QOTD: Gary, I’ve had three or four Viogniers, and I’m not a big fan. They were way too oaky and over the top buttery or something. Or, maybe it was the intense floral aspect. I’ll try a $40+ bottle one day and see if I feel the same way. Thanks for all you do.

    More hand puppets!

QOTD: I’ve had one Viognier that I can recall, from Washington. Columbia Crest, perhaps? It was long enough ago that I’ve forgotten details, but it seemed to be a decent wine.

Thanks for all your shows! QOTD: Just started drinking Viognier, very nice. Looking forward to seeing you December 16th in Harahan, LA for your book tour! I learned a lot about wine thanks to you.

I don’t like the revolution package either.
QOTD: I used to HATE viongier, but I have a friend who encouraged me to try it some ten yeas later. I think I have evolved (pretention alert) and now, I really enjoy it. Take the training wheels of I guess.

Love the blind tasting shows Gary.

Had some French Viogniers, one funny enough was a vin de pays d’oc which had a hugely aromatic nose but the body just didn’t live up to it.

The other French was Guigal Condrieu, which was pretty amazing (better be for $50)

I live in Virginia where Viognier is king of white varietals. Some very good wines.

Gary- Have you had much Virginia wine? I’d love to see a WLTV episode of Virginia wines. Viognier, Cab Franc are huge here and pretty darn good! There is also Norton which is apparently the true American native grape. It makes for a red wine that drinks like a white.

  • Great episode. I love the brown bag blind bruhaha! Could tell you weren’t feelin’ it on either wine. 90 pts for the second one – yikes, a little high.

QOTD – We like Viognier – good with spicey food, good sipping wine, some have good acidity. Did a review on my site of an Alexandria Nicole out of Woodinville, WA.

    Thanks

QOTD: I’ve had some great viognier from France, it’s one of a handful of varietals that I really need to drink more of.

ps – love the blind tastings, please do continue even after this sequence!!

I haven’t had a viognier before. From the way this show went, I can’t say I’m too excited about trying it either unlike the torrontes show you did some time ago where you were really excited about the wines. I hope your crew chose some more intriguing wines for the upcoming shows that will be posted soon…

Great show…love to see some Viognier love…What can I say…I’ve always been a big fan of Condrieu. I like the weight and complexity in the wines from Guigal and the last bottle of La Doriane I experienced had the most interesting kettle corn nose…In America I’ve only found one producer that does it right…K Vintners in Walla Walla. For $20 it’s nothing short of amazing…and just a stellar deal. One of these days I’m hoping I’ll get to try a Cayuse Viognier too…

Have had only limited experience with the viognier. A few bottles of Bears Lair
(Calif.), and a couple of others that I don’t remember.
It was, well, ok. Nothing more.
Agree on the Ausie bottle. Looked to me like a large bottle of hair tonic, and I’m not so sure that I could get that image out of my mind, if I were to drink some.

I love Viognier! Too bad neither of these wines showed what this grape is really capable of. I would love to see a Condrieu episode, especially with the great 2007 vintage!

QOTD: Most of the Viogniers that I’ve had came from Oregon and California. Almost all have been overly floral and sported a heavy, viscous mouthfeel that I’ve not enjoyed. Time to try one from France….

  • Lovvvvvve the double blinds especially with the generally speaking, off-the-wall whites but unfortunately these were not stellar but fine nonetheless. I would have ventured towards the 2nd bottle before you removed the bag since that has to be the most ugly-ass bottle I have ever seen I will buy wine #1. Sorry, but I’m a visual kind of guy.

QOTD: Most of my experience with Viognier have been quite positive. Whether your reviews or recommendations from a nearby wine shop, I love the stuff, especially with fish and most importantly one of my fav dishes, paella!

    Cheers!

Go Colts!!!! Denver is our only hurdle remaining.

P.S. Gary: We should meet when Indy plays the Jets and do an episode?

  • QOTD- I love it! I grow it! I ferment it with Syrah in small amounts. It is just an awesome grape. Hope to make a varietal Viognier in the next couple of years.
It brings huge aromatics to Syrah when cofermented in the 5-8% range, ala Cote Rotie.

I agree with Mr. Cabot, you simply can’t be serious about Northern Rhone blends without being serious about Viognier. We’ve had small amounts of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne in Washington State for years to blend with Syrah, and the serious Rhone Ranger types in this state each do a number of blends, some as many as six. I’m just glad that they are all doing some pure varietals also, especially Viognier.
I have a freind in my home town who makes about 150 cases of Viognier each year that is some of the best examples of Viognier grown in this state, Stina’s Cellars. Great aromatics and good acid, not “razor blade” acid but well balanced moderate acid.

QOTD: The only real viognier I’ve had, outside of blends that feature the grape in small amounts, was the Jordan River Viognier. That’s right, it was produced in Jordan, the country next to Israel and Syria. I was living there for a while, and they put huge taxes imported wine so I was drinking what I could from the local stuff. Frankly, I believe the Jordan River Viognier to be the only remotely drinkable wine to have ever been produced in that country. So yeah, I’m not unfavorably disposed towards viognier, but I would like to try more for sure. Along with chenin blanc, it’s on my list of white grape varietals to explore.
