For all his “trust your own ‘pal’ ” talk, GV cant stand it when someone else’s palate is different from his own.

gary pulling through with the awesome guests. the politics and info about the wine world are so interesting and great. appreciate all the effort you’re doing gary.

Great chemistry, liked the show. Nope to the QOTD , got my start with a bottle of Lambrusco after a devastating score on a math test. (where I went to school 16 is the drinking age) No to the Napa question, always look for varietals first, region/producer next and price last.

  • Gary,
Great guest and good discussion between both of you. The tasting part was quite intriguing to me since I have written an article about the difference between a wine critic, and a wine steward on the retail level. It was obvious to me, and always has been that you approach wines from a standpoint of as you say…”Being in the trenches.” The guy from the trenches has an acute sense of what makes a wine good or bad. You felt the chardonnay was too light for you, whereas Michael thought it was a good wine for the money. Who will I side with? The guy from the trenches who might tell someone that this is a good chard for the money only to have the customer come back to the store and tell them that they got a sauvignon blanc for nine bucks that was actually better. That is why you Gary would not recommend this wine as a good value. Michael has probably never had to face that one on one contact with a disgruntled customer who did not like the suggestion. That my friends makes all the difference in the world. I love the fact that he disagreed with you, giving us the two sides of the coin. You have a great show going here and I hope you stay on much longer then Oprah.
QOTD… There are some good values from Napa, but I always look for good wine, I do not care where it is from. Montoya has a Napa Cab that goes for fifteen bucks, so there are good deals. But Napa means nothing if it is not a good qpr. The Walla Walla appellation in Washington State has the same problem as Napa. The reputation of the wineries and the high scores from Parker and the Wine Spectator have made the prices shoot out the roof. It’s crazy. Leonetti Cab now retails at $104.00. Is it worth that much? In my opinion absolutely not! I was uncomfortable buying it at eighty bucks just a couple of years ago. Let’s hope that someday soon these guys get off their high horse and bring prices down to reality.

    Gary,

Great show! Really enjoyed hearing about the economics of France and, more so, Burgundy. Very useful information, when talking about the global wine market.

Michael, I was hooked on wine w/ my first trip to Napa, but RARELY drink Napa anymore. Napa has pigeon-holed their style w/ tons of alcohol, oak, concentration, and BIG $$ wines. I’m currently drinking wines from northern Italy….loving Nebbiolo and Corvina.

  • QOTD1: No I don’t walk in and ask specifically for a “Napa Wine”

QOTD2: I still like NAPA, and I’m not only drinking it. Although I’m thinking on switching to AutoZone or Pep Boys

  • Curt

Great show, enjoyed the brief discussion about France.
QOTD: Silver Oak was my first love and really got me interested in wine, but I find it hard to swallow some of the prices being asked for napa wines. I make it a point to buy some Napa/Sonoma/Paso Robles… wines when ever I make a purchase because I want to support American farmers and winemakers but it is difficult when I can get some Spanish or Portuguese reds that give me goosebumps at a fraction of the cost.

    Great guest and episode(s)!

QOTD: I’m pretty new to wine. I started shopping at a local Vino 100 with the (mistaken) belief that “old world” wines would be the best. I quickly learned that it doesn’t matter where a wine comes from, what its price is, or what other people say. I learned to buy and drink what I like, try new wines, and trust my palate. Thanks Gary! I’m glad someone directed me to your website very early on.

  • QOTD, I typically shop by varietal, but since I’m always trying to give love to WA, I do ask for Washington wines when I’m not in WA.

QOTD, never was overly keyed up about Napa to care.

Guest seemed to lighten up as the episode went. Would loved to have heard more from him w/o being interrupted…just sayin’

My favorite episode for a long time. Great guest; love the boxing angle.
QOTD: yes, started with Napa cabs and since starting to watch WLTV am now drinking anything else. The show has really expanded my horizons and sent me searching for varietals I’d never even heard about previously.

QOTD: Started with French, moved to Napa wines kind of late actually. I kind of prefer Paso in some ways, so I’m not what you’d call a Napa guy.

Wow what an interesting guest….Gary I know you joke about ending WLTV and it’ll probably happen one day, if you needed a replacement guy, I think this dude has the chops. The actual tasting was really interesting, because your differing opinions taught more than any one person could do. I’ve noticed that while you and I like some of the same things, we get there in different ways…really interesting.

QOTD: I got my wine start here locally, in New Mexico, because I became friends with folks in the wine biz. Though I’m the Francophile of the group, I still have a huge special place in my heart for New Mexico wine.

Loved this two parter. Great work!

    QOTD : I wouldn’t say I started with Napa, so I can’t really say.

Gary’s Q : I have NEVER gone in and asked for a Napa…seeing how in California everyone store is littered with Cali wine from end to end.
