‘I’m quite bored by it and I’m almost taking a nap.’

After a couple of bore draws this episode turns up a decisive and surprising winner of the head to head. Makes for a much better show.

Excellent show, thank you! Love the SA Rugby jersey! Blind tastings are always fun.

    QOTD: Better internet connection!

Bonus QOTD: More South African wines! I love your show, but cannot buy any of the wines you discuss. Would LOVE a South African only double blind. (…and not just Pinotage 🙂

QOTD: I want an XBOX 360 with COD: MW2. That game is awesome!

Interesting how the blind test ended. You’d be surprised in how much the label can affect your judgment. However, I’ll stick to my Friendship School Red wine at 7.99 a bottle. 😀

Really enjoying the blind head to head tastings so far. It shows that even the man changing the wine world can get a little hung up in branding and press etc etc, and I feel it makes the show much more interesting, and compelling for me to try them.

Just a note, I’m a lurker, a newbie(watching the show longer than trying wines lol), and I finally(last week) tasted my 1’st wine that I could really discern flavors, it was wonderful =) Was a german riesling, and I believe it was only like 13 bucks. Almost everything to that point tasted like “Umm, man, they all taste like that, kinda eww”

QOTD – I want to find my next riesling =D

  • Hey Gary, screw the establishment! Isn’t it really just all about how it tastes and can I afford it? Everyone’s palate is different. Spectator, Advocate, etc should do ALL of their tastings blind – they should randomly select from the thousands of wines they get a day too.

I love the blind head to head, your review is not the be all end all, but people who visit this space and trust you before making buying decisions. As a result, I wouldn’t consider dropping $40 of my precious bones for the wine on the left. I would absolutely order the Evening Land if I saw it on a wine list.

    Great job!

QOTD: Just a quiet night at home alone with my wife, a warm fire, and a killer bottle of vino.

Loving the double blinds!! It is much like the way I taste wines because I am just starting to learn more (thanx) so I usually do not have a preconcieved idea about the producer.

I need to keep my eye out for Evening Land Pino!Maybe I can get my boss to buy some for the restaurant

QOTD: I would love to go skiing for the day or maybe even learn how to snowboard!! Haven’t been on the slopes since my first was born (holy crap that is over 6 years ago!!)

Do you REALLY think this shaved head asswipe doesn?t know what the wines are? He sells both. And makes more profit on one than the other.

I am calling it. All these blind episodes were taped in the same day and gary changes shirt and chalkboard after the first two episodes.

    On a different note:

I want to see an episode about bottle variation. Maybe grab 4 or 5 bottles of the same wine and see if there are any major differences….????

    Gary,

I just love these blind tests. They take the snootiness, hype and BS out of wine tasting to reveal only the bare-bone facts: what do these wines really taste like? How much do you like them? Which one tastes better?

By the way just a minor correction: this was a (single) blind test, not a double-blind test.

For it to be a double-blind test bothe the experimenter (you or someone with Wine library) and especially the subject being tested(you also) must not have any prior knowledge/information whatsoever about the wines. The subject cannot have any visual clue of the wine either, including the top of bottle or possibly not even the wine appearance both of which can be clues to their identity. The idea is to prevent any information from influencing your decision. Double-blind tests with food are a pain in the neck to conduct and may not be relevant or useful for what you are trying to do.

For simpply showing which wine you prefer, the single blind test you conducted are perfectly fine. I love them and would love to see more of them in the future.

    Cheers.

QOTD: I really don’t need much of anything; how about world peace? I know so many people wish for it every year, what if we actually did something about it for a change? Or trying to cure hunger, or diseases, anything that would truly make the world a better place.

Love the Springbok jersey. Good idea for a three way competition New Zealand/South Africa/Australia modeled after Tri-Nations Rugby…

  • I ordered the Evening Land Pinot Noir for 21.99/bottle from Woodland Hills Wine Co. Another perk is we have Goldes State Delivery for interstate next day deliveries in CA. Cost for next day is 10.62 + 0.66 insturance. I only ordered 4 bottles. If I likey, I will get case. Plan on serving it with Xmas prime rib. I have a wino friend that I hope will appreciate it.

Plus, it’s not a “double blind” tasting.

    It’s a “blind” tasting.

“Double blind” is a pharmaceutical term that signifies that neither the physician nor the patient knows what they are being given.

Presumable, the people who put the wine in the bags know what it was.

God, this shaved-head guy is an idiot.
