For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

  • Frankly, I try to avoid Napa wines when shopping, but only because I want something different.

QotD: Love Napa wines but Napa Cabs are becoming a little boring.

QOTD: I was never stuck on Napa. I’ve enjoyed being a tourist in Napa, but I’ve never been stuck on Napa. I know plenty of people stuck on Napa Cab and Chardonnay. I probably drink everything but. Not on purpose though. Maybe it’s my budget. I love Spanish wine. I’m into Rhone wine. A little South America. Certainly plenty of Italy. Then finally US wine. I like Central Coast CA and Willamette Valley OR. In PA we still have plenty of customers stuck on Napa. PAHLMEYER PROPRIETARY RED is in demand and other ‘value’ cabs sell well, Heitz Cellars, Chalk Hill, VINE CLIFF ROCK BLOCK, ROCKLEDGE VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON THE ROCKS, Atlas Peak.

This is my first post, so I am no longer a “LURKER.”

I really liked the guest today. RobRx nailed it with the Siskel and Ebert comment. That was exactly what I was going to say. I liked the contrast in personality and opinion. The knowledge and banter back and forth was awesome… especially when you went on the boxing tangent. I can’t wait for the day that you start talking about UFC. Loved it!

    Gary: Bring back Michael Steinberger!

Obviously the shows with him are going to last a little longer with the back and forth conversation. So, maybe bring him on once a month? You guys can talk anything and everything wine… wine news, current wine politics, major changes in the wine world… etc.

  • Didn’t start with Napa and really have never been able to afford much of it for myself. There are some values to be found.

Great episode Gary; great guest. Thanks for nerding it up.

Really fine show that had an easy to watch demeanor. It’s interesting to see such a contrast in opinion from two experienced tasters. When you are able, you should try the Leoville Barton 04 and check out W.A. and W.S. reviews, you’ll wonder if Parker tasted the same wine! I’m not crazy about most new world wines I try, either too much alc. or coconut vanilla flavors or not the same level of complexity, just more sweet than the wines you mentioned from France or Italy. Unfortunatly higher alc. levels and oak seem to be necessary to get noticed. Even so Napa is by far the appellation of choice for Bordeaux varietals. A spectacular cab that I’ve had a few times that would go head to head with anything in the world at the same price is the Joseph Phelps 05. I really don’t see the 06,07 Caymus as wines I would want drink at half price.
