For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

I did start with Napa, like so many Americans, and I have to say I am still really enjoying the wines that are coming out of Napa (my Mom and I just bought a 1996 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet that I’m really excited to try). Then again, I am also really enjoying wines from both France and (especially) Italy. My palate is relatively young, so ask me again in 5 years and we’ll see what I say.

QOTD: I started off in Napa and I guess I still am, however, I am now trying other regions of the world more often than I used to… it makes it fun to taste wines from around the globe. I live in the SF Bay Area, so I am really close to Napa and it bugs me that so many people around here are so narrow minded about other wine regions and judge them just on the fact that they are not “Napa”.

  • Thanks for tasting the Napanook. I was curious about it-
(Top 10 – I’m still digging it after all these years)

  • QOTD Napa: No.

QOTD: Did start with Napa and definitely not as keyed up today.

Another rock solid two-part episode with some fantastic wine talk. I’m not a regular Slate reader but will start looking for Mr. Steinberger’s byline and his book. Thank you.

QOTH: I started with Napa, eventually moving away, but have returned back again (along with Bordeaux and Rhone).

I started with Bordeaux, moved to Burgundy, and, fifteen years later, have been looking in great detail at the Rhone, far, far too late. Tried a Guigal La Landonne 1990 there a few months back. It was the best wine I have ever tasted – pure liquid tobacco with perfect black fruit and balance. The tobacco flavour was overpowering.

I have emigrated to France, which is a wine lovers paradise.

You just can’t get Napa here.

It might be worth trying to ship some over. What should I try?

    all the best

    Paul C.

  • Hey Guys

Great show thanks. I read the extract of Michael’s book in the most recent Decanter and really enjoyed.

QOTD: As an Australian I certainly did not start out with Nappa and I tend to avoid it. The perception amongst a lot of the ‘wine’ people I know is that it’s over-rated and offers poor value.’

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • Funny – I started with the south of France, then Bordeaux, then Loire, dabbled in Italy and Spain but I’m now looking for Napa cabs – good recent vintages coupled with more reasonable pricing levels and flavors I enjoy make it my go to place now.

  • Tat’s funny becasue I started out drinking champagne and french wines like le montrachet and what not. Now I’m going to Napa for the first time ever tomorrow. I like all wines but really can’t answer that right now. Big G man turned me on to so many wines I have no idea what Country I’m even drinking tonight….lol

    I guess I’ll know when I get back….

nice episodes. I liked having Michael on the show. Gary, I’m sure you’ll hear it enough, but I would quietly point out that your interview style seems to be on the decline. You were doing great for a while with not interrupting and now you are not doing as well. I like the show and I like when you have guests who are into wine, so keep up all of the good and maybe you can improve that one element once again.

qotd: I was never really interested in Napa as a wine region. I’ve liked some of the wines from there, but I don’t usually want the “classic” Napa style. I have gotten even more away from the wines than I used to be as I now think the value of Napa wines is generally poor (not always, of course) and would rather have something from another California appelation.

  • Great show and guest, and it was good not to see you cut him off.

QOTD: Living in Holland, I started with Bordeaux, then Burgundy and Loire, Alsace and Italy and Spain and only since 6-7 months expanding my horizon to Napa/Oregon.

I have to admit, you got some f-ing good stuff over there 😉

    Cheers,
    Sander

qotd I started out with Ribera Del Duero and did a world tour. I like some Napa, 07 Caymus is awesome, but really prefer Spain at the end of the day for my price range.

  • Well, so much for the Brun blanc. Still one of the better chardonnays I’ve had for the price, from anywhere.

Q: No, it was actually more like Languedoc – Italy – Rhone – Loire – Bordeaux – Spain – Loire or thereabouts, Napa’s never struck me as being much bang for the buck and when I do have them, the wines usually strike me as overdone. 14-15 percent for a Sauvignon Blanc? Really?
