I liked the guest even more second time round, seems like a solid dude

Estate bottled and Grown makes a difference in some high end but some of the highest end wines in California are sourced grapes. Even GB wines if they are buying Hyde or Hudson grapes are sourced grapes so I’m not sure what we are talking about here. To me, it says that you are putting your reputation behind the whole business from growing to crushing, to all aspects of the business. It speaks to the winemakers sensibility but may or may not have any bearing on quality. I have had estate bottled and grown wines that I thought absolutely sucked.
I, for one like guests though it is sometimes hard to hear them over GV. It takes so pressure off to produce a show almost every day to have a guest.

  • Great 2-parter…love the insight from the guest.
QOTD: I am all about experimenting with new varietals and appellations, so it’s not a determining factor on whether or not I will buy a wine. Estate-bottled makes a difference sometimes when I am buying special bottles for myself or quality-conscious friends and family. I love the tip Gary gave about an Estate-Bottled Association. It’s all about educating the larger wine community…and of course enjoying great estate-bottled wine!

QOTD: Kinda sorta. It’s nice to see but wont really effect my choice unless it’s a coin flip decision.

What is with the talk show format, Gary? I wish you would go back to the simplicity of what makes your show work.. taste 2-3 wines. read a comment or two and taste some wine.

Many of the finest wineries Use non-estate fruit grown to the winemaker’s strict specifications..
Much estate fruit is crap.. Look at all the over cropped expensive crap out there.. Cakebread Chardonnay comes to mind.

    Hey GV
Amazing guest!!!! Great show, it was truly a pleasure listing to Jeff and being apart of that conversation! Great show!! Estate Grown, In my opinion means everything!!! I think it represents authenticity and craftsmanship from start to finish- the winery has exhausted the full cycle of wine cultivation, it is a demonstration of passion and effort for the best possible out come of ones estate Its like buying a Ferrari form China No disrespect to the Chinese auto manufactures- point is it wouldn?t have that sparkle and in my opinion I would look at it differently and respect it differently

Great guest, really thought-provoking question. I’d say that as a newbie wine drinker, Estate bottled only really matters when I’m visiting a winery or buying wines from the same winery year after year. As a consumer in a location where wineries are more scarce, when I walk into a wine shop I don’t notice whether the bottles say Estate bottled or not. Consumerism aside, I believe that everyone making and selling the juice for a living should be required to have an Estate bottled program. If you’re buying juice from other people and making it in your basement, you’re only doing part of the work, and to sell your product for 40+ bones is a cop-out. I also believe that people like Jeff Bundschu-who grew up in wine country and have grape juice running in their veins-should be the majority of the winemakers, not some person who’s never worked a harvest or never seen a vineyard or farm until they were in their 20’s or later. But that’s probably idealistic.

If I ever make it back to Napa, Gundlach Bundschu is the very first place I will visit!
