  • The turning circle of a warship is known as the “Tactical Diameter” (TD). This is basically the shortest distance that a warship can turn 180 degrees while at combat speed without heeling over. The USS Enterprise CV-6 that served in WWII had a TD of 790 yards when travelling at 30 knots.
Therefore with a TD of 790 yards at 30 knots it takes 72 seconds to turn a warship around 180 degrees.

    Just the facts Chuk:)

  • Epic show. Mr. Terlato is fascinating. Thanks, GV.
QOTD: We need more distributors to actually pour $30 wine and up so that we can taste it for ourselves before making the plunge with our $$$. I go to many tastings where the majority of wines being offered are the usual junk.

QOTD: If I knew that a higher priced wine would actually be better then a lower priced one every time, then I might be motivated to buy higher, but the plain and simple fact (as seen over and over again both here at winelibrary and through daily experience) is that the higher priced wine may not be the better wine for me and my palate, so why would I buy it? It also normally depends simply on whether or not I have a reason to buy higher. I am a huge fan of what I like to call “epic wine” and I might go with the higher priced wine that I know is epic and will be enjoyed by all, if I was getting a bottle for a celebration of some sorts or for a get together with the Family, something like that. Also to buy higher outside of that 14 bone limit would take a commitment financially, if you were to do it on a regular basis. Buying higher isn’t always better, its all about the quality within the bottle.
The mirror question to this would be, why would I buy a wine considered to be better by others, thus priced higher, when I know that I can buy 2 maybe 3 bottles of wine for that same price or cheaper and experience more variables, more regions and more life, then I can from just one wine?

This was a great show with interesting insight. Looks like it was a blast. GV, keep it up man 🙂

QOTD: (Good Question) For myself – and I think that for many others – the trick is to price and sell wines in clearly discernible increments of quality. In other words, you need to impress upon us that a 10$ is so good, a 20$ is so much better, and a 30$ bottle is even better than that. The problem with most tasting notes (no matter how cheap the wine) is that they tend to focus upon the good qualities and fail to mention the limitations of a wine. If you sell more expensive wines as having more benefits/less limitations then there is a built in impetus for consumers to desire to climb the price ladder and pay out a bit more money.

    Awesome two-parter

  • QOTD: As a distributor, you need to get more variety on the edges. We don’t all have easy access to Gary’s store and outside the cities they only carry a hand full of wines over $20.

great stuff. great stuff. so much awesome info.

QOTD: i think the main thing for most is the uncertainty of whether or not a more expensive wine will be good. with a 10$ wine, for some reason, we’re not really mad if it sucks, because it was 10$, but if it’s 40$ and it sucks, then we might get mad. i would love to go to wine store and not have any prices on the wine, and pick out some wines that i think will bring thunder and excitement to everyone drinking them, without any concern for the price, but it doesn’t work that way, unless you’re a high roller like GV.

Gary, more good wine has beem drunk in Chicago than the rest of the country. If it was not for people like Anthony, you would not have a ‘wine store’. I would love to have Tony and Gary together for a lovely dinner with their partners anytime in Reno. They say you can never go home again, but I would love to do Chicago again anytime with you Anthony. Thank you.

Great Part 2! Sorry MJ made the Knicks look like chumps, but he had a way of doing that to everyone, including the Wizards ;).
QOTD: I think the biggest hurdle to go from $20 to $30 is confidence. Unless you’ve already tried the wine, you’re taking a big leap of faith. Wine bars that offer a wide selection by the glass (those Enomatics machines make that practical) may allow people to splurge with confidence. So my theory is: more wine bars = more $30 purchases

    What a gentleman!

I encourage young adults and those new to wine to split a good bottle. 4 friends splitting a $40 wine isn’t much more than a tap beer or two at the local watering hole.

Great two episodes. What a character. That is one of the things I love about wine and food, the interesting and quality people you meet.

QOTD: I think someone already put this, but the ability to taste it. Every day I drink wine, and I can’t afford to drop $30 a night, but I could do it more often than I do. I just hate to get burned at that price level. Wine industry is like every other consumer industry, there is a lot of pricing based on brand (or appellation) or trend, not so much on quality.
