As with the wines, this episode got better on the second day. great guest, really informative and entertaining banter…very well ‘balanced’

  • Great, Great Show,

We need more shows with more nerdy guests (nerd meaning fantastic indepth wine knowledge)…Joshua was a great guest, well done.

QOTD…I don’t buy Cali Cab, I like Cali Pinot instead…many high-end cali pinot producers have been selling plenty of wine during this economic crisis, not sure about the cali cab producers??

  • John R

Honestly, I am looking for quality. Currently I am buying lots of 2000, 2003, 2005 Bordeux, 2nd 3rd growths, great pricing. I just bought a case of 2005 Burg, 1st cru 1/2 price. Cali cab going into the economic crisis was expensive versus Bord and Burgs. I really like Cali, but quality to price, burg and bord is better. I think a lot of producers are happy mailing list sellers, ie 2007 Pinots sales. I think that if 2009 is a blockbuster in Bordeaux and they keep the pricing reasonable, below 2005 and above 2008 futures, Cali Cabs might suffer. Tony Turato said it in regards to the Stags Leap wine he sells, most of the price is the land.

QOTD: I’ve always like Cali. cabs and I continue to buy them. I’ve really taken a liking to the characteristics exhibited by Alexander Valley cabs, and they might present a little more value than Napa. While still in the $40-$80 (retail) range, on my last trip to Sonoma, I thought Robert Young, Hawkes, and Lancaster Estate all produced some tremendous cabs for their price points.

  • I wish I could have sat in on that tasting.

QOTD: Rarely do I buy CA cab. I live in Washington and the QPR here vs. there is insane.

Love Cali Cabs but they are so expensive I get better value and more enjoyment from Cali Petite Sirahs in the 12 to 25 dollar price range.

Enjoyed the 2 day show Gary. When I started getting into wine I drank nothing but cali cabs. As time has passed, and my palate expanded, I found wines I just liked better then cali cabs. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for them but it’s hard to find a good cali cab at a reasonable price.

Love the Cali cabs but the good ones are out of wack price wise. I still treat myself on occasion but have been leaning towards Merlots that are generally a better value. Also, with GV’s encouragement, I’ve tried Portugal and some Spanish wines bring good value and still satisfy. A neighbor of Diamond Creek puts out a fine Cab and Merlowww. The big ass Castello de Amorosa, where I stole my screen name. They never age enough around here.
I’m about to try my first real Rioja, Lopez de Heredia 01, suggested by the Wine Wench. What should I eat with it?

Great episode Gary! I know you don’t always like splitting them into 2 but this interview was well worth it. Your interviewing style was OUTSTANDING!! You let him talk as much as you could while still moving things along. I’ve criticized your style before but this time you came through in spades. Great job! He came shared a ton of interesting information and even though I tend to discount the ratings F&W give(I usually think they are too high) I may have to reconsider my stance.

QOTD: I stil am buying a bunch of Cali cabs. The pricing is a little hard to bear (I understand the land costs etc.) but I really enjoy them when they get them right. I buy Schrader, Shafer HS, Hobbs, Del Dotto, Far Niente, plus a smattering of small producers like Meander and Kelly Fleming.

  • Very good closing part II. This guest was amazing.

QOTD: No, I haven’t bought California USA Cabernet in a long time, not going back soon and probably not the expensive stuff. As I have said here before, it was all I drank for a long time and grew tired of it, some of it was great, outstanding wine, I wanted to venture out into wines I don’t know.
For now I am drinking wines from Spain, Portugal,Mexico, Austria, China, Argentina, Chile, France, Italy and South Africa… haven’t had any Australian wine for a while now.

    Good Show.

  • I this (both parts) is my favorite episode, and definitely my favorite guest – thanks for that! I had the Vinho Verde from yesterday’s episode a couple weeks ago and was amazed at how good it was for the price.
I never started buying California Cabs, they are a bit pricey for me. I am really excited about Southern Oregon / Rogue valley wines right now, that and “Italian varietals” from eastern Washington – Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, etc. – good QPR in my book.

    AWWWWWWWWWWESOME two part series.
QOTD: I don’t have the money to buy the great Cali Cabs, if I were to spend $80 for a special occasion I tend to look around the RM champagnes.

  • ex-lurkdawg

    great episodes. thanks.

qotd: I’ll go back to buying it when the prices come down. If they don’t I’ll keep buying what I am (many different French and Italian wines which I think, even with many French categories, offer better value in the $30-$70 range — below that I buy almost everything except CA cab and chard because those are usually huge letdowns for me).

QOTD….I’m not buying Cali Cabs at this level. For most part, they’ve been replaced with inexpensive pinots (No, inexpensive pinot is not an oxymoron anymore). I bought a bunch of Panther Creek’s Non Vintage blend ($17) and Sebastiani’s 2007 “Moobuzz” ($14). Gary probably won’t like it, but the price is right for me.

  • Great and interesting show!

QOTD… We pretty much stopped buying California cabernet sauvignon. The prices are simply too high, and honestly, for our palates, not worth the money. Why spend $200 on a bottle for cellar (or more) when I can get 4 or 5 bottles of something I like just as much – or more? We are buying lots of Washington State cabs and syrahs (Heck… I can go to the grocery store that is 2 miles from my home and buy a Leonetti cab right now for $85!). In the $40-50 range, I can get Woodward Canyon, Fielding Hills, Pepper Bridge, Robert Karl Inspiration Reserve, some of the Andrew Will wines, some of the DeLille wines…. heck – way too many labels to mention, that bring just as much thunder for a heck of a lot less cash.
