mix today. Only 200 cases made, but we refuse to charge those crazy prices because we want people to share our wine with friends. Since I won the grape trivia pop quiz last week…
I’ve been tasting a lot of great boutique Cali wines lately. Over the last couple weeks, some outstanding ones were the Erle Hopland Syrah 06, which started off silky and smooth with good dark berries and leather, then opened into a wealth of minerals, coffee, chocolate and red berry. Another spectacular wine was the Boheme Taylor Ridge Pinot 06, which took a while to open up, but then was an ethereal rich melange of fruit, earth and fresh sea air. Reminded me of 1er Cru Gevery Chambertain. The Foppoli Sauv Blanc from Knights Valley was also stunning, with dense minerals and acid holding up tremendous kiwi, citrus and apple fruits.

Kudos to you Gary. I’ve now seen many, many episodes, but this one was really a home run. I just love discovering new CA cabs and pinots. I really have not bought into the cult cab phenomenon because they are so expensive and so young. However I have been blown away by some of the new Sonoma pinots because they are more affordable and approachable.

QOTD: Recently had a 1991 Chateau Musar which was made by a frenchman who started a winery in Lebanon in the 1930s. I don’t know how this family has managed to survive all the bombing over the years but they make some interesting wines. Their wines are fermented in concrete and often take up to 10 years of aging in vats and oak before they are ready for drinking. The wine I had was a combination of cabernet, cinsaut, carignan, grenache and mourvedre. It was absolutely delicious with a creamy smoothness that I’ll never forget.

luv to see some wine Crushing your pal!
QOTD- no cult wines for me

  • Kristen

I loved the show! I really need to do more to expand my palette, I know…

BTW, my little “gift” came in the mail today from WineLibrary and I cannot wait to use it!!

Friends brought over a wine last night that I cannot wait to pop open tonight. It is a Door County Cherry Wine, so I do not expect it to be complex, but maybe yummy! Door Coutny is an area in northern Wisconsin and a lot of people near me like to go there. Also, my friends told me that the midwest (Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc. but not including Michigan) now make more wine than Napa Valley. Do you want to comment or verify that?

QOTD: had a 03 Rivers Marie Cab back on the 4th of July. I don’t really drink much cali wine, but it was the 4th of july, so it was cali time:

2003 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon – USA, California, Napa Valley (7/4/2009)
nose: dark, pungent, and captivating nose filled with black cherries, black cherry liqueur, creme de cassis, spices, dark red fruits and bits of pipe tobacco and hints of leather. excellent depth with a real good richness to it

taste: full bodied but well balanced at the same time with slight hints of oak, black cherries, kirsch liqueur, tobacco, and bits of leather and spices. Good tannins that are nice and juicy but not overbearing or hard

overall: a perfect way to celebrate the 4th. This was decanted for about 2 hours and then bottle aired after taking a sip for about another hour before digging in. Threw some good sediment in the decanter. An outstanding cab that gives me everything I want and handles the vintage well (92 pts)

I’m surprised that the Kanzler showed like that, glad it did of course. I’ve generally found their fruit to be more on the cola side of things. I’ve been really interested to see the dancing hares and am glad you did it

Liked the show Gary. Now that TN has amended there law about direct shipping of wine into our state, I might be able to sign up for some of these!!

QOTD: I dont think I have had a “culty” wine yet. The most expensive wine I have had lately was the Jocelyn Lonen cab last year. It was tremendous!! 🙂

Already on the Kanzler list & still can’t get any. Now I’ll probably never get it. Thanks Gary. ;o) Great show!

It’s not really cult-y, but it’s pretty unknown. Roessler PN in Sonoma. Their Blue Jay which is one of their lower level PNs, not from a single vineyard is, IMO, spectacular. I joined the wine club after trying it. I gave it a 90 and I think that now, and even in another year, it can easily be a 92-94 kind of wine. For the price, amazing!

    QOTD:
I dont know if it would be called a cult wine, but the 06 Betts and Scholl OG grenache (which seems pretty hyped up) was excellent. I dont have tasting notes for it but I remember some really nice ripe strawberries with a lot of compexity. Thanks for the show!

QOTD: The closest thing I have had to a cult wine recently was the Vayniac Cab. 😉 Hey, it is much hyped and not available, how much more cult-y can you get. As for opinions of the wine…. I think it is going to be EPIC.

QOTD: 2006 Ancient Peaks Paso Robles Zinfandel. I bought two bottles of this from K&L to try. It was a couple of weeks before it got picked up. I tried it shortly after and it was an OMG wine. And the best part is that it was $13.99. Spectator rated it 93 and I might go 1pt higher. I immediately got online to order 6 more only to find that it’s long since sold out. I called K&L and asked the lady who answered the phone if they were going to get any more in. Her quick laugh told me not to hold my breath. I don’t know why but I put it on my waiting list at K&L. A month goes by and I get a match message from them. Seems that out of the blue they got 10 more cases. I ordered my 6 online within 10 minutes and then started to e-mail a fellow Wino to tell them about it but before I got the e-mail sent (25 minutes) all 10 cases were gone. Mike Sinor (was with Domaine Alfred) is the winemaker and I figured if he could produce good pinots making an outstanding zin should be a walk in the park.

QOTD: I’ve got nothing. Not a cultish wine to be seen. However, after you effusive praise for the Kantlzer pinot, I did some searching and found this reference (yes, on a competitor’s website, alas!):

    http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1033947

You’ll notice the reference at the end to the sources of this Landmark pinot actually include Kantzler. Just wondering if you’ve tried this, and, if not, if it’s worth investigating. The price certainly seems inviting.
