lines of the day – ‘dissecting these wines for my palate (which is why you watch the show – not for these clowns) and ‘don’t touch the Jets spit bucket EVER AGAIN’

Not my favourite format…I don’t particularly want to hear the views of Joe Public, and once again the sound didn’t work on the audience

I wouldn’t have minded all those stiffs if they filmed it on the N train.

Nice show, I like the large group interaction. Good change of pace.

    QOTD:
I’d have to say 2004 Penfold’s Bin 407 or the 2003 Pirramimma Shiraz

    Hi Gary,

QOTD, I don’t have a fav, but enjoyed many SB and Shiraz from those places. The 2004 Cab/merlot from Greg Norman was a yummy wine for little dollars. I pefer the syrahs from France. I am really surprised by all the peeps that liked the Molly Dooker wines. I think most still need about ten years in the bottle…:)

QOTD – recently, I had a bottle of Two Hands Angel’s Share (2004) that was delicious!

  • Several Pinot Noirs that I no longer remember the name of. I have been quite disappointed with the D’Arenberg inexpensive wines as they taste like science projects not wines. Still couldn’t hear the panel well and GV developed a pronounced echo in the middle of the episode if Mott is reading this.

  • Only Aussie/NZ rivalry is on Flight of the Concords.

  • Putting the “pretty girl” (who brought nothing to the table wine-wise) in the shot . . . how cliche.

I also was disappointed with the last Stump Jump Red I had. I used to think of it as a pretty reliable $10 wine. And I think there are way too many Marlborough NZ Sauv. blancs on the market. Most are not worth bothering with.

QOTD: I had a Two Hands Ares Shiraz last year – can’t remember the vintage. I remember thinking it was excellent.

  • Good episode, Gary! I like the format this week with the mass tasting–providing more than one point of view on the wines showcased, but not too many where collecting individual feedback is chaotic! Looking forward to more NYC episodes!

Hands down, of the handful of New Zealand wines I’ve tried over the past two years, the Kimberly Crawford Sauvignon Blanc (both 2007 and 2008 vintages) has been my white wine of choice. The aroma and taste is similar to the characteristics of the wine showcased in the episode, and is reasonably priced.

Kim Crawford isnt bad year after year. Is there not something about `Grange’
    that might be OK

I’m not crazy about these reagons or white wine, but I will go with

“SAUVIGNON BLANC KIM CRAWFORD MARLBOROUGH 2008”

It starts with tropical flavor like passion fruit and opened up to grapefruit and vivid finish. Very interesting for the price!!

Hey Gary, I agree with Petey Pablo, that woman in the bright red dress was distracting. I don’t really like this format. Nothing personal against your guests, but they brought nothing to the table. QOTD: Turkey Flat shiraz is one of the best wines from down under.

    Hi GV,

It’s nice to see little bit of NYC street movement…

Gary did you checked the mail recently? I sent something for Misha a long time ago …

QOTD: The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2003, d’Aremberg, Australia.

  • QOTD: I hate the single best questions. It’s so tough to pick one. I did love a Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc I had a little while ago. Not at my main system to pick out the exact one.

QOTD: I’m SO glad you mentioned New Zealand Riesling!! I had a recent vintage of Frogmore Creek Dry Riesling from Penna, Southern Tasmania that was RIDICULOUSLY good. I’ve got to continue to seek out more Aussie, Kiwi, and Tassy Rieslings…

A little harsh on d’Arenberg, who produces , for the most part, such an array, and range of far better than average wines. The Stump Jump is their entry level, made in large quantities – their market share, bread and butter, to compete with the oceans of rubbish/plonk for unknowing or uncaring drinkers of ‘wine’ who look for nothing more. Though I’m not that kind of wine drinker (I’d 99 out of a hundred times, drink really good beer over cheap, crappy wine), I’ve had to, for many years, make buying decisions based on the quality and comparative costs of thousands of wines. Perennially, The Stump Jump easily outperforms most anything in its price range. I wish you’d have stated as much on the outstanding record of the house of d’Arenberg.

QotD – simply put, most likely, 1996 Jim Barry ‘The Armaugh’.

Pretty intense, and delicious, but the top Prestige and Proprietary name brands often end up showing practically larger than life itself! Hill of Grace, Yalumba Octavius, Grange, and the like really can taste incredible, but can easily overpower a great meal. Conversely, when they underperform, (and they CAN, and DO, similar to our friend Stump Jump here), they leave a bitterness in the heart and mind over their cost (and the time invested in cellaring). At least that’s how it plays for a normal guy like me, who’s not made out of money.

Had a 1995 Harlan and 2002 Coppermine on my birthday, and liked the Aussie better. Been my fav from there so far.

QOTD – Sole Beech Sauvignon Blanc Reserve ’08 (NZ) – I had a bottle of it the other day, great wine but gave me a wicked headache the next day. I also enjoyed Koonowla Riesling ’07 (Australia).

Good episode, another fun group, some groups are more fun than others.

QOTD – New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Kim Crawford and Nobilio Icon.

Austrialian Shiraz – Kaesler comes to mind.

Gary – fun episode except for the ECHO-ECHO-echo… chamber in the middle of it!

QOTD – 2005 Shirvington Cabernet – had it twice and both times it was as good of a wine I’ve had from anywhere else in the world.
