For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

  • Well, so much for the Brun blanc. Still one of the better chardonnays I’ve had for the price, from anywhere.

Q: No, it was actually more like Languedoc – Italy – Rhone – Loire – Bordeaux – Spain – Loire or thereabouts, Napa’s never struck me as being much bang for the buck and when I do have them, the wines usually strike me as overdone. 14-15 percent for a Sauvignon Blanc? Really?

In the 6 or so months I have been serious about wine I have never entered a store with the goal of finding a Napa wine. I have had some great wine from Napa, but for the price most of it fails to give me a wine bon*r. There’s too much good wine out there at a much more attractive price, especially while I’m still exploring what the different regions of the world have to offer.

QOTD: Started out with a mix of Argentine Malbec and Napa Cab. I thought I absolutely loved fruit bombs, but then I went old-world. I still like good fruit in my wines, but balance is super-important.

Good guest. Nice banter. Keep up the good work.

Great Guest. Please, please, please keep nerding it up for those of us who don’t know much about wine. Just listening to you banter back and forth is so informative. Thanks.

Started with Napa in the late sixties (ouch!). Fell in love with Rutherford Dust. To this day I still love it. It is the soul of Napa Cabernet.

Another highlight in a string of great guests. The last couple of weeks have been premier cru shows. I read (and enjoy) Michael’s Slate column all the time. If Eric Asimov had walked in the door, it would have been my wine education in a nutshell… 1, 2, 3.

QOTD: never look for Napa; more often than not, I avoid Cali reds BECAUSE of Napa.

    Gentlemen, great show!
QOTD: Got into the wine game within the past 2 years or so, and I’ve always been motivated by exploring new things and finding great value, so I’ve never really been big into the California wines in general, especially not Napa. I’ve been loving the QPR coming out of places like rhone valley, rioja, campania etc etc and unfortunately not much of the California wines excite me in the same way that wines from places like these do. Hopefully that will start to change!

Started on Napa and branched out to other parts of Cali. Still love the big ass juicy cabs but for qpr GV has forced me to expand my universe. Great guest and good banter. I thought you were way hard on the white wine. I guess you’re staying honest but a unoaked Chardonay from Beaujolais for 13 little bones? You couldn’t even ship an empty bottle to me from France for $13. Can wait to try the Napanook.

Hi Gary and Mike, Yes I definately started with Napa and I’m still excited about it except for the price. True, there are a lot of jam bombs coming from Napa but if you do your homework it’s easy to find the gems like Napanook. One good thing about the high Napa prices is that it caused me to experiment with France and Italy a bit more. Loved the guest.

  • California Cab Lover

I started with Leibsfraumilch (sp?) and Zeller Zwatz Cat (I don’t remember even how to spell them) moved to White Zin and am now all over the map (except Germany and Australia).
I agree with the comments of others, Napa is far too expensive and the land excuse is ridiculous…. most of it was bought years ago.
