Gary, regarding Napa and its French winemakers who pull off some amazing vintages despite the status quo of the region for the last several years, have you tasted any of Jean-Noel Margeaux’s wines (actually his wife was the winemaker) from Mt. Veeder under the name of Chateau Potelle…What do you think of, lets say, his 2002 or 2003 VGS Syrah? I personally have had these alongside some killer bordeaux wines that Jean Noel himself recommended to my uncle as futures (Chateau Le Crock for instance) and i had nothing less than religious experiences with them all..TESTIFY GARY…Gimme your thoughts…If not you, Gary, then SOMEONE out there step up and tell what you thought of them…Thanks…;)

  • Hey Gary and Mike. This is THE BEST episode so far that I’ve seen (and I’ve seen them all in the archives!).

QOTD: I do NOT ask for Napa – just varietals…

I do buy wine because it is made in Napa.

QOTD: I started with Napa cabs and they still make up ~25% of my wine consumption. California wines (of many different varietals) are about 60% of what I drink. I just find myself coming back to areas I know well, not necessarily the same producers though.

  • I actually avoid most Napa wines because I think they are overprice.

Great guest, please have him back!

QOTD: was more of a Napa guy ten years ago. I just checked, and of the 100 bottles in my cellar, only 2 are from Napa.

Brilliant guest! One of the best ever. Was unimpressed with previous Napanook efforts…I’ll have to give the 2006 a shot. Thanks guys! QOTD – Not Napa. My first kiss (and the beginning of my wine obsession) was a Gigondas of all things…I couldn’t believe all those complex earth and herbal flavors combined with gorgeous fruit could be for real! I’ve been obsessed with the southern Rhone ever since…
