I liked the guest even more second time round, seems like a solid dude

  • QOTD: I’ll admit that I never bothered to notice “estate” or not – but I’ll start my own testing, and let you and Gary know!

    Estate wine, great. But you need to make a campaign to alert customers as to what that means from a California wine. Every country and it seems region has a different classification. For myself, I like it best when I know exactly where that wine was produced. But to really benefit from this I think its necessary to have been to that place to help you tie yourself to the land and people.

    ?OTD – I’d have to say this is the best question of the day. Really tough to separate what is important from what you want to be important to you. Really I can’t say my palate is quite fine tuned enough to be that discriminating. I just want the best value that tastes right at that time. Purchasing grapes gives you so much more flexibility I would guess. I’m really surprised by my own answer!

    Awesome question.
    I’d have to say yes estate grown does make a difference althugh it’s not the determining factor.
    There are many skillful winemakers who craft wonderful stuff from grapes they purchase.
    But that designation does imply a more authentic expression of terroir for obvious reasons.
    And that branding suggestion was brilliant.

    Where was this dry Riesling from? Germany? Alsace?
    Would love to know this!

    @QOTD
    It does matter! Esp. over here in Germany where it’s all about single vineyards!

    Great show dudes!

    Good guest, interesting story.

    QOTD: I think estate wines can be trusted better, as in paying a ridiculously high price for the 2007 vintage of a wine that you really loved in the 2005 vintage, but they won’t always be a better wine. With limited acreages in those top dollar regions, you might get a better wine from a blend that incorporates varietals from all the best growing areas in a region, for example. While going through the Texas Hills Wine Country last weekend, we sampled 6 wines, then found out that 5 of them were produced and bottled in Australia! No offense to those wineries, they had a disease wipe out their crop for a year and did what they had to to keep their customers happy, but what a surprise to hear that almost none of them were actually from Texas!

    “Estate” – I like, I believe in it, I buy it more often. I’ll pay more. If it does not live up to the quality, I’m unlikely to buy the other non-estate product.

    Estate bottled and Grown makes a difference in some high end but some of the highest end wines in California are sourced grapes. Even GB wines if they are buying Hyde or Hudson grapes are sourced grapes so I’m not sure what we are talking about here. To me, it says that you are putting your reputation behind the whole business from growing to crushing, to all aspects of the business. It speaks to the winemakers sensibility but may or may not have any bearing on quality. I have had estate bottled and grown wines that I thought absolutely sucked.
    I, for one like guests though it is sometimes hard to hear them over GV. It takes so pressure off to produce a show almost every day to have a guest.
