Great question Jeff. To me the knowing a wine is estate bottled is not as important as my prior experiences with the wine. For example, if I was choosing between two bottles to buy (one estate, one non-estate) and I had tasted the non-estate before and liked it, I would probably go with it again.

That said, if I made wine for a living and grew my own grapes, I would darn well put ESTATE BOTTLED in huge letters on the front. It is something to be proud of. It is your farm and your product. Best of luck.

Estate bottled is very important. In Canada we have wines labeled as C.I.C(cellared in canada)and consumers did not know where the grapes were grown. The grapes could be from Chile, California etc. Jancis Robinson called attention to this practise when visiting the Okanagan and I applaud her. Jeff looks a lot like Tom Arnold.

  • A cigar smoking chompin kinda Cab drinker or big heavy Zin guy….??? Hey…I resemble that remark!!!!!

I’m going to have to get some of that stuff and join your list just to see if your right. I’ll be in Sonoma nad Napa next week so I’m gonna come by and see you Jeff…..and yes, with my cigar. So I’ll see you then. Hope you have a smokin section.

QOTD: Estate to me means balls to the walls juice. Sometimes it’s not as good as other wines though, but 90% of the time Estate grown or bottled will be a buy factor or should I say try factor for me. But then what do I know…..I’m just a cigar smoking chompin kinda Cab drinker or big heavy Zin guy…!!!!

QOTD: Estate bottled has never meant much to me. But Gary’s excellent consulting skills should be able to fix that.
Also, I just went back to Cork’d to catalogue some of my wines and was pleased to find that Cork’d had been fixed. Much easier to use and friendlier now. Thanks.

  • One of your best shows! Really interesting discussion with your guest. He was very honest, which I really appreciate. Great content. Please make sure he returns. I received my Secret Thanksgiving 4 pack here on the West Coast today—as promised before Thanksgiving. So happy.

Hot Damn if I didn’t just have a Breggo G-Wurtz this past weekend w/some Indian food. We visited them last month and walked out with a boat-load of their product. Obviously, Pinots are their bread-and-butter, but their whites are equally as killer. I read they were bought by Cliff Lede. I hope they stay as is. Great show guys.

QOTD: I trust Estate bottled wines. Have I been disappointed…sure. But, not as much as I’ve been impressed and happy with the wine.

QOTD: This comment is probably similar to most everyone that doesnt drink a lot of Estate wines would say (reason: Im in college). I respect them far more than wine-BUSINESS wines, and if I ever went into the WINE business I would want to operate a Estate winery. However, I feel the business expectations of an Estate winery should not be more business/money hungry driven, but more passion driven. The business/money hungry wineries, I think, will fall on there own by following a money trail and not a passion trail. As a college student I support the wine with the best price point, but I not a target audience consumer. In five years when I can afford to express more of a preference, I will drink wines from authentic and genuine wineries with good price points.

Great show. WOW GV, did you ever put Jeff in the hot seat with some of those questions. A bit exciting, but I hope its not a new turn WLTV is going to take.

    Take care.

QOTD: I like the fact that a wine is estate-grown, but it’s not the #1 selling point to me.

I grew up on a family farm/ranch. The consumer is always better served the longer the product is in the hands of the producer makes no difference if its potatoes or pinot, cattle or cab.

QOTD: I look for artisan wines and Estate grown and produced is super important. I agree with Gary that the label should make a bigger deal of this. I also like to know as specifically as possible the sub appelation. For example, Sonoma Coast doesn’t mean a lot, but Green Valley does. In addition, I like to read the back label for further info on the grape’s journey, how it is grown handled and aged.

Great guest, I love it when the sparks fly.

Great show and an equally great guess. Gary you need to take a break from cabernet tasting, if you can. Still pushing the white wine experience, will make an effort to buy more. Have you tried that Columbia Crest Reserve CB 2005 yet?

QOTD. I have to admit that estaste grown has not been a significant reason for buying a wine. I can how it could make a difference to the wine.
