I usually like a Viognier and Marrsanne blend…

Big fan of the Viognier – though the Rhone stuff appeals to me most.
Recently the favourite has been the René Rostaing ‘Les Lezardes’ – gorgeous peach-melba and some minerality, IMHO a steal at £17… $27 or so in your money!

QOTD: Have had a few Viogniers here in Australia. I prefer the grape blended with Shiraz if I’m going to be honest…

    Nothing from Virginia?

You’re missing out. Love the show, you’re missing out. Veritas, Michael Shaps, Barren Ridge- all have rockin’ examples of the varietal, from both ’08 as well as ’07 (a better year for Virginia reds.)

I’d love to see a blind between something like Guigal’s Condrieu (a $45 bottle) and something as simple as the Barren Ridge ’08 Viogier ($22).

The results may surprise ;). Either way, the best pairing my wife and I have found for the grape would be crusty bread and artichoke dip. Great combo, go figure.

  • QOTD: I really enjoyed the Hermit Crab from d’Arenberg. Had that not too long ago after some influencing from WLTV. Beyond that, Washington Viognier is coming on pretty strong. The Metier Blanc from DeLille/Doyenne and the Viognier from Stevens Winery were great. Very different, but really really good wines.

If I had to drink white wine I might pick a Viogner over a chard but it would have to be a hot day with some shellfish or somesuch.

QOTD: Love Viognier…especially after learning its pronunciation a few years ago. I think a lot of people don’t order it due to being intimidated by its pronunciation. In any event, I agree w/ @Grill Factor…I really enjoy it on its own, but I love Syrahs that coferment it in small amounts 5%-8%. Arrowood Saralees Vineyard Syrah is my fav to do that.

Had many good Viogniers coming out of Wahington State. McCrea and Whitman make great ones as well as Dusted Valley. Also had many good blends with Viognier, in particular Thurston Wolfe PGV (pint gris-viognier)and J. Bookwalter Couplet (chardonnay-viognier).

Biggest problem with the wine is its inconstancy. Some are musty and thick, while others are more crisp and floral. In the restaunt environment, unless you have a superiorly educated staff, that inconsistancy scares away potential customers.

  • excited for the series gary – really glad some of these are going to be inexpensive wines. the last episode had me worried. i’m secretly hoping you score a cheaper wine better than its more expensive counterpart at some point in the blind tastings.

quotd: big fan of viognier for a long time. love when it delivers on aromatics that are a little less typical, love the mineral, floral, oceaniness etc.
my biggest beef with viognier is it’s been a bit of a crapshoot for me recently. my past few – rhone and elsewhere, have been totally boring, unrecognizable as viognier. if you’re going to use a less conventional grape, let it shine!

K Vintners makes a great Viognier from the Columbia Valley that is priced at $20, also on the pricier side Pride makes a nice Viognier at $42 but it is just a little too pricey for Viognier in my opinion.
