For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

Brilliant guest! One of the best ever. Was unimpressed with previous Napanook efforts…I’ll have to give the 2006 a shot. Thanks guys! QOTD – Not Napa. My first kiss (and the beginning of my wine obsession) was a Gigondas of all things…I couldn’t believe all those complex earth and herbal flavors combined with gorgeous fruit could be for real! I’ve been obsessed with the southern Rhone ever since…

  • This was a good show until you got off into boxing. I come to hear you talk about wine.

  • A dumb Rhine king

It almost felt a battle going on which ended in a good handshake.

Great guest. I recognize his name, probably from GV, but I have never read his columns. I would be very interested in that book. Hmmm? … Christmas .. hint hint .. Mrs Rhine Queen …

GVQOTD: I’ve only sought out a region because I had an interest in experiencing something from there. Not because of the over hyped press behind it. Every time I go to the liquor store, I search for something new, somewhere new (but still in my price point :)).

QOTD: I started in Australia, South America, and Washington; based mostly on price. I have had very few California wines. I may have had a Napa wine once or twice.

Hey Gary, another awesome show with a great guest. I don’t even mind that you have ventured back into the longer shows with alot more banter ( or is it bantor? ) QOTD: I love taking my palate around the world but I always come back to Napa and Sonoma.

  • Adrian a.k.a (Adawg!!)

Yes, When I go to a wine shop I always look into the napa cabs. Maybe because I live not to far from Napa, but also because I love the wine it produces. And Im talking about under 100 bones wine. All the insignia opus one stuff is over rated for me. Give me a Caymus ay 59 bones or a Robert mondavi cab at 20-21 bones. Jocelyn Lonen at under 40 bones. I have expanded the palate lateley to spain and chile, but I’ll be Darned if I dont give Napa Cabs Alotta LOve!!

QOTD: Started in Paso Robles, then Sonoma. Not rollin high enough to “stay” with Napa, but nearly always enjoy it when I can get it!

Smart guest- I’ll have to re-watch these episodes soon just to pick up all the knowledge that you both gave.
    QOTD1: Sometimes but usually only if it’s a French/Italian region, rarely Cali/US.
QOTD2: I’ve only had a few Napa wines, price tends to keep me out of that county for now, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve had and will be trying more soon (didn’t start there, haven’t drifted away)

  • Divya Mistry

Hack no about Napa. Tried 2-3 wines, and they tasted like same old stuff I bought at liquor stores (but then again, I roll like P-Diddy.. so may be all wines taste like that.. hmm)

QOTD: Don’t remember my first wine. But from what I have tasted of Napa, I think I would’ve moved on from it quickly.

I don’t look for Napa, but then again I’ve never really gotten that excited about Bordeaux varietals in general, so I’m not usually looking for cabernet either.

QOTD: I got into wine while living in Italy and drinking Italian wines and I never really got into Napa for any number of reasons.

Great guest and alot of info to digest. Your interaction with Michael was great but still interjecting along the way(good points though).

QOTD; I started with wines from california but drifted over to Washington and have stayed there. Still having problem finding good wines from Europe or South America.

  • I liked the boxing talk at the end. Went and found some of those bouts on YouTube and shared them with friends. Thanks.

I gotta agree, polite interruptions are no excuse for the profound amount of interruptions in this episode.

Gary ? Go back a watch the tape. You interrupted the guest 5 times IN ONE SENTENCE. STFU once in a while.

  • Phil M’Glassup

Very good show and I’m a fan of your guest’s column in Slate.
Hey sometimes you just gotta have a Napa cab. So yeah, once in a while, I’ll seek one out.
But as plenty of previous commenters have noted, there’s more interesting and affordable Cali Cab to be had in Sonoma, Santa Cruz, Paso Robles, etc.
Napa better wake up and smell the borscht (a cab franc like bouquet).
There are better deals on better wines with a more varied palate in many other countries.
    Cabsters, lower that fare!

QOTD: No. Don’t look for Napa, didn’t start with Napa, and don’t feel too much pity for Napa’s plight now.

Sorry but not feeling this episode. Too much babing, not enough drinking. And the sports talk puts me to sleep.

QOTD: Been bored with Napa Cab since I can remember. Maybe cuz growing up my Dad used to order it at restaurants all the time. I find it overrated and a rip off.

    Nice, informing episode. Great guest.

QOTD. I didn’t start in Napa – in Europe we all start with France – but I still love it.

Nope, never ask just for any area those few times I ask. QOTD — if it comes down to choosing between two reds I don’t know at equal price points, shelf talkers/points, etc., I’d choose Bordeaux over others, but Napa over anyone else

  • Mega-awesome guest…loved hearing about the take on AOC/AOD and the tremendous amount of knowledge/experience from him. I admit, I don’t normally have Champagne with a meal, so I will make a meaningful attempt.

QOTD: Napa was actually my second tasting area, since my mom and her family are Chilean; those wines tended to dominate my younger years. I have not had much Napa lately, though. I have been trying a lot of New World with some of my tried-and-true Old World faves.

I did start with Napa and I still drink Napa wines, although not as much mainly because of the price points.

What a great guest. I loved how the two of you ended up simply talking like friends about wine. You can not plan something like that. In fact, he was so good that I am picking up his book.

QOTD: I used to drink more Napa wines than I do now. The prices have gone crazy and I don’t believe the quality has improved at the same rate as the price increases. There is too much good wine out there to overpay for a solid but not spectacular effort.

This was really a great episode. Two people who are clearly passionate about a topic I am passionate about is always incedibly entertaining…to me. I hope you have Micheal back, G. The dude knows his stuff and explains in a way that is both understandable and not smug. Plus, he seems to have a great set of sense of smell and palate, which always goes over well here.

QOTD: While I do not specifically search out Napa, I find alot of wine from there good to excellent and sometimes even worthy of the coin, ie: that Napanook you guys just popped. Personally, I’m happy with what I have in the $25-$40 range. There’s just too much else out there to be concerned with the Cults and their image and costs that go along with them.

    Thanks Guys. Really great show!
