line of the day – ‘seemed a little conservative, then got a little freaky deaky’

GV was convinced that one of these wine was young, and one definitely a little older. They were both from 2004…proving that our leader is human after all.

I’ve only had two Barolo. One was a Pio Cesare from the 2000 year, I think was rated 94ish WS… The year the Barolo was the “perfect” vintage so I couldn’t wait to try some.

I couldn’t have been more disappointed. After hearing so much about how deep these wines were this one (at least the bottle i had) was just wine and not particularly drinkable. The other one was good but not “perfect” by any stretch and they were expensive so… i haven’t bought one since.

I want to but for the money I can’t afford to risk it… you know?

  • Great show. Had a 1949 Serafino Barolo recently and it was sublime.

I looooove Barolo. 7 times out of ten if someone asks me “Burgundy or Barolo tonight?” I’m going Barolo. Last I had was a 2000 Beni di Batasiolo Reserva. Smelled like sour cherries, flowers and earl grey tea. Awesome town.

Barolos rank in the top 5 wines I have ever had. Barolo goes well with any grilled meat to me. Not many pastas hold up to it but meat oh yeah.

QOTD: Gosh, I think I’ve had a fair amount of Barolo’s. Maybe 50-75 in the past 4 years. I think my most recent experience was this past June when a group of us got together and someone brought an 82 Michele Chiarlo Barolo. Good stuff and there is a very good argument for aging wines after this experience. Mostly I have had Barolos in the $50 and under range…but after I finish grad school I’m hoping to get a few in the cellar at the top end. I’m currently kicking myself in the @$$ for not buying the Gran Busia on Cinderella. Any chance there will be an end of the year opportunity to clear out anything that didn’t sell out at the same prices????

Discovered Barolo’s 15yrs ago. I have 5 or 6 from 96/97 vintage in my cellar and can’t wait to taste them. Holding out 5 to 8 more years of aging. I have had an occasional inexpensive bottle just to stay in the loop and still enjoyed them with food.

    :lol … where’s KAHUNA?

  • I’m certain you’re right about Barolo coming to the fore, with Barolo futures etc. I’m thrilled you’ve done a Barolo video it’s been a long time since.

QOTD: I’m having Borgogno Barolo tomorrow night! As for the last previous was Roberto Voerzio Barolo Sarmassa 1998.

Barolo is hands down my favourite wine and yes, it’s becoming really geeky with a growing league of superstar producers but there is also so much value out of Piedmont reds and I think with Barolo taking that step up then Barbera and Dolcetto will cadge a lift behind it.

I really like the shows in this format, I’m less into the guests.

    Barolo is where it’s at.

  • “Brunello has too much Sangiovese” – I thought the problem was that it had suspiciously too little! 😀

QOTD — I stick with the less $ Nebbiolos ($15-30) instead of the Barolos

  • None, really – I’ve got one in the basement somewhere, but generally it’s a cost issue.

I like the blind head to heads. I don’t have much experience with Barolo, but I love nebbiolo and am looking to try more. I’ve got a couple in the cellar that I’ll pop in another couple of years.

Barolo is probably my favorite wine; so glad to see this head-to-head! I went on a honeymoon in Alba a few years ago and it was dreamy. We spent a week just meandering around tasting Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto D’Alba, and eating truffles. My favorite wine from that time was a 2001 Vietti Castiglione Barolo, one of the few things I’m cellaring.
