K Vintners makes a great Viognier from the Columbia Valley that is priced at $20, also on the pricier side Pride makes a nice Viognier at $42 but it is just a little too pricey for Viognier in my opinion.

For a long time I’ve enjoyed the Becker Vineyard viognier from the hills outside of Fredericksbury, Texas. It’s floral with good weight and length. I’ve also enjoyed Virginia viogniers from vineyards around Charlottesville I’ve liked. Can’t recall winery names.

  • QOTD: My only viognier experience is with those from Italy.
Caruso and Minini from Sicily makes a beautiful one.

Not a big fan of Viognier. Tried lots of different producers and regions but something in the flavor always puts me off. Even when you get to Shiraz/Viognier, I can taste the element of Viognier that I don’t like. It’s a shame because I always try to go outside the box for whites. Had a bottle of Vodopivec Vitovska last night that I loved.

  • But…but… I just saw you in London, how can you be here and there at the same time!

I’m perplexed but as it’s Viogner, I’ll let this mystery go.

Love viognier – drank a bottle of Le Paradou at the dinner table twice in the last month.

  • Ummm…at 6:04, is that an audio glitch or did someone cut the cheese?

QotD: Tasted a sparkling Viognier last weekend. It was very good. Not sure where it was from though.

0 for 2 on the blind tastes!! maybe you should have mixed the two and see what would have emerged!!

The high-def episodes are back! Excellent!

QOTD: Viognier is pretty popular with the wineries here in the Sierra Nevada foothills, both by itself and in blends with roussanne or marsanne (or both). Most of the viogniers in this area (in my experience, at least) tend to have a very floral nose, with strong honey, peach, and apricot flavors. It might be my second favorite white (after sauvignon blanc).

Love Viognier. Two favorites are only available at the vineyard, Les Chenes (Livermore, CA) and Silver Decoy (New Jersey). Generally lighter than Chard, more interesting than Sav Blanc, and not as fruity as Riesling. One reason I need to go to the Rhone someday.

For a time, Viognier was my favorite white grape, until Rhone versions grew too pricey. Agree with the Miner Family Viognier, it is very good.
Where the grape shines, though, is grown vine by vine with Syrah in Cote Rotie, co-fermented, and really adds something to those wines.

Well I’ve only had Viognier twice, but both have been positive and both were from Chile (Cono Sur Vision and Bisquertt). I definitely intend to try more…and other varieties as well!

QOTD..I bought a few bottles of àMaurice Viognier directly from the winery in Walla Walla and loved it. One of the ways I shop for wine is to look at wine lists at great restaurants, and then seek them out for myself. I think found àMaurice on the list at The French Laundry in Napa. No, I’ve not eaten there, but they post their wine list online.

  • Better than it used to be – all the viogniers I used to run in were thick new world wines that smelled like perfume and fruit cocktail and had way too much alcohol and too little acid.

I’ve had some Rhone examples that have brought me around a little, but I’d still rather have a dry Chenin or maybe a Vermentino, if we’re going to stay in the same general area.

Viogniers that I’ve been partial towards are McManis and Roots.

I agree about the packaging on the Revolution.
QOTD: I think I may have had it once, but some time ago. I’ll have to rediscover it sometime when I’m in a white wine mood.

I like them for the most part, never had one from Aust. doesn’t seem like my style anyway.

  • I LOVE a Viognier, so was giddy to see your blind tasting. Love the “Casper the Ghost” comment! Your assessments really make sense, in a wacky, real way that I love. Nice video! Inspiring me to start doing wine pairings on my own video cooking blog!

QOTD: The Pine Ridge blend is pretty solid and in a lot of restaurants here in Southern CA. I’ve had the Miner viognier as well. I’d like to try viognier and vouvray side by side. They seem pretty similar to me.

QOTD: Funny you should mention it… I have a Trader Joe’s Honey Moon Viognier in the fridge right now that I never would have bought except for watching your show. Just think, it would have been Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab for the rest of my life except for you. GV inspires again.
