‘I’m quite bored by it and I’m almost taking a nap.’

After a couple of bore draws this episode turns up a decisive and surprising winner of the head to head. Makes for a much better show.

QOTD: I want you to do my WLTV episode idea for the holidays.

Choose 4-6 wines and taste them blind once a week for an episode of WLTV. Then repeat this blind tasting lineup for 4-6 weeks and track the changes in your perceptions/scores of the wines. I think it would really show the idea that tasting wine is often more subjective than objective. You could also add another experimental element to the idea by increasing decanting time. So for the first blind tasting – decant 0 hours, 2nd – decant 1 hour, 3rd – decant 2 hours etc… etc… I think it would be a fun/enlightening experiment and a nice little gimmick to keep us watching. Lets nerd up WLTV.

but no seriously this holiday I want to Graduate and find a job, I’ve been a CKC for too long.

    g,

got to agree with some of your vayniaks regarding the vintage year 2007. it was NOT a good year for the pacific NW. but, having said that, i LOVE the PN from that region. i think they are WAY better than the cali pinots overall. some of my faves are from 04, 05 and i am now drinking 06s. too mnay to mention, but you dont have to spend more than 50 bones for some good juice. and i never heard about Evening Land before today, nor would i consider drinking an 08, it’s just to early ! but hey ! who knew !

QOTD: a day with families and friends, good food, good wine and good times. and where can i get some of those big ass glasses ?

Great show! Love seeing the underdog win.

Besides time with the fam, I always love new gadgets. I think my wife is getting me a Nintendo Wii and a few months worth of your wine of the month club. She’s not very good at keeping secrets! We’ll see how a few glasses of wine affects my score on Tiger Woods Golf… I’ll probably end up passed out in my front yard with no shoes on.

This is why I too love blind tastings. Even though in real life I never drink wine blind, so it isn’t perfect in gauging wine enjoyment, it still does reveal at times when an expensive wine has be grossly overrated on name or reputation alone.

QOTD: A job. I’m more bummed about this answer than any other QOTD answer I’ve ever given here. But it is what it is.

Finally, I am so looking forward to seeing you a week from tomorrow in Denver.

    Cheers!

  • You may not be familiar with the label, but Wine Spectator rates three Evening Land Pinot Noir 2007s at more than 90 points. The Eola-Amity Hills Seven Springs Vineyard 2007 was one of the WS Top 100 wines this year. The Evening Land Pinot Noirs WS rated all were more expensive than one you tasted, but clearly this Oregon maker is crushing it.

I enjoy your blind tastings. Less expensive wines winning is no surprise. “The Wine Trials” by Robin Goldstein explores this, listing 100 wines under $15 that crushed wines costing very much more in broad blind tastings. Viva le value!

  • Doesn’t Robert Parker have an ownership interest in Beaux Freres? Or was it his brother-in-law or something??? I dunno… even though I am from the Pacific Northwest, I have never been thrilled with the pinots from up here. Too much cherry Lifesaver, not enough poop… but, that is just my palate! I did have one awhile back from a little winery up near Lake Chelan that rocked. Wish I could remember the name! Oh well…

QOTD – as long as everyone is happy and healthy, my prime rib comes out perfect, and my 2003 Woodward Canyon Walla Walla cabernet sauvignon isn’t corked, I am a happy and blessed guy. I have everything I need. And if I overcook the prime rib and my wine is corked, nob biggie… I grab another bottle (2004 Bella Lily Hill Estate zinfandel) and cover the prime rib with bbq sauce! Either way, I win. Cheers!

QOTD – I want to be with my girlfriend for Christmas, more than anything else. That was going to happen, but no longer so.
We had it all planned out: she was going to come visit me from Korea, she bought the plane ticket and we even booked the hotel we were going to stay in NYC. But her prospective employer called and gave a new interview date & job start date, and the flights for the holiday seasons are booked solid so she can’t change the date on the ticket. So we’re going to have to settle for a 70% refund on the flight and lose the deposit on the hotel reservation.
I’m probably going treat myself and order wine from WL with the money that I was going to spend with her, but gosh darn I wish she was here with me. Yes, more than the wines.

Hey Gary, As always, I love the blind tastings. There’s not much the pinot heads can say about this ass whooping. They can’t even say the wines are too young when the winner by TKO was an 08. QOTD: for Christmas all I want is my usual: new shoes, good wine, and time with my family.

1, Nice Oregon (Pron. Orygun not Orygone) Duck colors, LOL!, 2, 08 vs.07 is not a good comparison, probably should try the 08 BF, 3, Many Oregon Pinots can be described as $16-18 bottles especially in a boring vintage, Pinot is so inconsistent that the vintage diff can be huge

QOTD: A Duck victory in the Rose Bowl!

    Thanks,
