QOTD: I tend to prefer estate wines with the larger wineries; however, here in the Sierra Nevada foothills, there are a lot of very small wineries who have only small vineyards (or none at all) who make some excellent wine with locally purchased grapes. So “estate” isn’t everything.

  • QOTD: Nope. Doesn’t matter to me in the slightest. All that matters is whether the juice in the bottle is good or not. I couldn’t care less whether it was estate bottled or négociant.

Great show. Very interesting and sincere guest.

QOTD. I definitely prefer estate grown wine. I trust it more. Knowing the whole process is controlled by one source shows they really care about the product and are more likely have to put blood sweat and tears into it. Thus a more real, natural, and delicious product.

Yet another great guest! I don’t know what’s best; how knowledgeable Gary and his guests are, how passionate they are about wine or how much they obviously enjoy what they do.

Great two parter!Jeff is really cool cat, he had a lot of interesting things to say, and it sounds like he is really moving in the right direction with his families winery,Koodos Jeff.

QOTD:I think for me estate wines really show the true nature of what they are and where they come from,so for me it definitely matters.

    GARY!!!!
    Jeff!!

QOTD: It really matters. Its like a watermark on paper… The reason it matters to me, isnt because its a “status”, but rather its a sign/symbol that its YOURS… Estate isnt always the one I like best, but always the one I want to try!!

    Cool episode..cool shades. 🙂

I liked this guy. I wanna say that “Domaine Bottled” means everything to me, and it probably should, but I’m a ratings-whore. That doesn’t necessarily mean score, but it means tasting notes and the purported quality of a wine. Let’s be honest here, for the higher-end expensive wines it’s an expensive experiment to try a wine completely new to you.

I know it sounds kinda silly to those of you in the wine industry because you have the great gift of tasting a great deal of wine. But I mean, yeah, it’s expensive for us to try new stuff. A couple critics’ ratings makes a wine that much more attractive.

QOTD: As many others have answered: it does mean something to me. I haven’t read many comments, but I feel that the larger something is branded on a bottle, the less “hit” it is. Let me explain: I feel that when something doesn’t stand out the way it ought to via word-of-mouth or through brand representation, it gets over-emphasized through the label. An estate-branded bottle doesn’t need the first 10% or so devoted to and “Estate” label. I feel like bad wine is similar to an insecure person: emphasize the thing that the greatest number of people can relate to and enjoy–leave out the things that people will, over time, genuinely gain disdain for.

QOTD: As a wine drinker who has become particularly interested in the quality of the fruit source of the wines I buy, seeing “Estate” on a bottle at least hints that someone may have put some extra care into growing the grapes, so it means a little bit to me. However, what is more meaningful to mean is some indication of actual vineyard practices.

Great guest, interesting about the ‘3 corners’

QOTD: To me it means ‘unique’. Not necessarily good or bad, there can be great wines coming out of operations like Crushpad or other community operations, but estate bottled is the essence of that family/land/operation, and they have seen it through beginning to end- making it THEIR unique product.

Excellent show! Been a fan of the G.B. for a while, and now I realize why. Great people + great terroir = great wine. QOTD – Very important. It’s the purest way a winemaker can communicate his/her ideas to the consumer. Another great example: Kunde. Not necessarily garnering the big scores all the time, but at least they’re always offering me thier land, their idea of winemaking, and their passion. Great wine CAN be made without it, but I don’t find it as compelling or thought provoking knowing it’s made from a bunch of bought grapes.

Great question Jeff. To me the knowing a wine is estate bottled is not as important as my prior experiences with the wine. For example, if I was choosing between two bottles to buy (one estate, one non-estate) and I had tasted the non-estate before and liked it, I would probably go with it again.

That said, if I made wine for a living and grew my own grapes, I would darn well put ESTATE BOTTLED in huge letters on the front. It is something to be proud of. It is your farm and your product. Best of luck.
