  • Great show Gary!

My favorite cereal is Corn Pops. I don’t even put it in a bowl with milk. I just eat out the box.

Interestingly enough, I’ve never had any of those cereals you had on the show or any of the popular cereals aimed at kids. My mother couldn’t afford them so she never bought them. So when I was young, my favorite cereal was plain ole store brand corn flakes with sugar poured over it and a little bit of milk. I don’t like soggy cereal.

I’m interested in trying out pairing cereal and wine. It looks like a fun experiment to do with my boyfriend.

On a side note, I met up with some friends and we were discussing Anthony Bourdain. We are all really big fans of his. Somewhere along in this conversation, you popped up in my head. They haven’t heard of you so I had to go on and on about how great you are. One of my friends asked me if I had the opportunity to have dinner with either Anthony Bourdain or you, who would I choose. I chose you because even though I feel like I would have a great time with Anthony, I would have an equally great time with you and learn so much from you at the same time. Currently I am unemployed and trying to figure out if I should follow my dreams of being a video editor and photographer or find a random job somewhere and be miserable but at least I’ll know that I’ll be getting paid at the end of the week. You’ve been inspiring me to follow my dreams and go for it, even though I have no idea if it will work out in the end.

    Gary,

Fantastic idea. Even my wife is intrigued and has decreed we have to have a “kids night” kind of stay-in date and have wine and cereal. She’s all about the Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I’m all about the Captain, and we just happen to have a bottle of Spaetlese in the rack.

Your discussion of the Captain reminds me of a passage in the Neal Stephenson book Cryptonomicon. One of the main characters is a major Captain fan and there’s a long description of what he considers to be the proper way of eating it. Classic.

You go for soggy. I go for damp with still enough crispness so that when you put the spoon in your mouth with some Captain and milk and create a little vacuum action, the milk gets sucked into the hollows within the Captain and you get this great taste and texture thing going.

    Now I’m getting hungry.

  • What a fun AND informative episode, Gary. Wine and cereal?who knew? Well, I guess you did, eh. This episode was so fun I?ll be watching it again at some point.

QOTD: My favourite cereal would have to be plain granola with a dash of honey, topped off by fresh blueberries and some bits o? dark chocolate mixed in for good measure.
I also love parfaits ? plain German yogurt with German/Austrian/Swiss müesli. Mmm, delicious.
As for a mainstream boxed American brand, my pick is Post Cranberry Almond Crunch.

So, what wines do you think would go best with these?

I always get a kick seeing you eat – as if you have to shove in as much goodness as possible. I liked the pairing ideas and as always appreciate your thinking outside the box…. allusions considered, if not intended

  • QOTD: As a lover of healthy, hearty cereals, I’m split between Post Shredded Wheat and Bran (with a half-teaspoon of sugar if I’m in the mood for a touch of sweet), and Multi-grain Chex.

Multi-grain Cheerios places a distant third.

    Gary,

Don’t worry about the interview critique. Your enthusiasm is contagious. It is hard to sit quietly when you are naturally excited about the conversation. Stay real.

  • hilarious! reminds me of Chris Riccobono’s site — very off-key, laid-back video reviews of moderately priced wines. All in good fun.

btw, Frankenberry is good w/ Merlot. LOL

Captain Crunch Rules. Every so often though, shredded wheat works. I assume you meant cold cereals. Interesting wine pairings. Great episode.

Hey Gary- Got to say your show is money man. Really have just loved the enthusiasm and knowledge.

Going to buy Crush It for sure. Keep up the great work man.

P.S. As a lifelong (often suffering) Jets fan myself, I couldn’t be more pumped about the team attitude that Rex Ryan has instilled.

The best cereal in the world is indeed Cap’n Crunch. However, I was most blown away by your comments on how it scratches the roof of your mouth. I always thought this was a “personal problem” because I chewed this stuff with such aggressiveness. It tastes so good that you have to power thru a mouthful of the Cap’n so you can move on to the next incredible bite. Who knew it was a universal phenomenon? (“Life” cereal ain’t half bad either if you need an occasional break from the Cap’n)

  • You’re right, that pause in conversation was a bit shocking! I walked away, listening to this episode and, when it went silent, wondered if something was wrong with my computer!

Loved the episode. Way to keep it real. You did not do any of the fruitier cereals. What about Froot Loops?!

  • Gary;

You continue to make wine more human and less stuffy. I love cereal. QOTD: it all depends on my mood. Corn Pops and Mini Wheats when I want something fun. I also enjoy the organic cereals available.

Alle Beste as the Dutch say.

My boyfriend and I have just discovered possibly the most sublime pairing outside of Captain Crunch and Riesling: Oreos and a 2005 Font-Destiac Bordeaux. Amazing!

A few years ago, I was a finalist in a Wine Library contest. Wearing buck teeth, I gave a wine-tasting demonstration in which I paired Kellogg’s Froot Loops with what else — Mogen David Extra Heavy Malaga.
