For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

  • QOTD: I WAY did not start out with Napa. I started out with whatever they served at restaurants/bistros in the south of France, and fell in love. I’ve since moved northward in my preferences into Alsace, Burgundy, and Bordeaux.

Great guest, really enjoyed the discussions – very geeked out.

QOTD: No, I didn’t start in Napa. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and naturally started there. I have tried wines from Napa and from around the world, and have found some pretty nice ones (especially from S. America and New Zealand), but my everyday wine is still the local stuff. In fact, I’m just now finishing off a tasty Calif. Shenandoah Valley zin with a dark chocolate finish that lasts for minutes.

  • Great episode, had the good fortune to meet Mssr Steinberger at his father’s shop in Westport, CT over the weekend. Mike is a class act and very giving of his time and knowledge.

And to answer the question, I started out with 80s Stag’s Leap, have been all over the worldwide map (deep in Bordeaux, Western Australia, Piedmont, liking Spain, Argentina, Chile). When in CA, gravitate towards Dominus and some of the non-fruit-bomb Cali producers of old (Dunn, Diamond Creek), but am only just now scratching the surface of Burgundy and Rhone.

Gary – Go back a watch the tape. You interrupted the guest 5 times IN ONE SENTENCE. STFU once in a while.

this has to be one of the best guests ever. i love the amount of serious wine knowledge being exchanged, without ever feeling like the conversation was inaccessible or boring.

qotd: i have actually not had that much napa wine, mostly because i’m on a budget and i know that there really isn’t great value to be had there. that said the napa reputation is strong in my mind, and it is one of those places around the world – price aside – that i would love to taste a lot of wines from.

  • Great episode! I really enjoyed Michael as a guest. Lots of great information, and the dynamic with the two of you was great.

QOTD: I didn’t start with Napa. I actually started with the dreaded Yellowtail, but moved on to some Washington state wines, and have been expanding out all over the world from there.
