For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

If I am after a good Cab I will look to Napa but if I want a Petite Sirah,Zin,Petite Verdot or Barbera I will look to Amador Co. or Passo Robles or even Lodi

Great part 2, very easy watching yet informative show.

qotd; You start at Napa, then the world and someday back again.

  • A magnificent show!! On a Tuesday, I’m in 7th heaven (whatever that means) right now. You had a free-flowing wine/boxing conversation and stressed the importance of TYOP (Trust Your Own Palate) and yes Gary, after Episode 999 that will be your mantra. And being such a considerate businessman who goes out of the way to say “thank you.”

Pre-QOTD: Nope, no Napa. I asked for QPR and it has to be “off the wall.”

QOTD: Again, no. I know I got goosebumps the first time I tasted an ’88 Dominus but now I have expanded my palate and will try anything. The question should have been: “At your last supper, what wine would you have?” and I’m guessing alot more “Napas” will hit the screen, i.e. Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Staglin Family, etc.

Great show Gary, great show. Having a Chateau Ksara from Lebanon right now for 15 bones that is amazing. My kind of wine.

    Cheers!

P.S. Hate the Cowboys, they suck!!!!

Great show with an interesting guest. But Gary – you gotta let the guests complete their statements. Polite interruptions, are still interruptions!

QOTD: I did indeed start in Napa. A Napa cab, 1999 GooseCross Howell Mountain, was my epiphany wine. Up until just a few years ago I commonly walked into the local wine store and asked to see the “Napa” wines. Not too much anymore since I’ve started to “expand my palate”, due in large part to Wine Library TV. Thanks GV!

Loved these past two episodes. I think I’ll buy his book.

I’ve had the Brun Blanc and am somewhere in the middle. I agree with Gary that the nose was better than the palate. I did, however, find the minerality present and that made up a bit for the light body.

I’ve never walked into a wine store and asked for a Napa wine.

QOTD: I did not start with Napa and I have yet to really ‘get into’ it. I think it’s a value thing. Sure, I’ve had amazing Napa wines, but I feel you can get more bang for your buck in other regions.

I grew up in California and had a buddy whose dad grew grapes in Sonoma. I always pulled for and drank Sonoma. Carneros was about as close to Napa as I liked to get. Bunch of overrated and overpriced blowhards, I thought. To this day I am not interested in Napa. If you’ve got it, I’ll drink it. But I like the underdog. I went for Sonoma until I got out of California and discovered the rest of the world.

Great episode, with some great insight into the behind the scenes scene….as it where.

QOTD:The wine that really did it for me was a Janus reserva from pesquera, and to this day I still think Ribera Del Duero is my favorite region.

IMO, one the best guests ever on WineLibraryTV. Finally, a guest who’s articulate, not arrogant, not a windbag and not trying to sell his own wine.

    Thanks

    Very interesting episode.
    QOTD:
I did start out with Napa Cab after a visit in 1981 I realized that if I looked there were certainly better wines from Napa then those I had been consuming. A few years later I took that same thought to looking for wines in Europe. I now have a cellar with 1200+ bottles, perhaps 30 are American, a few Dominus, the majority French & Italian.

  • Great Episode. You guys kind of get along in an interesting way. Bit like Sasha and Gary (but not as extreme.) More of both?
